In today’s paper, Patricia Cohen has an article on the generational shift in American college professors, with the ‘68ers retiring and being replaced by younger, less ideological colleagues. For further reading on the Culture Wars of the 1980s and their aftermath, I prepared this reading list last summer, when I looked back on Allan Bloom’s [...] ...

I had an epiphany while watching Michelle Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention last night: that speech was not for me. I'm sure I knew that already to some extent, but it really became clear to me in the middle of that speech as I realized that I am entirely immune to platitudinous applause lines. It has nothing to do with the speech, which I thought was well written and crafted by the speechwriters to put to rest some of the lingering doubts about her husband among undecided voters. It had even less to do with Michelle Obama's performance, which was pretty much perfect. She's nearly as good a speaker as her husband is (not to mention really attractive....oops, I guess I mentioned it). It's just the nature of such speeches, which are filled with lines that are so canned that they could have been written by a software program -- Political Inspiration for Windows Vista. A Time blog digs up an interesting quote from John McCain in 1999: "I'd love to see a point where it is irrelevant, and could be repealed because abortion is no longer necessary," McCain told the Chronicle in 1999. "But certainly in the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade, which would then force X number of women in America to [undergo] illegal and dangerous operations." I've said all along that the religious right is correct not to trust McCain. He isn't one of them and he never has been. He's been frantically pandering to them for the last few years because he knows he has to do so to have any chance of winning the presidency, but that isn't what he really believes. His real beliefs were stated when he called Falwell and Robertson "agents of intolerance." He's not really anti-abortion, nor is he a particularly religious man at all. Remember the debate coach who dropped his pants and mooned another coach during an argument? He's history . Fort Hays State University held a press conference and announced that William Shanahan was being fired and the entire debate program suspended indefinitely. The president continued: "Professor Shanahan's conduct falls below the standard established to protect our university, its faculty, students and alumni. As a representative of FHSU, he had a duty of care that was seriously breached by his behavior." "If the coach of one of our athletic teams became angry and 'mooned' officials, student athletes and fans during a sports event, he or she would no longer be a coach at Fort Hays State University," President Hammond said. "Standards for our debate program are certainly just as high." Read the rest of this post... | Read the comments on this post... ... Source: www.scienceblogs.com --- 6 days ago
I often find myself watching commercials on TV and just shaking my head that anyone could fall for such obvious nonsense in a marketing pitch. This is particularly true when it comes to the vast number of non-regulated medical products whose commercials are virtually ubiquitous on TV. Can any educated person watch the commercials for Extenze, the pill that claims to expand the size of "that certain part of the male anatomy" without laughing at such a transparent fraud? Another one that has long irritated me is that commercial for footpads that remove "toxins" from your body through your feet while you sleep. It's an "ancient Japanese secret" you see. Here's one of the commercials: Read the rest of this post... | Read the comments on this post... ... Source: www.scienceblogs.com --- 6 days ago
At the Netroots Nation conference in Austin, Markos threw a great party at a bar called Maggie Mae's and they had an incredible zydeco band from New Orleans called Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band. McCain's "elitist" attack just gets more idiotic by the moment. His new ad actually includes this line about Obama: "Celebrities don't have to worry about family budgets. But we sure do." Well yes, John McCain has to worry about his family budget. That budget, by the way, includes $273,000 a year for "household help." That's $50,000 more every year just for servants, maids and gardeners than the median value of a family house in this country. But Obama, son of a single mother who sometimes went on welfare who had to work his way through college, he's the elitist. Seriously, how fucking stupid do you have to be to buy this bullshit? How could someone stupid enough to swallow such nonsense even manage to own a television set to watch the commercial that contains it? And why aren't intelligent voters pissed off as can be at McCain for insulting their intelligence thinking that they're stupid enough to fall for it? Read the comments on this post... ... Could be happening in California : Butteville Union Elementary School District trustees, as well as school administrators, are considering adding "intelligent design" to the school's seventh-grade science curriculum. In a discussion on an information/action agenda item, "Evolution versus Intelligent Design Taught in the Classroom," during the district's board meeting last Wednesday, trustees agreed to seek legal counsel regarding the issue. The Alberta "Human Rights" Commission has dismissed the charges against Ezra Levant over his publishing of the infamous Danish Muhammed cartoons in a now-defunct magazine he owned. Levant's scathing response to the dismissal is almost entirely on the money, in my view. That the absurd charges were dismissed does not mean that the Canadian hate speech system works; the fact that such charges can be brought in the first place, costing the man an ungodly amount of money to defend himself, means the system is inherently unjust and should be done away with. There is no "human right" not to be offended by someone else's views, period. Long excerpt below the fold. Read the rest of this post... | Read the comments on this post... ...

Bilerico makes a strong case that Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana is going to be Obama's VP pick and that it will be announced in the next couple days. I think it would be a good pick. He's more conservative than Obama, which is a necessity on the ticket. He's from a key swing state where Obama is doing pretty well and has a chance to flip and that pick would help him do it. If he flips Indiana, it's game over folks. Read the comments on this post... ... Source: www.scienceblogs.com --- 19 days ago
It's absurd enough when the fundies pray for rain to end a drought, but now Dobson's group is calling on people to pray that it rains on Obama's acceptance speech at the Democratic convention (which he intends to deliver outdoors at Invesco Field). Yep, that's exactly what Jesus would do. Read the comments on this post... ... Source: www.scienceblogs.com --- 19 days ago

The Worldnutdaily has printed a 10,000 (!) word essay by Alan Keyes ranting about pretty much everything. It's quite amusing to read. The point of the rant is that McCain and Obama are both evil and you shouldn't accept the lesser of two evils. And he uses a rather colorful analogy to illustrate his point: Read the rest of this post... | Read the comments on this post... ... Find more results for Culture Wars on RSSMicro.com |
