Is this Labour Coup really on? The sense at this point, Sunday afternoon, is that the backbench Plotters are running out of road quite fast. They need a heavyweight intervention quickly or their plot is going nowhere. At this stage the cabinet seems incapable of acting – witness poor John Hutton looking terrified on the Andrew Marr show earlier today and David Miliband having his Portillo moment... ...

The Coup was aimed at toppling President Franklin D Roosevelt with the help of half-a-million war veterans. The Plotters, who were alleged to involve some of the most famous families in America, (owners of Heinz, Birds Eye, Goodtea, Maxwell Hse & George Bush’s Grandfather, Prescott) believed that their country should adopt the policies of Hitler and Mussolini to beat the great depression. Mike Thomson investigates why so little is known about this biggest ever peacetime threat to American democracy. Turkish police have arrested 20 people, ending a yearlong investigation into a group called Ergenekon, which local media describes as an ultra nationalist group planning bombings that would trigger a military takeover. Among the suspects are two former military commanders, a journalist from a pro-secular newspaper and the chairman of the Ankara chamber of Commerce. The arrests came at critical time in Turkish politics as the Turkish Constitutional Court convened earlier this week to sta... ...

Guy Aitchison (London, OK ): Jon Cruddas - the star of this year's conference according to Jackie Ashley - writes in his Coffehouse diary that Brown's speech "nailed it", in part because he was more "emotionally literate" this time round. Cruddas reckons the space for the Coup Plotters has been shut down and anticipates a "mass defection of Labour’s Taliban to the Tories next week". Brown's "this is no time for a novice" line will of course be the one most people remember. Double rewarding, as Iain Dale notes , because it can be interpreted to apply to both Miliband and Cameron. And following Ruth Kelly's resignation, which has somewhat overshadowed the reaction to Brown's speech, might it not apply to her as well? The line that really stuck out for pro-Brown blogger Paul Linford though was "United we are a great movement". This, he hopes, signals a return to the idealism of the pre-Blair Labour party when the phrase "This Great Movement of Ours" was widely used by its leaders.   Read the rest of this post... read more ...

A military Coup proponent has finally lost the game. I'm talking about Pakistani Coup-lover President Pervez Musharraf. He resigned. Musharraf said in a speech, "Whatever I did, I did it for my country." He may be right. Our own Coup stagers and Ergenekon members -- in other words, Coup Plotters -- say the same. It may look awkward to resign from a position one invaded with the help of guns, but Coup lovers need to derive lessons from the fact that Musharraf was "obliged to resign." It is not possible for elections -- a democratic mechanism that bases the right to govern directly with the people -- to stand together with any political power that is taken over by despots. Even in its simplest form, the existence of elections renders illegitimate those who come to power without being elected by the people and who take their power from sources other than the will of the people. This is what paved the way for Musharraf's end. Those who trust the will of the people in the end vanquish those who trust weapons. The ones who were unable to correctly evaluate the developments in Pakistan concluded that the "moderate Islam project" had come to an end. We need to evaluate things correctly; it is not the "moderate Islam project" which has come to an end in Pakistan; it is the term in office of a Coup stager. It has finally been understood that a political power which does not derive its legitimacy from the people cannot survive for long in Eastern s ...
