[JURIST] Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir Wednesday threatened to ignore any arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court. Bashir, speaking to legislators Wednesday in semi-autonomous southern Sudan, said he would not "deal with or respond to" the ICC, according to AFP. Bashir's speech rallied support against the ICC and predicted that ICC charges against him would harm the country's oil-based economy. AFP has more. In July, ICC Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo applied for a warrant to arrest Bashir on charges of Genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes for atrocities committed in the country's Darfur region. Moreno-Ocampo this month criticized Sudan's own investigation of war crimes in Darfur, calling it "part of the cover-up." Sudan's justice minister recently appointed several prosecutors to investigate and try war crimes suspects in internationally monitored courts. In another development in Sudan Wednesday, security forces reportedly seized copies of the English-language Sudan Tribune for the 17th time this month. The editor of the Tribune said Thursday that government censors this week warned the newspaper it would be closed by Sept. 1 if it fails to replace its editorial board, among other conditions. In a report on its website Thursday, the newspaper said the government had barred publication of an article quoting Sudan's foreign minister as criticizing security forces for the deaths of 30 people ...

Darfur Statistics and reflections on living in Darfur during the Genocide. 15,000 people die each month. That’s what the International Coalition for Justice has reported. And I am sitting cozy in my bubble. According to the UN, 1.85 million people are displaced within Darfur. My town is the “bubble town.” Nothing bad ever happens in it. There’s no school violence at my local public high school. The... ...

George Clooney attends the 65th Venice Film Festival "Not On Our Watch" Charity Gala held at the Hotel Cipriani on Tuesday (his buddy Brad Pitt will show up this week, as well). That sounds really impressive until you realize that George has his own villa in Italy and has been cruising around in his yacht for the better part of the last month. That is, when he's not crusading against Genocide in Darfur. And once again, he proves a movie star's life is one not all of us could lead! [Photo: Getty Images] ...

Most Republicans are familiar with Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback's passionate views against abortion and embryonic stem cell research. But when Brownback addresses delegates on the final night of the GOP's national convention next week, he plans to promote his "whole life" philosophy, which links his anti-abortion stand with a call to value life "at every stage." That means making it a priority to fight poverty and injustice around the world - whether it's working to stop Genocide in Darfur, curb human trafficking in Asia or halt the spread of AIDS in Africa. He wants to show that Republicans who accept the "whole life" ethic have more of a claim as the party for compassion and social justice than Democrats. "It's a philosophical position for the party that we're fighting to get the party to embrace," Brownback said in an interview. ...

When last we saw Don Cheadle, he was spearheading the fight to make Sudan's ongoing Darfur crisis page-one news around the world with his documentary, "Darfur Now!" As one of the first celebrities to take up Darfur, an African region in an Arab-dominated Islamic nation in which the government is accused of Genocide against its African citizens, Cheadle used the documentary to show the world what was happening, and what could be done about it. For his newest film, "Traitor," he plays a Sudanese-American who must choose between extremists who practice his faith and the adopted country, the United States, that trained him to build bombs and fight a terror war. "Traitor," which Cheadle also produced, is being praised for what The Hollywood Reporter's Kirk Honeycutt called his "cool and calm" presence at its center. We reached Cheadle in New York. Does "Traitor" reinforce the points you made with your Sudan documentary, that this is a part of the world that we have to pay attention to, or it will breed more misery and terrorism? ...

---Quote--- *Sudan's crimes, China, and losing the moral high ground* By David M. Crane Commentary by Friday, August 22, 2008 .... The cornerstone to a nation's moral standing is the rule of law. It is through the adherence to law that fundamental freedoms are protected and nurtured. Closely allied to this is a nation's care for its own citizens. A nation's responsibility to protect those living within its own borders is a solemn and sovereign duty. Nations that ignore that duty become pariahs within the family of nations; they too lose the moral high ground. Nowhere is this more so than in the Sudan. Though not alone in its ability to feed ravenously on its own citizenry, Sudan has taken this duty to protect and thrown it aside in a widespread and systematic policy to eliminate its own citizens in Darfur. Because of this policy the president of Sudan, Omar al-Bashir, has now been charged with a 10-count indictment for Genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Because of this, Sudan has no moral standing; this undercuts its ability to exist politically within the United Nations paradigm. China is another example of a nation that has no moral standing. It cynically provides political cover to Bashir as it continues to hold on to its oil interests in Sudan, looking the other way as thousands die. The Chinese hope that there will be harmony throughout the Olympic Games they are hosting. Imagine if they had the moral high grou ...
