Pesky "recording commitments" have forced Crystal Castles to nix a whole bunch of UK dates that the blippy duo had planned for September. To make up for it, the Castles have thrown several more UK club dates onto their August itinerary since our last report , not quite covering the spread, but certainly earning them some brownie points with the folks who'd otherwise be stuck with the play at home version . And that shit is just not the same. Perhaps this will prove even further solace: September 22, Different Recordings will issue a single for the HEALTH/Crystal Castles jam "Crimewave" in the UK. While they were reshuffling their schedule, the Castles also found time to build up a fall North American tour. Their next dates take place this weekend in Japan at Summersonic. read more ... Oh, sure, you're gonna look a little silly in that Alice Glass getup you've been putting together in your mind. Still, unlike all those other Halloween parties simply playing Crystal Castles on the speakers, Los Angeles' HARD Haunted Mansion will play host to those Crystal Castles live and in person on All Hallows Eve. The all-night, indoor/outdoor "Halloween-costumed mega-party" goes down October 31 (naturally) on the grounds of the city's Shrine Expo Hall. Beyond the Castles, the Mansion will house performances from Soulwax, Simian Mobile Disco, a DJ set from Justice, Boys Noize, Deadmau5, Daedelus, Luckyiam, and more. No matter what outfit you may don on the big night, remember: it can't possibly be scarier than the sight of a bunch of bloghouse bloggers getting their groove on. ... At one point in the zombie-haunted "Crimewave" video, there's a shot of giant wooden swans. Not that Los Angeles noise-rockers HEALTH 's original track on their 2007 self-titled debut was an ugly duckling, but 8-bit Canadian duo Crystal Castles happen to be pretty good at turning musical creatures of all kinds into spooky electro-punk umm gold. (White Lies' "Death" was their most recent beneficiary .) "Crimewave (Crystal Castles vs. HEALTH)", on this year's impressive Crystal Castles , morphs the plodding percussion and wounded-lion guitars of HEALTH's recording into a thing with blippy synths, gothic moodiness, and a precise New Order beat. Singer Jacob Duzsik's voice gets Knife-d into alien oblivion. The video contains images from Bruce LaBruce's film Otto; or, Up With Dead People interspersed with images of the group's live shows. So many remixes come down the pike these days, often with artists typically better known for their own songs remixing lesser-known artists, that it's understandable if you, like me, regard blog-friendly tracks like "Death (Crystal Castles Remix)" with skepticism. But then you (I) remember that this is a Crystal Castles remix, and how good their previous remixes have been-- like the ones for GoodBooks' "Leni" , the Little Ones' "Lovers Who Uncover" , and HEALTH's "Crimewave" , among many others. This time around, Crystal Castles half Ethan Kath does his usually spooky analog bleepy thing with a theatrical new-new-wave anthem by London band White Lies . "Death (Crystal Castles Remix)" opens with a dramatic, echoey croon and symphonic synths, reminding me of Jens Lekman-like Swede Joel Alme if he had a bit of Ian Curtis gloom. But then come the crunching, lo-fi beats and whirling, spiky synths. It's a schizophrenic remix, to be sure, but it continues a thrilling streak of releases from the Toronto-based electro-punk duo. The CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival descends upon the fair city of New York October 21-25, bringing heatseekers and hypemakers together to see some bands, split a few cab fares, and maybe-- just maybe -- be the first to discover the next big thing. The initial lineup for the musical portion of CMJ 2008 has been announced, and, well, if music's next great success story is among 'em, you and me are probably already familiar with the first chapter. Leading this year's charge are Broken Social Scene, Deerhoof, Beach House, Gang Gang Dance, They Might Be Giants, Lee "Scratch" Perry, the Cool Kids, Roisin Murphy, Lykke Li, Crystal Castles, Yo Majesty, Juliana Hatfield, A Place to Bury Strangers, Annuals, Margot and the Nuclear So and So's, Minus the Bear, IRAN, the Dears, Cut Off Your Hands, the Virgins, and more. In other words, that mixtape you made for ceramics class back in March = totes ahead of the curve. As usual, there will also be panels aplenty, film screenings, and more. ... I thought I'd give Crystal Castles a chance as I was seeing their name all over the place, so new single 'Vanished' was the perfect grounding zone for a peek at their work. The band is made up of Canadian duo Ethan and Alice and this single is taken from their 'critically lauded' debut album. It's been branded as the missing link between the Clash and Kraftwerk, a bridge between the riot of punk and the precision of electronics. I think it's borderline chill-out at times, the melodic futurist beats combined with a crisp vocal perhaps make it slightly more mainstream pushed than the direction it could be trying to take. It's not really as long as it could be either, the electro noise is effortless and could last at least double the amount of length as I view Crystal Castles as more of a background noise than tracks I'd intentionally put on to listen to. It feels it should be more 'under the table' than it is; though maybe that's a good thing for exposure and success. Not really my cup of tea, not as strong or bitter as I'd like it. We gather many Crystal Castles fans must be feeling like Willy Wonka suddenly decided to scrap the tour of his factory because he wanted to watch Dallas instead. The reason? Cancelled tour dates. With the exception of the Electric Ballroom show in London on the 18th of September all of the shows featuring the duo have been cancelled. ... Source: twitter.com --- 29 days ago
