In advance of his Thursday address in Berlin, Obama chats with reporters on the plane, Carrie Budoff Brown reports: Asked if he expected a million screaming Germans, as some of predicted, Obama said: "I doubt we are going to have a million screaming Germans. Let's tamp down expectations." He continued: "I did not realize - my staff just told me the space is bigger" than he'd first realized, he told the press, who asked if that was a bad thing. "It is a potentially bad thing," he said to laughs. "We are sort of on the high wire. I was like, 'I'm sorry, how many does this accommodate?'" ALSO, more praise for Crocker and Petraeus. On Ambassador Crocker: "A real unsung hero in this whole process. Incredibly savvy, but humble and self effacing." Petraeus: "An extraordinarily capable person." ...

This year's S.S. Crocker Memorial Race will take place on Saturday, July 19, 2008. The event is a fun-filled, family sailboat race and is open to any and all sailboats. There are eight different classes and awards are given for first, second, and third in each class. After the race, skippers and crew are invited to attend the party at the Manchester Yacht Club, where chowder will be served from Brenden Crocker's Wild Horse Cafe. The race is sponsored jointly by the Manchester Yacht Club and the Manchester Harbor Boat Club. Each year the Crocker Race is dedicated not only to the memory of S.S. Crocker, but also to the boats he designed. This year's featured boat is Metacomet, built in 1952-53 for Russell Grinnell, Jr. of Gloucester and built by Sturgis Crocker. Metacomet was the biggest boat built at Crocker's Boat Yard. The owner provided a set of lines to Sturgis' father, S. S. (Sam) Crocker, which showed the kind of boat he had in mind. Sam faired up the lines, figured weights and other dimensions, then drew the construction profile and other detailed drawings. "Russ and I scouted the junk yards around Everett and Chelsea, where we found some beautiful hard pine planks, 21 inches by 12 inches by 20 to 24 feet, that had come out of buildings torn down to make way for the Southeast Expressway in Boston,” explained Crocker. “[Route] 128 was also being pushed through Manchester, and we walked the area to see the oak and pine that was to ...

As with many school boards and city councils in Pulaski County, residents of Crocker tend to elect local businesspeople to their school board and prefer to give their tax dollars to local businesses. However, that created a problem Tuesday night when Crocker R-II School Board member Don Mayhew objected to a payment presented by Superintendent Jim Bogle to Goodrich Gas because fellow board member Rob Goodrich is part of the family that owns Goodrich Gas. “Point of clarification: if we paid this, would this be a violation of our nepotism rule?” Mayhew asked. Bogle said it’s not a problem but couldn’t give specifics of why it’s not a problem when pressed by Mayhew. “Don, I can’t answer that, I just know it’s not,” Bogle said. “Rob’s not going to get into trouble. We went though this last year with (the Missouri School Boards Association).” An added factor, Bogle said, is that Rob Goodrich isn’t the sole owner of Goodrich Gas. Mayhew pressed his point, argued that the board needed to avoid even an appearance of impropriety, and said he wanted clarification on why the district’s nepotism rule doesn’t apply. “I can’t speak for you, Rob, but that is the way I would take it; I think this is a violation unless you own less than 10 percent of the company or less than $10,000,” Mayhew said. According to a copy of the official Crocker school policy on nepotism provided by Mayhew, board policy prevents school board members who are more than ...

As president of the Crocker R-II School Board, Charles Worstell has told board members for months that he’s worried the city of Crocker won’t get its sidewalks fixed in time for students who live in Crocker to walk to their school when classes begin on Aug. 18. At Tuesday night’s school board meeting, Worstell said the problem has gone on long enough. “Here we are just a couple of weeks out and we still don’t have a sidewalk,” Worstell said. “(Alderman) Jim Patton acted like it was going to be gotten on right away, but it hasn’t happened.” Worstell asked school board member Jeff Curry, who is also a city council member, what’s happening. “The only story we’ve gotten is there’s been too much rain and it would just collapse if they tried to dig, but now that it’s dried out, there’s nobody available to work,” Curry said. Worstell said he’s asked Mayor Jim Morgan, a retired Crocker High School history teacher, what Crocker students should do. Worstell said Morgan told him that students could be re-routed onto a series of back routes behind Long Funeral Home to reach the school. “I have a problem with telling kids to walk the back roads; they’re not going to do it,” Worstell said. While Worstell said walking on the heavily travelled roadway of Route 17 isn’t safe, board member Dawn Kubinski said the alternative of back routes may not be, either. “As a parent, I wouldn’t want my kids walking there,” Kubinski said. Board member Don Mayh ...

Publicity following a July 5 rollover wreck in downtown Crocker may have helped solve the incident, according to Crocker Police Chief Robert Ishmael. The crash totaled a 1990 Toyota Camry owned by a Crocker woman and injured two men in the car who said they were passengers in the car, not driving it. When emergency personnel arrived, both occupants were out of the vehicle and “highly intoxicated,” Ishmael said following the crash, and they claimed an unknown white male driver wearing a white T-shirt driver fled the scene after the crash. The crash didn’t injure anybody else, but sent the car flying through the air before crashing. Ishmael said the car was northbound on Commercial Street, ran off the right side of the roadway onto the shoulder, travelled 50.9 feet, struck a culvert, continued travelling northbound in the ditch for 23 feet, struck a concrete walkway, and then went airborne for 15 feet before striking the ground where it flipped over onto its side and then rolled onto its roof. Ishmael requested help from the public to identify the driver of the car, and that request paid off. On Monday evening, Ishmael said he’s asked Prosecuting Attorney Deborah Hooper to file traffic charges and charges of filing a false report against both occupants of the car. “After reading the article in the Daily Guide, we had multiple people call with information and I do appreciate the assistance of the citizens of Crocker,” Ishmael said. ...
