The super-fast deliberations didn't show it, but the attorneys in the just-completed Michael Lock trial put on a great show. There was Assistant District Attorney Mark Williams, the go-to guy on homicide cases, versus Rodney Cubbie, former-state-and-federal-prosecutor-turned-defense-attorney. It was the first time the two have faced off, and they frequently interrupted each other with objections, beating a path over to sidebars with Circuit Judge Jeffrey Wagner. Here are some the highlights: At one point, Cubbie wanted to bring up a witness' drug use, which Williams called "character assassination." Wagner ruled the question was allowable. Williams said, "You can't allow that, judge." Wagner glared at him and said he had ruled. Then there was some sort of noise made by Williams and Wagner summoned the attorneys into his chambers and slammed the door for what sounded like a good tongue-lashing. During cross on Lock, Williams was hammering the defendant on why his was the last call a victim ever received. Cubbie objected. Williams said, "I am not going to argue in front of the jury." Cubbie shot back, in front of the jury, "You do it all the time." At one sidebar, which are supposed to be for lawyers' and the judge's ears only, Cubbie could be clearly heard saying, "I resent that" to Williams. For all the fireworks, Williams got the upper-hand here. It was a tricky case for the state since there was no physical evidence linking L ... Source: www.law.com --- 2 days ago

Selectmen hired a new law firm Wednesday night after the previous town Counsel resigned earlier this month. After a brief interview, the board unanimously agreed to bring on Blatman, Bobrowski and Mead of Boston. Mark Bobrowski, one of the firm's principal attorneys, is a Massachusetts zoning expert who already has been working with the town to update its zoning. Bobrowski told selectmen he's been working for municipalities ever since he passed the bar exam in 1985, and has written zoning for more than 100 communities. But he stressed his firm has more to offer than land use expertise. Attorney Lisa Mead, another principal, will act as lead Counsel for the town. Mead said altogether, the firm has more than 40 years of experience in municipal law as an attorneys and public officials. Ashland's previous Counsel, Urbelis & Fieldsteel, resigned July 1. Attorney Thomas Urbelis declined to comment last week on his firm's reason for ending its relationship with the town, and town officials simply said they would accept the resignation. Selectmen Chairman Paul Monaco on Wednesday night thanked the firm for its services. Urbelis' law office represented the town for about 1 1/2 years after some major changes in law and order in Ashland. Selectmen severed their relationship with then-Town Counsel Dave Thomas in spring 2006, citing "philosophical differences," and put out a call for a new representation. They chose Urbelis' firm from a dozen ... Source: www.swamppolitics.com --- 8 days ago
