Rich media on the internet could be getting another big win if the NBA decides to go through with its plan to stream games to people in local markets. The NBA isn't the first sports league to stream live games, MLB offers a streaming package and the NFL is going to stream some of their national games that are slated for NBC, but this is the first time that local games would be streamed. Traditionally local games are the Crown Jewels of local television stations because they've basically got a monopoly. Let's take the wayback machine to 1992. The Democratic candidate proposes to Put People First ( on sale now for 55 cents ). Even if you don't watch either iteration of the show, you've probably got the basic premise down. In most episodes, one of the Rangers has a problem; a monster shows up to take advantage of that problem; the Rangers fight the monster; one of the sides retreats; there's a renewed focus on the Ranger's problem; there's another monster; the monster grows (leading to a Megazord battle); the monster is defeated; and the Ranger's problem is solved right before the credits. There were no rules against the trainer entering her horse, Marlang, into the Breeders' Stakes, the third jewel of the Canadian horse racing Triple Crown. Still, she felt the need to say sorry. It is just that, without the winners of the first two Jewels competing, she did not think there was a good reason to keep Marlang out of the race. "I think they were nice horses. I do. Obviously [third-place finisher] Solitaire is a very nice horse," England said. "They were a whole different bunch, right? And Marlang was doing well." Judging by the result, there was certainly no need to apologize. The 9-to-1 Marlang, with the fourth-best odds heading into the race, pulled off a stunning wire-to-wire victory in the $500,000 race, held on Sunday on the E.P. Taylor turf course at Woodbine Racetrack. And as much as the win was about the brilliant mile-and-a-half performance Marlang pulled off, it was as much about the horses that were not there. The race lost some of its lustre when the winners of the first two Jewels of the Triple Crown did not enter the contest. For the best part of a year now I've heard buy-siders talk about how there are great opportunities in the debt markets if you know what you're doing. I've generally assumed that these people have lost money on most of those "great opportunities" so far, and that a lot of their rhetoric was just what any fund manager says when markets go down. But distressed-debt hedge fund GSO, recently acquired by Blackstone, has actually exited a couple of its distressed positions already, with healthy profits : In its largest deal, it bought debt in Alltel at the same hefty discount and will be paid off at 100 cents on the dollar, as the telecommuncations company's owners - Goldman Sachs and TPG - sold it to Verizon two months later. Another big payday came when GSO bought debt of Tribune, a troubled newspaper company, Tribune at 66 cents on the dollar, watched it rise to 75 cents when Tribune sold Newsday, one of its Crown Jewels, and quickly sold out. Very nice: I sure wouldn't want to be owning Tribune debt right now. There's a vague idea out there that distressed debt investing is essentially a buy-and-hold practice: you hope that the firm won't go bankrupt and will repay you in full, but if it does go bankrupt then you litigate aggressively in bankruptcy court. GSO, it seems, is also very good at distressed-debt trading : buying low and selling high before the debt starts falling again. That skill is likely to serve them very well in today ...
