A couple weeks ago we noted the mash note the Times' media columnist typed up for Couric. It was about how she seemed to be rebounding during the presidential campaign; how she had her swagger back. We thought it was odd to so lavishly toast an anchor who, despite her $15 million pay day, was still languishing in last place in the ratings. Talk about setting a low bar for success. Well, on Saturday, the Times returned for another Couric mash note. It's about how  she seems to be rebounding during the presidential campaign; she has her swagger back. (Thanks to Palin-related YouTube clips.) We still think it's odd to so lavishly toast an anchor who, despite her $15 million pay, is still languishing in last place in the ratings. Talk about setting a low bar for success. ...

TMZ.com has posted video of a friendly impromptu interview with Katie Couric on the streets of New York, where Couric suggested her interview with Sarah Palin was really fair and that Palin had lied like everyone else when she says she reads the British news mag The Economist. The TMZ man asked Couric how she felt about Palin complaining about her: "I feel we did a really fair job and gave her a lot of opportunities." He then asked "What magazines and newspapers do you read?" Couric gave a political answer: "All of them and any of them." The interviewer said: "Can you name one?" She kept smiling and said, "Of course, everyone lies about The Economist, but I actually read it. And I read a lot of magazines and newspapers. Luckily, I’m not running for vice president." That's either a slap at Palin, or Katie trying to suggest humbly that she would be a terrible veep nominee. Why would Couric try to be a number two, when she's so consistently been number three out of three in the ratings? The "what do you read" question to Palin was designed as a "gotcha" question to underline Palin's lack of worldly sophistication (hence the jokes about Palin lying about reading The Economist.) Think of the pitfalls of the various answers. Say you read the New York Times and the Washington Post, and you disappoint the base. Say you read the Washington Times and watch Fox News, and the media treats you like a right-wing leper. Say you read the Anchorag ...

Tina Fey isn’t the only UVA alumna poking fun at Sarah Palin . A week after the Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential nominee told Katie Couric that of America’s newspapers she reads, “all of them, any of them,” a paparazzo from celebrity gossip site TMZ.com approached Couric on the street in New York and asked the CBS Evening News anchor the same question. Couric flashed her trademark pearly whites before answering , “All of them and any of them.” Finally Couric did offer that, “Everyone lies about The Economist , but I actually read it. And I read a lot of magazines and newspapers, but luckily I’m not running for vice president.” ...

Video: Notebook: Campaign Turns UglyWith less than a month left, this presidential campaign has taken a decidedly ugly turn. At Republican rallies, some over heated supporters have started to yell things like "terrorist" and "treason" when Barack Obama's name is mentioned. This is depressing and unacceptable. Freedom of speech is one of our most cherished rights, but words that incite violence should be seriously condemned by all the candidates. It's no surprise that "civil discourse" is such an oxymoron these days. When I sometimes peruse comments on the Internet, they are loaded with vitriol and profanity. I'm embarrassed for the authors of those comments, and for the readers who stumble upon them. Words are like weapons - they can damage who we are. This is an important time to remind ourselves that even when passions are high, we can agree to disagree. And we can do so with reason - and respect. ...

I just saw this, and it kind of blew my mind: Palin also commented Friday on her widely-panned series of interviews with Katie Couric, telling Fox interviewer she did not think the CBS News anchor asked enough issue-based questions. Is that the same interview we’ve been seeing clips of? Because, I’m sorry, Governor Palin, but the problem [...] ...

The only thing more unbearable than Sarah Palin's non-responses to Katie's questions is her speaking voice. Ye gods, she really speaks like that? All screechy and droppin' Gs left and right. Every time she said "tawkin'", I cringed. Check out Katie's face during the interview...she's so badass here. I love it. Here's Part II. If you want to really cringe, skip ahead to 3:39 where Palin starts tawkin' about Russia. Oh man, I can't wait to see the VP Debate. Biden just released an 8-page document partially listing all of the foreign leaders he's met with , and Palin? Well, bless her heart, she just got her first passport last year. Poor thing, she can barely manage to put together a coherent sentence in English half the time, and the rest of the time, not at all. She's WORSE than Bush as far as just blurting out nonsense, if that's even possible. Yep, this debate is going to be good. If she shows up, that is. Here are the transcripts of both parts of the interview. They read even worse than they sound. (CBS) When CBS News anchor Katie Couric sat down for an exclusive interview with vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin Wednesday, she focused on the economy - but also addressed reports that the lobbying firm of Sen. John McCain's campaign manager received payments from the controversial mortgage giant Freddie Mac until last month. Couric asked for her reaction to that. Sarah Palin: My understanding is that Rick Davis recused himself from ...
