Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt’s line-item veto of $500,000 to help renovate the historic Jackson County Courthouse on the Independence Square drew a sharp response today from an Independence legislator. “I’m just extremely disappointed that the governor wouldn’t allow these funds for this needed project,” state Rep. Paul LeVota, D-Independence, said today. LeVota said the governor’s decision caught him by surprise, as the appropriation had both Republican and Democratic support in the General Assembly. “It’s a little baffling that the governor didn’t support it,” LeVota said. The $500,000 from the state was to have been part of a nearly $10 million renovation including federal, local and private money to renovate the building that housed Harry Truman’s office when he was a Jackson County judge. Local leaders see the renovation as a key to local tourism. LeVota, the Democratic floor leader in the Missouri House, said legislators would probably try to override the Republican governor’s veto during their veto session later this year – but he said that faces long odds. More realistically, he said, legislators will have to start from scratch in in the 2009 session. ...

Watch out Entertainment Tonight’s Mary Hart, here comes Stephanie Stricklen. As first reported here, KGW has announced it’s launching a new show called “The Square Live at 7pm.” According to KGW President and General Manager DJ Wilson the show will broadcast from KGW’s new HD Studio at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Produced by KGW’s news department, Wilson says don’t expect it to look anything like the Cheryl Hansen hosted 1970’s and 80’s PM Magazine, or other more product placement-driven local shows. “It will be very cool, hip and interesting,” Wilson told Willamette Week. She also expects the Square-based show to interact with both it’s TV and live viewers. “It’s going to be different from anything else on television.” Stricklen, who for the last couple of weeks has been broadcasting from the Bejing Olympics, will be relieved of her wee-hour duties of anchoring weekday mornings from 4:30 to 5 a.m. Sassy, adorable—and human enough to show real emotion—it’s a smart move for Stricklen (and KGW). The new show is scheduled to launch the day after Thanksgiving. ...
