Costume Institute Focuses on American Style Costume Institute Focuses on American Style by Marc Karimzadeh Posted Tuesday September 08, 2009 From WWD Issue 09/08/2009 NEW YORK — In the past decade, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute has traveled to England via “AngloMania”; France with Chanel and Paul Poiret, and pretty much around the globe thanks to superheroes and models. Next spring, it is staying much closer to home with “American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity,” which explores the way fashion between 1890 and 1940 contributed to the evolving identity and perception of American women. Scheduled from May 5 to Aug. 15, the show will mark the first Costume Institute exhibit based on the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection that was transferred to the Met last January. “I was looking through the Brooklyn Museum’s collection, and thinking about developing a concept around the holdings,” said Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute, who is organizing the exhibit with the help of curator in charge Harold Koda. “What I found really compelling around the collection was that there were clothes that to me epitomized these archetypes of American femininity that you have read about in novels and seen in paintings and photographs.” The show, to be located in the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Exhibition Hall on the museum’s second floor, will feature about 75 pieces from designers such as Travis Banton, Callot Soeurs, Elizab ... The creative director of Gap Patrick Robinson - who will be presiding over the fashion event alongside US talk show host Oprah Winfrey - is particularly taken with the event’s theme, ‘American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity’. He explained to GraziaDaily.co.uk : "Gap is honoured to be invited by The Met to participate - supporting art and culture has always been at the heart of the brand. We are excited by the theme as this feels like a really natural fit - hopefully in our 40 years we have done just this by delivering versatile American style. //--> "I love that this exhibition speaks to how the American woman is multi-dimensional - she’s about high fashion and she’s about everyday fashion. Which is why I’m thrilled Oprah is our co-chair for the Gala benefit as she epitomises this versatility and has played such a significant part in shaping everything about today’s woman." Patrick is equally as thrilled with the way Gap’s latest collection has been received. He explained the Pierre Hardy boots, T-shirts with silk pockets and denim gilets are so popular the company has had to start a waiting list. Gap employees can’t get enough of the slim-fitting chinos, boyfriend shirts and pea coats. Patrick added: "Look out for our new take on the classic Gap grey sweatshirt - which I predict will be the essential easy luxe piece for 2010." ... Source: www.papierdoll.net --- 151 days ago

New York – While seeing the face of a celebrity on the cover of a fashion magazine or starring in an advertising campaign for Louis Vuitton is the rule, rather than the exception these days, once upon a time it was the professional model who brought the collections of designers like Christian Dior , Cristobal Balenciaga , Yves Saint Laurent, Halston and Calvin Klein to the public, and to life. hese women, who functioned as the standards of ideal beauty during any given era and in turn, had a hand in shifting that ideal – from the poise and polish of someone like Dovima in the ’50s, to the waifish Twiggy to the rise of black models like Iman and Beverly Johnson in the ’70s – are the focus of a new exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute this spring, “The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion,” which celebrated its opening at the museum in New York Monday night, May 4, with the annual star-studded gala that is one of fashion’s biggest nights.
