David Cronenberg is one of my favorite filmmakers and his last two picutres (A History of Violence and Eastern Promises) were fantastic. But they weren’t very “Cronenbergian.” Makes little sense, I know, and while they did contain elements consistent with all of his work (manipulation of the body, unexpected violence, Howard Shore’s music) they were a little. . .normal. I mean - my Mom, while pushing her own envelope, sure, saw both of those movies. Where’s the David Cronenberg who gives us placenta eating moments in The Brood? Where’s the David Cronenberg of leg-gash love-making in Crash? Where’s the sex-zombie blood slugs of Shivers? Where are the exploding telekinetic heads of Scanners? They probably won’t be in his next movie, either. Variety announced that Cronenberg is in talks to direct Denzel Washington in an adaptation of a Robert Ludlum spy novel called The Matarese Circle. The project has merit - the screenwriters behind the awesome 3:10 To Yuma adapting this cold war era tale. . . but . . . .well . . . .will there be any home-brew demonic gynecological instruments in it? David Cronenberg's crossover into the mainstream is almost complete. The indie stalwart, who got back on the Hollywood radar after modest successes with A History of Violence and Eastern Promises , is in negotiations to direct Denzel Washington in an adaptation of Robert Ludlum's The Matarese Circle . Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, the "masterminds" behind this summer's Wanted, are writing the script. The Matarese Circle takes place during the Cold War, and deals with the partnership of two rival agents-an American and a Soviet-who fight to save the world from mass destruction. You know, typical spy stuff. Ya habíamos comunicado que los guionistas Michael Brandt y Derek Haas habían vendido su proyecto ‘The Matarese Circle’ a MGM, con idea de que lo protagonizase Denzel Washington . La productora le ha ofrecido este thriller de alto presupuesto ambientado durante la guerra fría a David Cronenberg y el canadiense ha dicho “sí, quiero”. Al igual que los films sobre Jason Bourne, ‘The Matarese Circle’ está basada en una novela de Robert Ludlum (a la izquierda de la fotografía), ‘El círculo Matarese’ . Trata sobre un agente norteamericano (Washington) que se debe unir a su contrincante soviético para desmontar un siniestro plan que trata de desbancar los gobiernos del mundo. Después de lo brillante que le quedó ‘Promesas del Este’ (‘Eastern Promises’) , me parece una gran noticia que Cronenberg se embarque en otro thriller, siempre que le dejen amoldarlo a su estilo y darle ese toque tan personal que tiene. Y, viendo que interpretó tan bien esa nacionalidad, ojalá Cronenberg vuelva a contar con Viggo Mortensen para el papel del soviético. El rodaje comenzará la próxima primavera.
