Should you buy the show's fourth season? Only if you are a fan. Just getting into it? Rent it first. Back when Girlfriends aired on the UPN network in 2000, the show looked as if it wouldn’t get past its first season. Spike Lee already blasted the show and the television critics didn't completely warm up to it at first. What the critics discovered that Spike didn't was that the show was more than a show about sex and relationships. ... ...

Vietnam's highest grossing film kicks its way onto DVD. One of the things that I love about martial arts movies and especially the ones released by the wonderful company Dragon Dynasty is that it’s basically the only genre that makes its violence a selling point. Yet, it doesn’t glorify violence for the sake of violence as anyone can grab a gun and shoot their way out of a situation in some... ...

This classic has never looked better. Believe it or not, when I sat down to watch the Sleeping Beauty: Platinum Edition DVD, it was the first time I had ever laid eyes on the film. It was the only classic Disney animation film that I had somehow missed, and I am grateful that the situation has been rectified. Sleeping Beauty is a classic in every sense of the word -- the themes it... ...

We've got the rare double REVIEW today: I took a look at RealDVD (which is currently on the legal ropes ) while Jim took Drive-In for Mac for a spin. Both programs work in similar ways: they copy the entire disc to your hard drive so you can watch the movie without the disc. There is plenty of illicit software that does the same thing, but these programs could potentially (hopefully) bring legal DVD copying into the mainstream. Neither RealDVD nor Drive-In are perfect. Unless you plug your computer into your TV, you're limited to watching the recorded films on your desktop's or laptop's monitor. And with RealDVD, you have to use RealNetworks' proprietary media player. Both programs, therefore, have both benefits and limitations, and Jim and I both said we'd like to see these capabilities find their way into other programs, such as iTunes, Windows Media Player or whatever you use to play your media. ...

"Hey, Margolis," the Hudson Brothers are on DVD. Thomas Wolfe was right. You can’t go home again. With the advent of the Saturday morning shows of my youth making their way to DVD, I have discovered some are still enjoyable to my adult sensibilities while others leave me disappointed and scratching my head over the suspect tastes of El Bicho Past. Sad to say, The Hudson Brothers Razzle... ...

Iron Man Ultimate 2-Disc Edition DVD bristles with special features, not an extra copy of the movie you just bought. Iron Man finally lands on DVD. And boy, is he heavy -- with special features, that is. For those who don’t remember, the movie is about an arms dealer with a conscience who builds a super-powered suit of armor. Tony Stark is a role tailored for Robert Downey Jr. Even while turning into the hero, he doesn’t sacrifice his fast-talking,... ...

Solid thriller that had potential to be great. The 1982 political film, Missing, by Costa-Gavras (his first American production), is soon to be released on DVD by The Criterion Collection. It’s a good film, but not a great one. This is mostly because it lacks any real poetry, the way Ingmar Bergman’s anti-war film, Shame, has. Yes, it’s well plotted, well acted, well directed,... ...

The Happening lives up to the negative hype. It’s become rather fashionable of late to criticize M. Night Shyamalan, and despite the indiscriminate nature of much of the bashing, it’s not that difficult to see why. I, like many others, became an instant fan of Shyamalan with his breakout The Sixth Sense, and although I am in the distinct minority here, I loved Unbreakable as well.... ...

Sadly, not a film you can dance to. Sitting down to write this REVIEW, I feel like an elementary school teacher whose most sensitive and well-meaning pupil has just given me a drawing that I don’t quite understand. I admire the intent and can feel the amount of love that went into the picture but the difference is that unfortunately while one can proudly hang such a project on... ...

Mother of Tears (known as La Terza Madre in Italy) is a film by Italian horror master Dario Argento.  The film serves as the concluding part to his horror trilogy began back in 1977 with Suspira and continuing with Inferno in 1980.  27 years between sequels is a long time but the film plays on its own merits and there is no need to see the first two except to maybe develop a feel for Argento’s style... ...

Perhaps the most telling line in The Sum of All Fears is spoken by Morgan Freeman as CIA Director Bill Cabot. The POTUS says they run nuclear fire drills against the Russians because who else has over 2,000 to worry about, to which Cabot says, "It's the guy with one I'm worried about." It's been years since I originally saw this film, and I have to say it was not as bad as I remember it being the first time. The series took a bizarre turn on this one. Bonus feature commentary revealed that Harrison Ford was originally supposed to reprise the role of Jack Ryan for the third time, but ultimately decided against it before filming began. The role was recast with Ben Affleck , 30 years Ford's junior, and the script was rewritten to have Ryan as a new recruit to the CIA instead holding a high office like in the novel. The story was altered significantly from the novel, effectively rebooting a series that did not need rebooting. However, it all went down with the approval of author Tom Clancy , who served as the film's executive producer [...] ...

Kill Switch DVD REVIEW @ Ascully.com Quote "I remember a time when action movies and action heroes ruled the world. Arnold, Sly, Jean-Claude and Steven Seagal were bankable stars. The movies were at least watchable, mainly because we didn’t know any better, and it was fun to see the good guys pummel the bad guys into oblivion." Ewan McGregor and Hugh Jackman fail to ignite this "thriller." There is not much to keep the audience guessing in the generic psychological thriller Deception. The story is so by-the-numbers that the outcome can easily be figured out long before the movie ends. The only real mystery of this film is what inspired the promising cast to take part in such tripe.Ewan McGregor plays Jonathan, a timid accountant... ...
