The Friday night presidential debate wasn’t the only political face-to-face that was in doubt. The candidates for the U.S. Congressional District 21 seat can’t even seem to get together on a time and place. For weeks the Raul Martinez campaign has said that the former Hialeah mayor had agreed to seven different times and venues to square off against incumbent Republican Lincoln Diaz-Balart. But Diaz-Balart had not confirmed. Now Diaz-Balart spokeswoman Ana Carbonell says her candidate has agreed to an Oct.3 debate in English at WFOR-Ch 4 studios, and another in Spanish Oct. 11 in front of the Univision’s Miami cameras. But Aaron Blye, a spokesman for the Democrat, says he has not seen any proposal from either station. Gotta give Mark Cuban credit for publicly having Josh Howard's back, even if Cuban's take on J-Ho's latest bonehead incident makes absolutely no sense. Owner Mark Cuban said the Mavericks dealt with Howard's flag football episode after it happened in July. "That said, we will be going through some advanced communication-skill sessions together this training camp," Cuban said Tuesday. "I have explained to him that cellphone cameras are not your friend and that what you think you said on camera is never what people will hear when it shows up on YouTube or TV. "There is only one universal response that works: 'Both teams played hard.'" What exactly did Howard think he was saying when he looked into the camera and came up with this doozy? "'The Star-Spangled Banner' is going on. I don't celebrate this [expletive]. I'm black." So the solution is apparently advising Howard to give nothing but boring, bland quotes, which is what he has been delivering in the Mavs' locker room on a regular basis anyway. Mark Cuban posted a bunch of nasty e-mails on his blog this morning from folks reacting to Josh Howard's stupid comment about the Star-Spangled Banner . Many of the e-mails were racist in nature, and all the senders' e-mail addresses were there for the world to see. Cuban had second thoughts and removed the e-mails from his blog. He explains why in a post headlined, "I made my point." An excerpt: I thought it was important to point out the hatred and ignorance of so many who quickly judge people they have never met, based purely on soundbites and headlines. If you think you know any public figure based on what you see on TV or read on the internet or in newspapers, you are sadly mistaken. I wanted to point out the irony of them experiencing the onslaught of attention from suddenly and unexpectedly being placed in the media spotlight from a throwaway comment. Try being in a position of always having to be "on" and checking for cameras, because if you let down your guard, any soundbite, even one as short as 11 seconds, can turn into headline news across the country, no matter what the context. Its not always easy. Nor is it easy to just accept that its part of being a "public figure" . Those are good points, and they could spark much intelligent debate. If you read the news last week, you probably saw that presidential candidate John McCain's speech was watched on TV by a record-breaking 38.9 million people , roughly 600,000 more than the number of viewers who tuned in to watch Barack Obama's acceptance speech a week earlier, according to Nielsen. But Nielsen's numbers don't tell the whole story. Television is one thing, and the internet is an entirely different beast. Online, speeches from Obama and Biden have so far garnered 3.7 million viral views while McCain's and Palin's speeches have been viewed 2.4 million times, according to Visible Measures, an online video measurement group . It's hard to dismiss the significance or power of broadcast television, but it's also negligent to exclude the significance of the internet. All told, there were 7.8 million DNC viral videos viewed, across 278 different video placements, compared to 3 million RNC video views online in 265 unique video placements, according to Visible Measures. (To be honest, I'm more offended when patriotism is enforced at the expense of people's rights.) So in that respect, I'm happy Cuban didn't overreact. On the other hand, I'm also annoyed at Cuban's response. Is a lack of media training really the problem? I don't believe it, and I doubt Cuban does either. Howard has been in the league too long not to understand the perils of fame or know the evils of the camera phone. If I had to guess, I'd say Howard's "problem" is that he simply doesn't care about courting public approval.
