I got a question yesterday from reader, Scott, asking how the winnings from races are determined. If you pay attention to those, you'll notice that a better finish doesn't always mean more money. For example, at Talladega Ryan Newman, who finished last, made $112,653. Jeff Gordon was awarded $120,186 for his 38th place finish. Meanwhile Dale Earnhardt Jr. got $83,300 for his 28th place finish and Joe Nemechek got $81,875 for an 11th place finish. I got an explanation from NASCAR, which I'll post here, but it likely won't clear up many things. The short answer is, NASCAR's payout system is more complicated than who finishes where. The race purse is just one small part of the driver's winnings. Television awards, "special plans," and contingency plans are also part of the equation. The biggest pieces of the total purse come from the race purse and television awards. NASCAR, the track, some sponsors and television outlets contribute to those. Special plans are based on past performance and participation, which explains why Gordon, the winningest active driver in NASCAR, makes so much. The Winners Circle Program goes to 10 drivers with the highest win total from the previous season and the first two winners from the current season who weren't already in the Winners Circle Program. Ryan Newman, for example, wouldn't be one of the drivers with the 10 highest win totals from the previous season, but since he won the first race of the se ... Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s car basically blew up in practice a few minutes ago. His right rear tire blew and took off most the back of his car. Walking through the garage the tow trucks brought in a crumpled up No. 88 and a crumped up No. 38 shortly thereafter. Gilliland ran into Junior after his car turned. "I was behind him the lap before, it wasn't smokinng, no rub, no nothing," Gilliland said of driving behind Earnhardt. "It just blew up." Kasey Kahne and Tony Stewart also got involved and sustained some damage. The No. 20 won't be going to a backup car, but the No. 88 and No. 38 will have to do that. ... It slices, it dices and twists metal faster than any man or machine. Welcome to Talladega Superspeedway, the high-banked, high-speed track that has earned a nasty reputation. The racing is tight, the speeds are high and the crashes lead to some dramatic imagery for fans and breathless moments for drivers. Chase drivers who make it through Sunday's Amp Energy 500 at Talladega will position themselves well for a championship run. Those who get caught up in the inevitable "big one" will put themselves in a deep hole for the final six races. "It really created the big one before Daytona did, the big wrecks that you guys like to talk about," Dale Earnhardt Jr. said. "I mean, it's the place where all that started. It's sort of always been in the shadow of Daytona. But to me, I don't know, it's just impressive, the size of the track, the speed, how close we run together. I mean, we're running 190 miles an hour in the draft, tight door-to-door, bumper-to-bumper. There's literally no room for any error whatsoever. It's just really, really exciting. It's an amazing adrenaline rush for four straight hours. You got that feeling constantly throughout the whole race." Enjoy these Talladega crash video compilations I found on YouTube. We'll pick up on this Talladega thread a little bit later. Stay tuned. Here is video that includes Bobby Allison's scary crash in 1987 that led NASCAR to use restrictor plates at Daytona and Talladega. Awful, deadp ... Source: blogs.orlandosentinel.com --- 9 days ago

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s had a bad day. First he had a problem with his motor, and had to replace it. That means Earnhardt will start at the back of the field on Sunday. Then, his tire blew and messed up his car during practice. The car was so badly damaged Earnhardt would've had to go to a backup car even if David Gilliland hadn't slammed into him. The car they wrecked was Earnhardt's Bud Shootout car (he won that race), but the good news is his backup is his Daytona 500 car, which ran pretty well back in February. Earnhardt is surprisingly upbeat after this rough day. And he thinks his team will be more mentally tough on Sunday because of the adversity they went through today. "It would be worse somewhere else," Earnhardt said. "The way these cars drive, it doesn’t matter how good. I was talking to david about his car and I felt sorry for him getting swept up in that and he said his backup car wasn’t that good. But I told him his car wouldn’t matter in a place like this. He might have more fun with it. I have a really good car but even if we weren’t sure about how good our car was that we’re bringing to the race, I’d still feel pretty confident. It’s a fun racetrack. It’s got a lot of mystique and history for me." ... Source: blogs.orlandosentinel.com --- 1 day ago
Bad start for Dale Earnahrdt Jr., who just went into the garage to work on his car. He blew a right front tire and slammed hard into the wall. The hood of his car crunched. Earnhardt blew a tire in Charlotte back in May, too. Here's the exchange Earnhardt just had with an ESPN reporter. Q. What did you feel out there? DE: Pow! And then it went into the wall. About like every other tire that blows. Q. Did you know it was coming? DE: I'd've let off. Hell no! I'd have slowed down if I knew the tire was going to blow. ... Dale Earnhardt Jr. and David Ragan have to start at the back of the field tomorrow even though qualifying hasn't happened yet because teams can only use one engine this weekend and both of those cars changed engines. They'll still have to qualify for pit selection and because the qualifying rule says drivers must attempt to qualify in order to get the spot in the race reserved for them by the top 35 rule. Qualifying will begin in about 10 minutes with Martin Truex Jr. up first followed by Greg Biffle and Jeff Gordon. ... Source: video.nascarblog.org --- 8 hours ago
