OK, so this has a snowball's chance in hell at happening, but it needs to be said. DAYTONA International Speedway needs to be included in NASCAR's Chase for the Sprint Cup. Some way. Somehow. NASCAR needs to make this a reality. This is change we can believe in. Sure, restrictor-plate racing is unpredictable and doesn't represent the majority of racing that occurs on the Sprint Cup tour. But there is no denying it's the most exciting form of auto racing today and NASCAR fans can't get enough of it. How can you not include NASCAR's premier racing facility in that mix? Replace Talladega if you must. Replace Homestead if you can. But let's find some way to get DAYTONA and it's superspeedway thrills involved in this Chase for the Sprint Cup. Now, I know this: Drivers won't support such a bold suggestion. There are too many variables out of their control at superspeedways. The difference between first and 43rd is minute. Stress levels soar. Tempers flare. Wrecks create chaos, danger and disgust. But NASCAR's champion should be crowned at DAYTONA. Not Homestead. Or New Hampshire. Or cookie-cutter Kansas Speedway. I've thought this way for a while, and after watching Sunday's Amp Energy 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, I'm completely convinced that DAYTONA should play a key -- if not final role -- in the NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup picture. ...

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s had a bad day. First he had a problem with his motor, and had to replace it. That means Earnhardt will start at the back of the field on Sunday. Then, his tire blew and messed up his car during practice. The car was so badly damaged Earnhardt would've had to go to a backup car even if David Gilliland hadn't slammed into him. The car they wrecked was Earnhardt's Bud Shootout car (he won that race), but the good news is his backup is his DAYTONA 500 car, which ran pretty well back in February. Earnhardt is surprisingly upbeat after this rough day. And he thinks his team will be more mentally tough on Sunday because of the adversity they went through today.  "It would be worse somewhere else," Earnhardt said. "The way these cars drive, it doesn’t matter how good. I was talking to david about his car and I felt sorry for him getting swept up in that and he said his backup car wasn’t that good. But I told him his car wouldn’t matter in a place like this. He might have more fun with it. I have a really good car but even if we weren’t sure about how good our car was that we’re bringing to the race, I’d still feel pretty confident. It’s a fun racetrack.
