Antonio Margarito stopped Miguel Cotto in the 11th round in Las Vegas, blemishing Cotto's unbeaten record and claiming the World Boxing Association's 147-pound welterweight title with one last incredible barrage of punches. Margarito (37-5, 27 KOs), the Mexican star so often ducked by the division's best fighters in recent years, dropped the Puerto Rican champion twice in the 11th after several rounds of relentless pressure at the MGM Grand Garden. Margarito won his third welterweight belt. Cotto (32-1) was attempting his fifth title defense. ... Source: www.bostonherald.com --- 26 days ago

Miguel Cotto probably is still having nightmares about Antonio Margarito. I just got done watching the Margarito-Cotto replay on Saturday night on HBO’s “Boxing After Dark.” It was like watching a horror flick. Cotto was playing the role of helpless teenager or security guard about to be slaughtered. Margarito was playing the role of Mike Myers, Jason Voorhies or [...] ... If you have spent any time walking the loop at area tracks over the past few months you just might have rubbed shoulders with an Olympian without even knowing it. For Hector Cotto, an Olympic qualifier in the 110-meter high hurdles, Waltham has become an important stop along the long road from Puerto Rico, to North Carolina, and now all the way to Beijing. After graduating from East Carolina University last year, Cotto thought his track career might be concluding. He'd been an All-Conference USA hurdler and key member of a vaunted 4x400 team in college, but with money not readily available to continue training, he had just about resigned himself to running only recreationally as he headed to Lynn, Mass. for a real job. He didn't entirely give up the idea of serious training, however, and wound up posting on a track and field Web site that he was searching for a coach and training club in the Boston area. That's when he met up with Carl Valle of Excel Sport & Fitness in Waltham. That's when he took his first big step down the road to Beijing. ``I pretty much thought that things would be winding down just because it's difficult to work full-time and train at the same time,'' he said. ``But then I talked with coach and he was pretty serious about it.'' ``I saw the name and did the obvious thing where I went on the Google and saw if he was legit,'' said Valle, a Waltham resident who coaches athletes in many sports out of the training ... Tonight’s fight is being dubbed matchup of the decade by many. Two of the busiest and toughest fighters in boxing today. The Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry helps a bit too.
