As head of the District Department of Transportation, Moneme has overseen traffic and transit projects, including the shutdown and rehabilitation of the Douglass Bridge, the traffic and transit plan for the new Nationals Park, development of the pedestrian safety master plan and the proposed Anacostia streetcar line. He also serves as a District representative on Metro's board of directors, a post he'll be leaving to join Metro's management. [Post reporters David Nakamura and Lena Sun have more about this on D.C. DC drivers average one accident every 5.4 years, making them the nation’s most dangerous, according to Allstate. 5.4 seems like a long time for some drivers, so I guess they’re not counting pulling too far into a parking space, bumping the car facing you, and driving to another space. AAA says we’re getting in wrecks because [...] ...

Sometimes overhearing things is funny because what we overhear fits some stereotype, or something we always believed — the ignorant tourist, annoying intern, etc. Sometimes they're funny because they reveal some secret, sinister thing the person didn't want to reveal. And sometimes they're good because they're just completely bizarro. Dance contest! Overheard of the Week At Rice (14th & Q NW): Group of 3 girls at dinner talking. Girl #1: "You should do the ovary dance." Girl #2: "What's the ovary dance?" Girls #1 and 3 (incredulously): "You don't know the ovary dance????" After the jump, sanitary habits, stupid bar questions, and a contest. Keep sending the good stuff to overheardindc (at) gmail (dot) com. Photo by techne ------ Draw your own conclusions Two 20s girls and guys walking down 18th Street on Saturday afternoon: Girl: "It was disgusting!" Guy: "She didn't wipe??" ----- Zing On the staircase of The Reef in Adams Morgan: Guy to bouncer: "Is the roof up there?" (points up) Bouncer: "Well, we tried to put it in the basement." Guy: "Oh... ok." ------ Sickly hilarious! Overheard on a GUTS (Georgetown University shuttle) bus: Preppy Georgetown student in an extremely agitated voice and (from context) referring to himself: "It's sick that a father would hire a private detective to track his own son!" ------ And they've been together to this day. Abington resident Matthew Delaney recently made a few friends in high places. Friends who travel more than 200,000 miles up into the atmosphere, to be exact. Delaney, who currently teaches at Nova Southeastern University in Florida, flew to Washington D. C. to discuss education reform with members of Congress on July 17, and while there, he had the opportunity to meet the STS-124 Discovery Spacecraft astronauts, fresh from a mission to the International Space Station. “The astronauts were the high point,” Delaney said. “They were really warm and gracious and gave me a flight patch that they wear on their uniform.” Delaney traveled to the nation’s capital as the team leader of the Massachusetts delegation of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs). During his visit with them, Delaney said he congratulated the astronauts for their successful mission to the space station, and discussed their significance in education as role models.  “It was exciting because I had heard about them and I follow the flights a bit,” Delaney said. “It was exciting to talk to them about their specialty. They’re very highly educated and highly trained. I thanked them for setting a standard in being a model for students in science. One of the astronauts was from Japan and we talked a little about education in Japan.”  The STS-124 crew was in Washington, D.C. to visit wounded veterans at local hospitals and to present American flags and attend a reception in th ...
