This week I'm in Japan for the Tokyo Games Show, the biggest and most innovative interactive entertainment Festival of riches in the world. I'm accompanying 12 British games companies to the epicentre of the world's gaming scene with the UKTI's Game Mission, where they'll get a three-day programme of seminars and meetings with Japanese publishers, developers and dignitaries. While I'm here, I'm going to trawl the show floor, to meet a few gaming celebs and a couple of those dignitaries myself. I'll be reporting back on a daily basis in video updates on the Technology Guardian website, giving Gamesblog readers the tweets and whistles from the show floor and behind the scenes. Although there's an element of going with my eyes wide open to see what ephemera fall in front of me, I'm not heading overseas without a bit of forethought. I'll be seeking out the following choice offerings. The Nintendo DSi, launched last week, has a gaggle of new features: a camera, an SD slot, a larger screen and a souped-up DOWNLOAD service. I'll have a hands-on before moving on to Phantasy Star 0 on the DS and its sister on the PSP. The Sega game places another stake in the ground of innovation for the developers, bringing massively multiplayer experiences to the handheld scene for the first time, opening up new avenues for big worlds on small platforms. Meanwhile, design wunderkind Keita Takahashi is bringing his first new IP since the remarkable Japan ... Source: music.guardian.co.uk --- 6 days ago

During today's second round of Nintendo press conference and gaming hands-on, Nintendo of Amercia unveiled two new titles headed to the Wii through its DOWNLOAD channel WiiWare. Tetris Party will include a cooperative mode, a competitive mode as well as traditional modes. You can also use the balance board to play the game. Leaning left to right on the board moves the piece, squatting turns the piece and tilting backwards and forwards speeds the drop. The game's shadow mode offers puzzles, and a climber mode that has you working to build to the roof. Finally stage racer has you controlling a single piece as you try to move it down through a rising wall of pieces. It's like a maze, it's pretty cool. The Hudson Soft game will hit the Wii "very soon" for 1,200 Wii points. In Boingz you play as stretchy little jelly dudes in a 2D adventure. Gamers use the Wii remote to grab and stretch the characters to flick them across the stage. The physics based game offers players multiple solutions to the game's many puzzles which typically involve saving other boinks. It's meant to be "casual friendly" though there is also a time challenge for more hardcore gamers. The game is being developed by Ninja Bee, but no price or date were announced. They wrapped things up by saing that the much anticipated 2008 Independent Games Festival winner World of Goo is hitting oct 13 on the WiiWare channel. AJ Glasser ... OK — it might be a day late but here is partial list of some of our favorite Pacific Northwest craft brewers who won medals at this year’s Great American Beer Festival. You can also click here to search a database, by state, to identify every 2008 GABF medalist in all 75 style categories. Very cool. You can also DOWNLOAD a pdf of all the winners if you want a handy list to refer to. But here is a quick summary of regional brewers who medaled in Denver if you can't get to that right away. Regular readers know that only one Idaho beer medaled at the 2008 GABF: Grand Teton Brewing Co.’s delicious Bitch Creek ESB won the silver in the American brown ale category. This was a well deserved win for Grand Teton brewmaster Rob Mullin and his crew and not really a surprise. The silver was their fourth medal for the Bitch Creek over the last five years. read more ... Source: www.intute.ac.uk --- 13 days ago

By Matt Singer and Alison Willmore Who would have guessed that Mickey Rourke would be hailed the comeback of the year, with his role in Darren Aronofsky's "The Wrestler" getting critical acclaim from all comers? It's been a tough road for the actor/former boxer, and he brings every bit of wear and tear to the film, which is all the better for it. In honor of Rourke, on this week's IFC News podcast we look at other actors who've faded from the spotlight only to make great comebacks, and a few who never managed to make their return work. And don't forget to check out our footage of Aronofsky, Rourke and co-star Marisa Tomei at the New York Film Festival.
