CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs have acquired infielder Jeff Baker from the Colorado Rockies for minor league right-handed pitcher Al Alburquerque and designated infielder Ryan Freel for assignment. Baker was activated off the Rockies' 60-day disabled list and was to join the Cubs for their Thursday night game at Wrigley Field against the Milwaukee Brewers. Baker batted .268 with 12 home runs and 48 RBI in 104 games last year for the Rockies and can play several infield positions and the outfield. He's played only 12 games this season because of a sprained left hand that sent him to the disabled list April 29. Baker is a career .257 hitter over five major league seasons with 22 homers and 88 RBIs. Alburquerque was 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in 24 relief appearances for Single-A Daytona this season. Freel, acquired by the Cubs from Baltimore for Joey Gathright on May 8, batted .143 in 14 games with Chicago. More on Sports ...

Expect the Cubs to announce today they've acquired infielder Jeff Baker from the Colorado Rockies. Details should be forthcoming, but also look for the Cubs to designate infielder-outfielder Ryan Freel for assignment, effectively ending his short stay with the Cubs. Baker, 27, has been on the 60-day DL since early May with a left-hand injury, and he'll have to take a physical as early as today with the Cubs. This year, he was 3-for-23 in 12 games. For his career, Baker has a batting average of .257, an OBP of .313, a slugging percentage of .458 and an OPS of .771. The Rockies took the right-handed hitting Baker in the fourth round of the 2002 draft. In 2007, Baker played in 144 games with the Rockies, batting .222 with an OBP of .296 and 4 homers. read more ...

The Akron Zoo jaguar Cubs, born at the zoo on March 3, are now on exhibit everyday starting at 10 a.m. The Cubs will be on exhibit for at least a couple of hours each day with their mother Naom. The public naming contest has also concluded and the Cubs’ names will be Nakita, Bella and LeBron. The zoo held a public naming contest over the past month and public could vote for at least a dollar, for their favorite name, at the zoo. The top vote getter was Bella, which means beautiful, followed by LeBron and Nakita, which means unconquerable. The contest raised $170 for jaguar conservation. The Cubs, one boy and two girls, currently weigh 16-22 pounds. The Cubs will remain at the Akron Zoo for several more months. When the Cubs reach about a year old, the Jaguar Species Survival Plan (SSP) will make recommendations to relocate the Cubs to another accredited zoo. The jaguar SSP is a captive breeding program sponsored by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Jaguars are listed as an endangered species by the US Fish & Wildlife Service. There are currently about 100 jaguars in the United States at AZA accredited facilities. Jaguars are one of over 24 SSP’s in which the Akron Zoo participates. The Akron Zoo, which is home to over 700 animals from around the world, is open 361 days a year. Hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and admission is $10 for adults, $7.50 for seniors, $6 for children (2-14). Children under two are free and parking is ...
