Much like the present, the future has its share of Cults and fringe religions. Some are scams, some are a genuine search for enlightenment, and some are simply a fanatical devotion to a single person or task. Want to stay clear of cultish influence? We give you a who’s who of Cults from science fiction, and tell you how they attract their adherents. The Church of Humanity (Marvel Universe) System of Belief: An off-shoot of the mutant-hating Friends of Humanity, the Church of Humanity believes that humans were created in God’s image, but mutants were not. They believe that this justifies fervent violence toward mutantkind. How they lure you in: As with any racial supremacy group, they appeal to your sense of inferiority. The U-Men (Marvel Universe) System of Belief: Antithetical to the racial purity-loving Church of Humanity but no less destructive, the human U-Men believe it is their right to harvest and transplant mutant body parts into their own bodies, giving them mutant powers. Believing that the world is tainted and imperfect, the U-Men refuse to touch the outside world, wearing special self-contained suits and eating highly processed foods. How they lure you in: With the promise of superpowers. Necroism ( The Chronicles of Riddick ) System of Belief: Necromongers believe that the natural state of life is in the Underverse, another universe where the dead of our universe come back to life. Thus, all life in this universe is ...

“…if you believe in it, it is a religion or perhaps ‘the’ religion; and if you do not care one way or another about it, it is a sect; but if you fear and hate it, it is a cult.” Leo Pfeffer. A humorous quotation, but one that is uncomfortably close to reality. This is so true of [...] ...

Yulia Latynina has a brilliantly sarcastic column in the Moscow Times today, which highlights the incongruity of Russia's fervent anti-Westernism combined with deep appreciation for its material goods, services, banks, and institutions. I guess if North Korea were manufacturing ridiculously expensive luxury watches or Venezuela pumping out gold-plated cell phones, the politics of consumerism might be a little less complicated for the Kremlin-aires. Anthropologists have written a great deal about the 20th-century "cargo Cults" that arose in Melanesia. Adherents of those primitive faiths believed that all the amazing Western goods (or cargo) such as automobiles, guns and clothing were originally created by spiritual means by their ancestors. These modern goods had been intended for the Melanesian people, but the cursed white people stole everything before the goods could be delivered to the Melanesians. After seeing real airplanes for the first time, the Melanesians built one from sand, thinking it would fly. The Kremlin has taken a page from cargo Cults. It is trying to build democracy, a market economy, and it is attempting to enforce peace. But the only problem is that all of these institutions are also made of sand. Like the Melanesian airplane, none of them can fly very well. ...

On the same documentary on history channel I mentioned in susan atkins thread I watched about this german cult leader who moved his followers to Chile to avoid charges of child molestation. This has to be one of the most horrible stories I have heard, he enslaved al his followers even using the concentration camp slogan ''arbeit macht frei'' This man has a perversion about kids and even used torture, hormones and electric shock to slow the growing process of his little girls. He forbid sex between his followers even those married while he carried on raping and god knows what to the orphanage he created for the Chilian leader. This is for sure one of the worse cases of abuse in a cult I have ever heard about. /en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Schäfer I will add to this as i do further research if all have the stomach for it. OFF TO BED? GOOD EVENING EVERYONE:grouphug: ...

By Lynne M. I absolutely loved the movie The King of Kong. I enjoyed every character and his or her addition to the duel between Billy and Steve.
