After facing over forty shots per game in their first three games (all losses, one in overtime) the Tampa Bay Lightning today decided to address the lack of experienced defensive depth on the blueine corps, signing former New York Rangers defenseman Marek Malik to a one-year, $1.2 million pro-rated contract. Malik was an unrestricted free agent who'd been unable to land a contract during the summer with another NHL team after two rough seasons with the New York Rangers where he was pretty much booed out of town. As predicted by many observers - myself included - the Lightning's defense corps is currently too young and inexperienced to handle the workload after management traded away Dan Boyle and Filip Kuba during the off-season, leaving them without veteran depth and leadership. Malik actually posted up decent numbers during his years with the Rangers, including an impressive plus-minus of +32 in 2006-07 but too often he became the whipping boy of the Rangers fans for a preceived lack of effort in his game resulting in bad goals against the Blueshirts. It remains to be seen if Malik will help provide the stability the Lightning's defense desperately needs, but at this point it's clear they need all the help they can get. No Comments ...

The San Jose Sharks put defenseman Kyle McLaren on waivers Tuesday, possibly ending the oft-injured veteran's 4 1/2-year tenure with the club. McLaren, a 12-year NHL veteran, had three goals and eight assists while battling constant knee injuries last season, undergoing surgery in January. He appeared in two preseason games with the Sharks, who didn't even allow him to skate in intrasquad scrimmages while attempting to move him. "Kyle has been a tremendous professional through this," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. "We're trying to do what's right for him, so we'll see what the next few days brings." McLaren's role with the club already was diminished before training camp when San Jose acquired veteran defensemen Rob Blake, Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich. The Sharks also signed young defensemen Christian Ehrhoff, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Doug Murray to contract extensions in recent months. If McLaren isn't claimed by another team, he could be assigned to the Sharks' top affiliate in Worcester, where his $2.5 million salary wouldn't count against the cap. ...

Golf The North Andover golf team went 1-2 this past week, improving their overall record to 5-3. The Knights began the week falling 173-162 to Triton Sept. 25. Colin Foley led the Knights with a team-high score of 31 points. Following Foley was John Boyle with 29, Kris Hopkins 27, Pat Boyle 26 and Scott Whalen and Dan Daley 23. “This was a very close match,” said Knights head coach Peter Farley. “Triton is still undefeated and is a very good team. I thought we had a very good chance to beat them, but unfortunately we came up short.” The Knights bounced back in stride after their loss to Triton, defeating Hamilton-Wenham, 166-140. Nick Depace and Whalen each finished tied with a score of 32. Pat Boyle ended up with 31, Foley 26, Daley 24 and D.J. Chiassom 21. “The team played well,” said Farley. “One-hundred sixty-six points is what we have been averaging this year as a team, and I give a lot of credit to Scott Whalen, Nick Depace and Pat Boyle who finished with a score in the low thirties.” The Knights lost their final game of the week Sept. 30, losing to Manchester-Essex, 145-144. GREENSBORO — The Greensboro Transit Authority is experiencing growing pains that have sunk its on-time performance into the problem zone, a new study shows. San Diego-based transit consultant Dan Boyle found some GTA buses running more than six minutes off-schedule as much as 57 percent of the time.
