A lone gunslinger rides into Town, ties his horse to the hitching post, and strides down the middle of Main Street. Two rival gangs come flooding out of their respective hideouts: the White Gang on one end of the street, the Reds on the other. There's a buried treasure hidden somewhere nearby, and everyone's Crazy to find it, so the lone gunman stands between the two gangs and makes them an offer. [ more ... ] ...

SAN ANTONIO — The year was 1926. Calvin Coolidge was president, flappers were still going Crazy over the Charleston and television was in its infancy. In the dusty Mexican Town of Jalpa, Zacatecas, a man named Francisco Garcia tied the knot with a lovely young woman named Paulina Calvillo, a connection that would withstand the test of time and the winds of fate. ...

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota -- Good Wednesday morning. Lobbying and lobbyists are alive and well at both conventions this year, with folks openly discussing to whom they wrote big checks. Watch this space for more on that later. Here's what else the Twin Cities and Washington are watching today: -- Fred Thompson, Joe Lieberman and President Bush did their best to get the focus back on John McCain during the (kind of) first day of the Republican convention, which wrapped up about ten hours from publication time. Bush's address, via satellite from the White House, was "mercifully short," says one Republican insider, echoing the sentiments of many. And while there would have been an open revolt had Lieberman been added to the ticket, giving him a prime speaking slot from which to bash Obama as inexperienced worked plenty well. -- But a day into the convention, more people are talking about Sarah Palin -- and, for that matter, Levi Johnston -- than they are about McCain. Palin is set to accept the Republican nomination for vice president tonight, barring some Crazy and unforeseen change of plans in the next twelve hours, and she remains the talk of the Town. That's still a good thing, though; Palin has done what other candidates and John McCain couldn't do: Excite the GOP base. -- Democrats aren't going to let Palin make it to the weekend, much less to November, without adding their own two cents on her public image. Politico's Ben Smith go ...

Sarah Palin! Do you know anything about her? Neither does John McCain! But now we must learn, because we will be hearing a lot of Crazy things about her over the next month (unless she drops out ). Which of these things are true? Which are false? WHO'S THE FATHER? We will tell you the TRUE things, below, and then we will speculate wildly as to the Crazy conspiracy nonsense. It will be fun. It's All True! "Book burner." Not literally. Though as mayor of the tiny, presumably quirky little Alaska Town of Wasilla, Palin did inject a bit of old-fashioned culture war politics into the local library. From Time , via Kos: "'She asked the library how she could go about banning books,' he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. 'The librarian was aghast.'" Hah. So much for the "sexy librarian" thing, right? She has a Crazy preacher! Once again, sort of. Though this one is less likely to be relevant to anything, because it's a Crazy right-wing white preacher, and we are quite used to seeing them on TV and not even bothering to be shocked by them anymore. Anyway. Sarah spoke before her old church in Wasilla a couple months ago. She grew up and was baptized there. The senior pastor there since 1999 is, obv, a Crazy right-wing evangelical nutcase named Ed Kalnins. He once said Kerry voters will go to hell, and people who criticize the president will go to hell, and Iraq and 9/11 were wars of faith and other fa ...

We are rarely, these days, surprised by much. Especially the behavior of the national political press. We devoted a couple paragraphs yesterday to predicting their reaction to Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's speech before the Republican National Convention last night, but this morning we are having a genuine Crazy pills moment. Are we trapped in Peggy Noonan's bubble? Seriously, people? The speech blew you away? It was a generic stump speech with a couple killer lines, delivered competently. It was the Republican equivalent of John Kerry's speech at the DNC, just given by someone America doesn't hate (yet) while the national networks were listening. We honestly can't believe the same media that knew full well that they were playing into the expectations game became so convinced that Governor Palin would massively fuck up that the fact that she was perky and pleasant and funny—the fucking reasons she was selected —was some revelation, or the birth of a new political superstar. We can't believe everyone gave her a pass on the 'bridge to nowhere' bullshit. We can't believe people keep calling her a "reformer" and "maverick" even though as a politician, completely outside her self-constructed narrative, she introduced focus-grouped wedge politics to small-Town Alaska and lobbied for the most corrupt politicians in America. Is it really this easy? We know this miserable woman. We are from the great white north, the land of Ms. Palin's con ...

I have a hard time finding some good places to go out in Hong Kong. Lang Kwai Fung reminds me of the worst small-Town disco area and other more nice places and restaurants also turn into something awfull in my opnion after 10 pm. Like many of you, I have one hell of a time finding jeans. It seems like it shouldn't be so difficult -- there are a million different styles, and all I need is ONE PAIR. But, I have a few, uh, let's say quirks that make shopping tough: I have some big, "athletic" thighs -- sure, I can do a million lunges with them or run all over Town, but they don't fit in many jeans; I sold high end jeans for a while, and got ridiculously spoiled by not only having a major discount, but also getting to try on every single style that came out with no pressure -- and so, of course, I was able to find plenty of jeans I loved; I'm just that perfect height for which regular lengths are often a bit short to wear with flats, but with long lengths, I need a small heel; I don't like a lot of "stuff" -- I don't want rips and tears or Crazy embellishments on my butt -- just jeans, please; Did I mention the thighs ? I have one pair that I really like, but they're too long to wear with flats, which is a problem because I have a trip to NYC coming up (actually, I'm there now, as you're reading this, probably shopping or eating or both), and there's no way I'm walking around in heels. At least, not during the day. So I was in dire need of a pair of hip jeans that could be worn with flats. Along comes TJ Maxx to save the day.   TJ Maxx provided me with a $50 gift card to solve my fashion crisis, which thrilled me to no end because I love that place. But, I hadn ...

Akira Kurosawa's 1954 classic The Seven Samurai is undoubtedly the greatest samurai film ever made, so the news that The Weinstein Company was planning a remake was not exactly well-received by fans. But John Fusco , who was hired to script the updated version, told Geeks of Doom that his story is not a remake, but rather a re-imagining. "I would never be Crazy enough to attempt to write a remake of one of the greatest films of all time," Fusco said in a recent interview with Geeks of Doom while promoting the upcoming DVD release for The Forbidden Kingdom . "It is simply a re-imagining." Kurosawa's original film took place in feudal Japan, where a group of seven masterless samurai warriors are hired by a village of poor farmers to protect them from maraudering bandits. In 1960, director John Sturges remade the film into a Western set in Mexico called The Magnificent Seven which replaced the samurai with hired U.S. gunmen. Fusco's re-imagining will also nix the samurai in favor of a modern-day tale of Blackwater-like paramilitary contractors defending a Northern Thailand Town from an imminent attack... ...

Based on excerpts released by the campaign, Marc Ambinder thinks Sarah Palin's speech tonight will be much like the stump speech she's been givin g. Although she will say, "I guess a small-Town mayor is sort of like a 'community organizer,' except that you have actual responsibilities. " In his speech tonight, Mitt Romney will take a shot at Michelle Obama , which the Obama campaign has already called "pathetic." The A.P. reviews how John McCain has articulated Palin's qualifications , including "Alaska is right next to Russia" and "It helps to be mayor." Cindy McCain is not as far to the right as Palin on abortion. Not realizing she was on a live mic, Peggy Noonan called McCain's choice of Palin "political bullshit. " Jamie Lynn Spears to Bristol Palin: " Hang in there! XXOO ." An Alaskan blogger describes the Alaska Independence Party, of which Sarah Palin's husband was a member, as " the craziest uncle in a family of Crazy uncles. " The St. Paul City Council wants the police department to explain what's happened with protesters during the convention. Alex Balk nicknames McCain's new anti-Obama ad "Let's Try To Distract People From The Fact That My Risky, Under-researched Choice Of A Running Mate Has Been A Complete Disaster, God Knows Which One Of Her Kids Is Gonna Catch Pregnant Next." Nate Silver points out that Alaskans directly benefit financially from oil and gas production in their state. The D.N.C. is distributing a phot ...

In what ways has this trip to Kansas City been different than your May visit? I was amidst a competition and really, weird as it is to say this, the whole day was revolving around me being a competitor on the show. I think what’s different about being here now is that it’s about us, the 10 of us and really getting out and saying thank you. The fact that it’s my hometown is extra. I’m anxious not for everybody to see my set; I’m anxious for everybody to see everyone else’s set. What have been some highlights from your time in Kansas City this go-round? Well, let’s see. We got into Town about 6 this morning, and I woke up for my 9:30 a.m. call. So, it was a little rushed this morning, but I got a chance to go to the Ford plant and see my new car, which was nice. Then I went out to Blue Springs and saw the unveiling of the mural. And it was beautiful. I thought the students and the faculty and everyone involved with it did an amazing job. It was an extremely humbling experience to head home and have something of that magnitude. You know, there’s a lot of hours put into that I’m sure. To see that on the side of a building in your hometown was a pretty intense moment. I had to turn my back to the audience for a minute to keep from weeping. How will your new album, set for release in November, be different from anything you’ve done before? June was Crazy. We were doing a lot of tour rehearsals and on top of that I co-wrote like 20 songs ...

The new City of Ember poster is out and I can't help but wonder if those two Crazy kids ever bumped into Fraser and company from Journey To The Center Of The Earth on their subterranean journey? Also, I did not know the little girl could walk on air. The full poster image is below. When are they going to start pimping Bill Murray (who plays the futuristic underground Town's mayor) in this movie's promotion? That's the poster I want to see. City of Ember follows a couple of crafty kids who have to uncover the mysteries of their ancient ancestors to find a way out of their underground city before the power runs about and the whole Town is plunged into darkness. Based off the young adult scifi novel, Ember opens October 10. ...

Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany are cast as married couple in Jon Amiel's biopic Creation about the life of Charles Darwin. Bettany will won't be donning much of the evolutionary theorist's mighty beard, because this picture promises to show us the life of a young Darwin, and his struggles. THR claims, "The scientist finds himself caught in a struggle between faith and reason, love and truth." I'm all for anything that shows "Crazy" Darwin hot rodding around Town smoking cigarettes and chasing skirts. But what kind of man was he in his youth, was he a Spicoli, a Bueller or a Dean, and can he out do the Kinsey movie? [ The Hollywood Reporter ] ...
