Three weeks after Deborah Jeane Palfrey hanged herself following her conviction by a federal jury for running whores in the nation’s capital, the judge has wiped the books clean of the fabled “D.C. Madam.” “IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that…the jury verdicts are vacated and the indictment in this matter is dismissed,” U.S. District Judge James Robertson said in a written order today. Palfrey’s sad end in a tiny shed outside her mom’s trailer in Florida capped an extraordinarily bizarre narrative involving a lady who ascended - though maybe migrated is a better word - from working class to working girls. Palfrey was always unfailingly polite to The Mouth. She often thanked us for exposing the surreal fantasy life of one of her escorts, Paula Neble, despite ad nauseum explanations that our expose of the fake Ph.D. researcher-turned-hooker wasn’t done as a favor to the defendant. Palfrey had sued Neble, a government witness, for breach of contract and her story was just a tasty subplot to the Madam’s saga. The truly cruel joke was on Debbie Palfrey in the end. The Pamela Martin & Associates escort service Palfrey happily touted in interviews as “high-priced” after her indictment turned out to be a pretty low rent operation when details emerged at trial this year. She had promised to topple johns at the highest levels of official Washington. But 13 years’ of phone toll records revealed only a State Department appointee ...

The Wichita school district was wise to drop its effort to expand its northeast boundary. It was understandable that Bel Aire wanted to be served by one school district, rather than be split between Wichita and Circle districts. But Circle opposed the boundary change, and a state mediator declared an impasse in the negotiations. As interim Wichita superintendent Martin Libhart said, it was time to stop and move on. In Congress, sex scandals trump corruption Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., and others in Congress are uncomfortable enough with the seven felony counts against Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, to return political contributions they got from him. But columnist Margaret Carlson noted how differently Congress reacted to Stevens' scandal and that of Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho: "A full ranking of congressional sins would put gay sex at the top (Craig and former Florida Rep. Mark Foley, both quickly abandoned); heterosexual sex next (bad but not fatal, with Republican Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana surviving his extensive dealings with the 'D.C. Madam'); and way, way down, corruption. You can practically be caught with a bag of cash, as Rep. William Jefferson was (in his freezer) and continue serving." I can’t believe the hubris of some of the folks in Washington. David Vitter, for example, has asked the Federal Election Commission if he can use campaign funds to pay for the $137,177 in legal expenses he had incurred after it was revealed that he was involved in a high priced Washington D.C. prostitution ring. Vitter has paid $70,000 of the legal fees personally, and is asking that the money be re-imbursed through his campaign funds. His attorneys argue that Vitter’s involvement in the matter was predicated solely on his status as a United States Senator and that others involved were not dragged into the legal proceedings and did not incur the related legal fees. Vitter has $1.6 million in his campaign coffers. Deborah Jeane Palfrey, the D. C. Madam involved in the case, was convicted in federal court in April of money laundering, mail fraud and conspiracy. Palfrey committed suicide in May, two weeks after her conviction. She faced four to six years in federal prison. Summary By shades ... Find more results for DC Madam on RSSMicro.com |
