Tensions continue to grow between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda along their boundary in the Lake Albert region. Since the discovery of oil resources in the area in recent years, skirmishes between military units have been on the increase in recent years both on the lake itself and along overland border sections north west of the shoreline. Tullow Oil is the main exploration company operating on the Ugandan side of Lake Albert. Its concession blocks include the mainly onshore Exploration Area 1, located on the northern shore of Lake Albert and the mainly offshore Areas 2 and 3A on the eastern side of the lake. Operating with its partner Heritage Oil, Tullow has been drilling in Lake Albert and is nearing commercial production. However, Tullow Oil is also a substantial shareholder alongside Heritage in concession blocks I and II on the DRC side of Lake Albert where exploration has yet to take place. Accusing Tullow of exploring resources on its side of the boundary in Lake Albert, on 1 May the DRC government withdrew Tullow’s rights in Blocks I and II citing that the license had not been issued by the appropriate official.The Congolese government also accused the Ugandan military of supporting Tullow in exploring areas it believes to be on its side of the boundary, particularly along the border area north west of the Lake Albert shoreline.
