posted by beckychr007 We may never know why the federal government prosecuted DC Madam Deborah Jean Palfrey . Prostitution is not a federal crime . Apparently it started out as a tax investigation. But it turned out that Miss Palfrey always paid her taxes. So then they got her on racketeering and money laundering charges —her independent contractors would use the US mail to send money orders. But the big question is why. It is unlikely there was a vast conspiracy . Having spent more time than I would have liked in the criminal justice system , I know that a lot of the time investigations are started by some straight arrow investigators, and then no one can really stop it, and it takes on a life of its own. If it gets politically sensitive, the response of the legal system is to minimize the damage –and that is done with a few sacrificial lambs , and keeping a lid on the nasty parts. And in this prosecution judges , prosecutors and the media seemed extraordinarily determined to keep a cap on the amount of information revealed—and then the lives of several women were sacrificed on the altar of justice . Even though it is not unlikely that the investigation started when a couple of pious boy scouts at the Justice Department (and god knows there are enough of those in the current administration) stumbled on Miss Palfrey's escort service while looking into something like the shenanigans of Duke Cunningham , the timing is still curious. The ...

posted by TheImproper In the end, it was a punishment that definitely didn’t fit the crime. Deborah Jeane Palfrey, also known as the D.C. Madam for running a high-priced call girl ring in the nation’s capital, faced up to 55 years in jail. She was scheduled to be sentence this summer. But Palfrey, defiant to the end over her prosecution, was determined not to give in to the Feds. So, sometime yesterday, she walked out to a shed behind her mother’s house near St. Petersburg, Fla , and based on a preliminary investigation, she hanged herself. Read More . ...

posted by tatiana Deborah Jeane Palfrey , convicted a few weeks ago of being the D.C. Madam , was found dead in a shed near her mother’s home north of Tampa, Florida. The 52-year-old Palfrey, was found by her mother hanging from a nylon rope attached to the shed’s ceiling. This comes after her April 15 conviction, where a jury found her guilty of running a prostitution service that catered to members of Washington’s political elite. Senator David Vitter, of Louisiana, was a client of the service, which Palfrey ran for 13 years. Before her death, Palfrey maintained that her escort service did not engage in prostitution, and that if any women engaged in sex acts for money, they did so without her knowledge. Palfrey, who had yet to be sentenced, would’ve faced from 57 to 71 months in prison, which she refused to serve. “I am sure as heck not going to be going to federal prison for one day, let alone four to eight years because I’m shy about bringing in the deputy secretary of whatever,” Palfrey had told ABC last year after she released phone records revealing many of her clients. It appears the convicted D.C. Madam held true to her world, she’ll never spend one day in prison. This is the second suicide that has resulted from the discovery of Palfrey’s high end prostitution ring. Brandy Britton, a former professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, committed suicide in January after being arrested on prostitution charges. Im ...

Blues guitarist Bobby Parker played with all the greats, and he's called D.C. home for more than four decades. (Chris Stanford/The Washington Post) It's pretty shocking that guitarist Bobby Parker hasn't moved beyond the D.C. blues scene in the last four decades. The Louisiana native spent the 1950s touring and recording with Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and Jackie Wilson, then settled in D.C. in 1961. He almost took off once -- Jimmy Page tried to sign him to Led Zepplin's Swan Song label, which may have been payback for the way Page turned Parker's hit "You Got What It Takes" into the riff for "Moby Dick," but Parker never recorded a demo for Page. He still takes the stage at Madam's Organ on an occasional basis, but Parker turns 71 next month and his health isn't what it was -- hospital care has pushed his bills over $100,000. Madam's Organ owner Bill Duggan has organized a special fundraiser for Parker tonight, headlined by a band called the Coalition of the Willing . The dueling guitars belong to former Hungarian ambassador Andras Simonyi , whose love of rock made him a "Reliable Source" fixture during his tenure in Washington, and former Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter , who's traded yacht rock for positions as a defense consultant working on missile defense. (Weird. We know.) Also on tonight's bill are the Johnny Artis Band and local burlesque starlet Miss Kitty Victorian . All you gotta do ...

Three weeks after Deborah Jeane Palfrey hanged herself following her conviction by a federal jury for running whores in the nation’s capital, the judge has wiped the books clean of the fabled “D.C. Madam.” “IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that…the jury verdicts are vacated and the indictment in this matter is dismissed,” U.S. District Judge James Robertson said in a written order today. Palfrey’s sad end in a tiny shed outside her mom’s trailer in Florida capped an extraordinarily bizarre narrative involving a lady who ascended - though maybe migrated is a better word - from working class to working girls. Palfrey was always unfailingly polite to The Mouth. She often thanked us for exposing the surreal fantasy life of one of her escorts, Paula Neble, despite ad nauseum explanations that our expose of the fake Ph.D. researcher-turned-hooker wasn’t done as a favor to the defendant. Palfrey had sued Neble, a government witness, for breach of contract and her story was just a tasty subplot to the Madam’s saga. The truly cruel joke was on Debbie Palfrey in the end. The Pamela Martin & Associates escort service Palfrey happily touted in interviews as “high-priced” after her indictment turned out to be a pretty low rent operation when details emerged at trial this year. She had promised to topple johns at the highest levels of official Washington. But 13 years’ of phone toll records revealed only a State Department appointee ...

posted by RickAHyatt (Photos described below of DC Madam Deborah Palfrey, call girl Brandy Britton and Assemblyman Gary Condit in 1977 at http://picasaweb.google.com/RickAHyatt/RickAHyattEspionageAlbulm) Now I can't yet be positive on this new revelation, but I must admit being plagued by the Deborah Jeanne Palfrey "DC Madam Hanging Suicide."  I've speculated earlier that this must be another of Gary Condit's professional hits, simply because it might involve Dick Cheney, or other high-ranking corrupt, his "Clientele."  On the right, of course, is Brandy Britton, one of Palfrey's employed girls, who already earlier had (Purportedly) done the same thing. If there's two things I know about Condit, it is that he gets rid of long-standing witnesses he has known, like Vickie Wegerle, for example, who could ID him as the "CA Politician with Intel Connections investing the serial death of one of his constituents..." etc.   I am sure, just because of the reported close "Friendship" between he and Mr. Ramsey, that he's connected there, too.  (Jonbennet was also strangled.) While the Internet says Britton was 43, someone young for this scenario, let me explain the middle photo: US Army SP4 CID Interrogator Brian Larkin had long been "Investigating me as to my sexual orientation as a security breach" in the mid 70's, and we were paired to work and vacation together while in Germany.  That is where we met these girls "On a student exchange progra ...

The Wichita school district was wise to drop its effort to expand its northeast boundary. It was understandable that Bel Aire wanted to be served by one school district, rather than be split between Wichita and Circle districts. But Circle opposed the boundary change, and a state mediator declared an impasse in the negotiations. As interim Wichita superintendent Martin Libhart said, it was time to stop and move on. In Congress, sex scandals trump corruption Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., and others in Congress are uncomfortable enough with the seven felony counts against Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, to return political contributions they got from him. But columnist Margaret Carlson noted how differently Congress reacted to Stevens' scandal and that of Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho: "A full ranking of congressional sins would put gay sex at the top (Craig and former Florida Rep. Mark Foley, both quickly abandoned); heterosexual sex next (bad but not fatal, with Republican Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana surviving his extensive dealings with the 'D.C. Madam'); and way, way down, corruption. You can practically be caught with a bag of cash, as Rep. William Jefferson was (in his freezer) and continue serving." SUVs still popular in China China is on the verge of an automobile boom, the Washington Postreported. And many Chinese like SUVs and other big gas hogs. While SUV sales are tanking in most of the developed world, they're up 43 percent in Ch ...

I can’t believe the hubris of some of the folks in Washington. David Vitter, for example, has asked the Federal Election Commission if he can use campaign funds to pay for the $137,177 in legal expenses he had incurred after it was revealed that he was involved in a high priced Washington D.C. prostitution ring. Vitter has paid $70,000 of the legal fees personally, and is asking that the money be re-imbursed through his campaign funds. His attorneys argue that Vitter’s involvement in the matter was predicated solely on his status as a United States Senator and that others involved were not dragged into the legal proceedings and did not incur the related legal fees. Vitter has $1.6 million in his campaign coffers. Deborah Jeane Palfrey, the D. C. Madam involved in the case, was convicted in federal court in April of money laundering, mail fraud and conspiracy. Palfrey committed suicide in May, two weeks after her conviction. She faced four to six years in federal prison. Summary By shades ...
