Weather knows no borders. It’s something I have said before now on-air, but never has it been more true than with the events of the past month. Just days after Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar, China suffered its worst earthquake in over 30 years and in the United States an unusually severe, killer tornado season has begun. May 2008 will long be remembered as one of the worst months for natural disasters. Cyclone Nargis will go down in history as one of the deadliest tropical cyclones of all time. With the unofficial death Toll of 100,000 people and over 200,000 missing, it currently ranks as the 10th deadliest storm in world history, but as aid efforts continue to be blocked, that death Toll could rise further making Cyclone Nargis second only to the Great Bhola Cyclone of 1970 which struck Bangledesh, killing close to half a million people. With the onset of the Southwest Monsoon season, weather conditions across Myanmar will only worsen, heavy rain and flooding will compound the misery and increase the risk of disease for the hundreds of thousands of survivors. This month on Weather FX, we focus on severe weather and in particular – severe thunderstorms. What makes some parts of the world more vulnerable than others? Why and how does a tornado form? Just how dangerous is lightning and where does it strike most? These are a few of the questions we hope to answer in this month’s show, at the same time we’ll give you some tips on how to stay ...

Typhoon Fengshen may be the deadliest Pacific tropical Cyclone since 1991. The death Toll in the Philippines now stands at 598 dead or missing on land, with another 800 missing and presumed dead in the wake of the sinking of the ferry MV Princess of Stars. Fengshen (the Mandarin Chinese name for the God of Wind) made landfall over the northern Philippines Saturday, triggering rains and landslides that destroyed 34,000 buildings and damaged 53,000 more, causing an es...

The world's weather can have an enormous impact on a local scale. From a whirlwind to a Cyclone, or an ice storm to a drought, the weather takes its Toll. But did you know that the whole world's weather is capable of making the whole Earth move? As it rotates, the Earth wobbles as it spins on its axis. And as it slows down, the planet develops a host of different wobbles, ranging in time period from a few minutes to billions of years. ...

Almost two months after Cyclone Nargis devastated Burma, the preliminary findings of the Post-Nargis Joint Assessment team dispatched to the damaged areas have confirmed that more immediate, lifesaving relief still needs to be provided. At the meeting to discuss these findings, the military regime nudged the official death Toll up to 84,537 from 77,738. ...

Despite being ruled by the “glorious and wonderful government” of Than Shwe and his cronies things continue to get worse and worse in Myanmar. According to the United Nations there is still little progress towards fixing the damage caused by Cyclone Nargis earlier this year. Officially at least 140,000 people died but many believe the true death Toll may actually be closer to 500,000 . According to the relief agencies by now they should be in the process of rebuilding homes, schools and other facilities but so far very little seems to have been done. Unfortunately these kinds of stories tend to attract a lot of attention for a few days and then fall under the radar. It is sad to say that there will probably be very little done to help the suffering people of Burma/Myanmar. ...

Two months after a Cyclone savaged the fertile Irrawaddy Delta, in Burma's southwest, the bones of drowning victims still clutter the muddy banks of waterways. Aid workers say that the majority of survivors of Tropical Cyclone Nargis have received at least some help but that few are even remotely equipped to make their way in coming months. Some communities have only recently been reached by aid teams, who had journeyed for hours on foot, by motorcycle and by boat. According to a study published last month by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, decades of illegal encroachment and government-sanctioned neglect had seriously degraded the mangrove forests in the Irrawaddy Delta. "If there had been decent mangrove on the shorelines, the death Toll would have been cut in half," said Lucas Riegger, a U.N. vulnerability analyst and mapping specialist. ...

CARY, NC, May 13, 2008 —As the beleaguered nation of Myanmar continues to suffer from the mass devastation caused recently by Tropical Cyclone Nargis, international Christian broadcaster Trans World Radio (TWR) plans to produce special radio programs offering critically needed health and social care information, emotional support and spiritual care for the hurting and hopeless. TWR's announcement to begin airing these programs to Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) is especially timely given news reports indicating that the estimated death Toll is upwards of 100,000 people, with another 1 million having been displaced from their homes. TWR’s over-the-airwave assistance strategy involves offering a full year of dedicated 30-minute broadcasts that will provide biblical counseling and care five days a week. The programming will be specifically designed to help restore the lives and spirits of Myanmar's people. The need for these broadcasts is underscored by the reality that the country has no electricity or telephone connections. Consequently, solar- and battery-powered radio becomes a vital link to the outside world for storm survivors. "We continue to pray for the Lord's intervention to comfort, heal and provide ways for scores of people in Myanmar who have lost loved ones or have lost their homes and belongings," says TWR's Andrew Sundar, ministry director for Southeast Asia. "Currently, we are broadcasting existing shortwave programs t ...

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice praised China on Sunday for its efforts to cope with the massive earthquake that struck southwestern Sichuan province in May. Her comments came during a tour of the disaster zone. Stephanie Ho reports from Beijing. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met with quake victims and toured a relief camp in hard-hit Dujiangyan, a city near the epicenter of the May 12 earthquake. "I'm tremendously impressed with the recovery, with the resiliency and spirit of the people," Rice said. She was briefed by local officials about the devastation, and spoke in English to young children who survived the quake. The death Toll from the huge earthquake is near 70,000 people, with many more still missing and believed to be buried under the rubble. "With the disaster with this magnitude, no one can do it alone. And we are very glad that the Chinese government, the Chinese people, have reached out to the international community, allow the international community to help," she added. Contrast With Burma She contrasted China's response with that of neighboring Burma, where more than 130,000 people died from Cyclone Nargis, which also struck in May. She said the Burmese government has put up barriers to efforts by the international community to help the Burmese people. "We are all trying to encourage the Burmese to allow us to help the people there. Many lives could have been saved, perhaps still many more could still be sav ...

Last Saturday, Cyclone Nargis struck the coast of Myanmar, hitting the area of the Irrawaddy Delta the hardest. Initial estimates of the number killed by the Cyclone climbed from 350 to over 10,000 in a few hours. The most current figures estimate 23,000 killed and 37,000 still missing, many presumed dead. US observers reported two days ago that they expect the death Toll will climb to over 100,000. Currently there is heavy rain forecast for many still flooded areas, and the Myanmarese military is severely overmatched for the rescue and aid tasks necessary. The United States, a number of other world nations and private aid organizations have all pledged aid for the people of Myanmar. The country's delicate and ineffective infrastructure was totally decimated by this tragedy, leaving the people without homes, the ability to bury dead, clean water and food. Currently the Myanmarese government has been intercepting aid shipments, preventing them from reaching the people and asking for money instead of food. They are also holding up the approval of visas for foreign relief organizations, preventing them from entering the country. Please pray for the people of Myanmar. They are a nation of 600,000 Christians, and millions of Bhuddists. This terrible tragedy will surely leave many asking how such a terrible event could occur, so please pray that they would find rest and comfort in the Comfortor, and that God would reveal himself to them in am ...

It is feared up to 1 million people may have died in this disaster, and although this is disputed, if Nargis did kill this many people, it would be the deadliest Cyclone ever recorded, and the third deadliest natural disaster ever recorded in history, behind the Yellow River floods of 1887 and 1931 in China. At least 10,000 people have been reported to have perished in the delta town of Bogale .One aid worker has claimed that the death Toll from the Cyclone and its aftermath may reach 300,000; if this was correct it would be the 2nd deadliest Cyclone and fourth deadliest natural disaster. ~ Wikipedia Got an email from Fide Trainer / FM Peter Long relaying the appeal by Myanmar Chess Federation for donation.
