Before there was… … there was… Like previous Beat Drop subject Isaac Hayes (and unlike all other Beat Drop subjects), Curtis Mayfield has not produced any hip hop records — at least not directly. However, he has produced, written, and performed (either with his heavenly voice or ability to play multiple instruments) many great songs that have [...] ... Source: www.oldies.com --- 32 days ago

Músicas como "(Don't Worry) If There's A Hell Bellow", a sensacional "Move On Up", "We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue", as belas "The Making Of You" e "The Other Side Of Town", fazem parte deste LP, que deve ser ouvido de modo especial para se prestar atenção nas s utilezas das composições de Mayfield. ... I grew up in the 70s in a place called Tenafly, New Jersey -- an extremely white town that paradoxically became the title to a short-lived black detective TV series. Apparently some producer was driving down 9W towards New York City, and thought Tenafly sounded like Superfly. Ironically, I don't think there were any black students in my school until years later when the great guitarist and singer George Benson recorded "Breezin" and moved down the block. So clearly, I didn't exactly grow up in the shadow of Stax Records, but my world was opened up big time when I bought "Theme From Shaft" on eight track. I later bought Isaac Hayes' classic album Black Moses . This real sexy, funky, soul music forever blew my Caucasian mind, and led me to explore many of the greatest sounds ever made -- not only by Hayes, but contemporaries like Curtis Mayfield, Sly Stone, George Clinton, Barry White and countless other geniuses of soul during that era. As a writer, producer, artist and even voice over talent on South Park, Hayes left his mark - "can you dig it?" Thank you, Black Moses, for taking this lifelong fan to the promised land. ... I've been playing Isaac Hayes CD since his death Aug. 10. It has been bittersweet. I know the brother had not made a record in some time. but there was some comfort knowing that any day he could come out with a hit song that would take us old heads back to the good days when crooners like Ike and Barry White and Al Green sang rhythm and blues onto the pop charts. Today we add Isaac Hayes into the Old School Blues Hall of Fame. He joins Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield, Luther Vandross, Otis Redding, Earth, Wind and Fire and James Brown. This month will be the first month in which we add two artists to the Old School Blues Hall. Isaac Hayes was a talented composer, songwriter and singer. He and his writing partner put Sam and Dave on the charts with songs like Soul Man , Hold On I'm Coming , and When Something Is Wrong With My Baby .. But when Ike came on the scene with a solo album in 1969, he took the soul and jazz crowd by storm. Hot Buttered Soul is one of the essential black albums of all-time Just to prove it was no fluke, he followed his first effort with Black Moses and then scoed The Theme from Shaft . Hayes later acted in blaxploitation movies such as Truck Turner, had a recurring role on The Rockford Files and later was the voice of Chef on South Park. He also acted in the film Hustle and Flow. Isaac Hayes was known for his bald head, love raps and his smooth and deep voice. What's your favorite Isaac Hay ... Source: weblogs.sun-sentinel.com --- 9 days ago
Some of you may think that B.B. Kng is the blues and you aren't wrong. One day it will be his day to enter into the Old School Blues Hall of Fame. But today is Etta James' day. Etta James brought me into the blues when I was a young boy. I had not heard of B.B. King or Albert King. My introduction to the blues was Etta James singing All I Could Do Is Cry . There was something about her voice that got my attention. It sent me searching through my Aunt Gail's record collection searching for Etta James music. Gail was my aunt but only three years older than me. I didn't find any and was disappointed. But every time I heard Etta on the radio, I always turned it up. The songs were so sad, even when they were sung about happy times. At Last is such a great song about finally finding a love -- but it still is so sad. Chico the Virgo says the blues about something good that's gone bad. My favorite Etta James song changes from time to time. I'd Rather Go Blind .or Sunday Kind of Love or At Last . usually hit the top of my charts. But I dig the upbeat Pushover and Tell Mama , too. So with Isaac Hayes' instant entry into the Old School Blues Hall of Fame earlier this month, we will begin to add two a month. Etta James and Isaac Hayes join Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield, Luther Vandross, Otis Redding, Earth, Wind and Fire, and James Brown in the Old School Blues Hall of Fame. ...

Digable Planets live! (Butterfly, Lady Bug Mecca and Doodle Bug) Blu The Kev Choice Ensemble Fiyawata Hakobo on the 1s & 2s Though they were not the first to synthesize jazz and hip-hop, Digable Planets epitomized the laid-back charm of jazz hipsters better than any group before or since. Their 1993 debut, "Reachin' A New Refutation of Time and Space" took us on a mellow ride laced with samples from Sonny Rollins and Curtis Mayfield and offered the essential hit, "Rebirth of Slick: Cool Like Dat." "Cool Like Dat" topped the charts and can still ignite a party fifteen years later. After earning a Grammy Award for "Best New Group," Digable Planets went onto create their best album to date, "Blowout Comb." Successfully fusing jazz and hip hop, old school and street - Digable Planets eventually hit a roadblock, after creative differences prompted nearly a decade of solo projects and collaborations for the individual members. As the ten year anniversary of "Blowout Comb" approached, the group announced their reunion and promptly recorded "Beyond the Spectrum: The Creamy Spy Chronicles." The quintessential label, Blue Note, released the work in 2005. Tonight, we welcome Ladybug Mecca, Butteryfly and Doodlebug (as Digable Planets) because they cool like dat. 2007 Spitkicker.com rookie of the year Blu (Blu & Exile), the Kev Choice Ensemble and DJ Hakobo support. ... Mostly eclipsed by its own soundtrack, this is still a very good exploitation film. "You better take real good care of me. Nothing, nothing better happen to one hair on my gorgeous head. Can you dig it?" - Priest (Ron O'Neal)1972’s Super Fly has always been eclipsed by its own soundtrack, which is both a testament to the Curtis Mayfield-composed songs and the lack of impact made by Gordon Parks Jr. in the... ...
