Russ visits with Craigslist founder and customer service rep Craig Newmark. Newmark started Craigslist as an email list for friends. Today, it’s a major online community, “a platform to help you get everyday things done,” getting 12 billion page views and 40 million unique visitors each month. Newmark is involved in his community and wants other people to be involved too—vote, express an opinion, volunteer. Can a “nice guy nerd” be successful with a company founded to help people? ...

Craigslist is arguably the number one real estate site with real estate-oriented page views in the “low billions per month.” So it makes sense to have founder Craig Newmark address the first day of the Inman Real Estate Conference in San Francisco. Newmark never reveals very much about the service, humbly referring to himself as just [...] ...

Craig Newmark spoke at TIECON a while ago. It was more like one on one discussion. Craig does come accross as a complete geek (I am a geek too so nothing’s wrong with it and it was a funny interview He did share some of his pictures when he used wear taped glasses and even today he likes to call himself customer service representative of Craigslist. I was impressed by his humble demeanor, and just in general the way of looking at things. In the world driven by corporate culture and profit driven wall street, it was great to see someone standing tall and promoting free site. FYI- everything on Craigslist is free except job posts in selected cities. Part of the interview can be viewed here . ...

New York Times publisher and genial buffoon Arthur "Pinch" Sulzberger is not worried about how his newspaper's circulation sucks and the share price is at a historic low. You know why? Because Craig Newmark, the guy who invented Cragslist and destroyed the newspaper revenue stream, just got a Times subscription! So hey, no worries, Times staffers. If there's one thing Pinch has learned since he took over as publisher 16 years ago, it's to always mention the moose in the room. But not to bring an actual moose with him anymore. The "moose in the room" is one of those unbearably stupid management book stories, in which a moose ends up at a dinner party or something and no one at the table has the nerves to ask why the moose is there. See, the moose represents big problems that no one wants to talk about. So you are always supposed to mention the moose in the room. Get it? The whole thing is asinine. Of course, Sulzberger is big into management fads and business book bullshit (as we said, buffoon). And back when the Jayson Blair scandal was rocking the Times newsroom, he did this (per Seth Mnookin's Hard News ): Now, though, he thinks that was maybe a mistake. In an infamous incident, Mr. Sulzberger showed up at a company crisis meeting holding a toy stuffed moose. It was a gimmick meant to symbolize things that people were afraid to say, but nobody was in the mood for goofy shtick. He wouldn't repeat it. "Obviously not," he said. "T ...

Brian Solis, via Flickr (CC license) Could Craiglist founder Craig Newmark end up helping to save journalism? Last Friday on Reinventing Classifieds former Tidbits editor Steve Outing posted an open letter to the founders of Craigslist . In a nutshell, Outing: Congratulated Craigslist on their continued success. Reminded founders Craig Newmark and Jim Buckmaster that Craigslist has "played a role in the downturn of the newspaper industry." Observed that Newmark has often publicly "expressed concern about newspapers' plight as it affects watchdog journalism." Requested that Craigslist take active measures to help save news organizations. (That is, he's asking that they help save journalism -- not necessarily news papers .) Suggested four ways that Craigslist might achieve these goals. So far, Outing hasn't yet received a substantive response from Newmark or Buckmaster. NYU journalism professor Jay Rosen asked Newmark via Twitter whether he planned to respond. If we were talking about nearly any other online media company, I'd say Outing was wasting his energy. However, Newmark has consistently voiced considerable respect and support for traditional journalism. Even more, he's paid substantial money from Craigslist's own pocket to support it. I think that opening this dialogue is entirely appropriate, and I applaud Outing for initiating it. I hope the Craiglsit founders respond, and that they keep talking. Here are Outing's ideas for ho ...

I just finished reading an intriguing open letter from Steve Outing. The letter was addressed to Craig Newmark, who is the founder of Craigslist . Outing suggest that Craigslist considers four things that could help save Newspapers. Although he attributes the downturn of the newspaper industy on Craigslist, he also considers Craig Newmark a compassionate member of society. Here are his thoughts: Allow local newspapers to scrape Craigslist ads Allow consumers to place ads on Craigslist via newspaper websites Add links on Craigslist to newspaper website classified sections Add a news component to Craigslist Let’s break these four ... ...

Filed under: Computers Craigslist is probably the best resource for finding local people who do things that you need taken care of, whether they be mowing lawns, hauling away old appliances, or watching your kids (if you're brave). According to a report in London's Telegraph, the latest types of ads to show up on the site are giving a whole new angle "taking care of" things, with Mexican hitmen advertising their services on the site . The purported professional killers are offering their services for as little as $6,000, and are pledging traditional service agreements like "job guaranteed in 10 days or less" and "I am 100 per cent professional and don't charge in advance." With offers like that, you seemingly can't go wrong -- except that you're committing a horrible deed and setting yourself up for a potentially long time in jail. Given this is Mexico, though, you may not have to worry about that last issue. The Mexican police system is overwhelmed with drug-related crimes and has little time to investigate the estimated 1,000 - 1,700 murders that will occur in Mexico this year. We're guessing that's a market Craig Newmark didn't have in mind when he founded the site. [Source: The Telegraph ] Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Comments ...
