Forget the big kid at recess trying to steal a smaller student’s lunch money. The Freetown-Lakeville Middle School is targeting a different type of bullying — through the computer. The school district, in conjunction with the school’s Parent Teacher Organization and the Freetown Police Department, will try to battle it by hosting a Cyber bullying and Internet safety seminar for parents at the school’s Harrison Library on Monday at 7 p.m. Members of the Police Department will be there and will help give parents the strategies. “As a school, we don’t see Cyber bullying as a problem in school,” Principal David Patota said. “But it does get brought back to the school by students who might have had a problem outside of school while they were at home.” Patota added that the school wanted to create a forum with the Police Department and the PTO. “We are not having an overabundance of bullying but we get a fallout of it at school,” he said, stressing that students who are engaged in Cyber bullying activity at home will sometimes bring their issues to school. “It’s more of a home issue, we feel, but as a school, we feel we need to support our parents and the community as much as possible.” A link on the school’s Web site says Cyber bullying is dangerous because the speed of the technology helps derogative remarks travel quickly and become readily available to many people.
