The latest round of Copper thefts in the Dover area have taken a dangerous turn as the thief or Thieves have started cutting Copper wire out of live electric poles. The first theft was reported Sept. 10 after four 60-foot sections of wire were taken from the south end of the former Outten Brothers furniture store, 1275 S. DuPont Highway. Lt. Paul Bernat, spokesman for the Dover Police Department, said the estimated value of the theft was $4,061. On the night of Sept. 11, more wire was stolen from St. Andrew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 425 N. DuPont Highway. Bernat said the estimated value of the 10 foot-long pieces was $5,000 with $200 in damage. Hazel Partridge, administrative assistant at the church, said she came in Friday morning to no electricity. After calling the city and checking to make sure it wasn’t part of a grid outage or the circuit breaker, she saw the vandalism on the pole itself. “Someone knew what they were doing,” she said. “You have to know what to do or they’d be laying there dead. “It’s so dangerous, it’s stupid.” The church’s electrician John Smeyda of Thorn Electric Inc. in Smyrna said the pole had 208 volts of electricity when the wire strands combined together, adding that even just one strand of 120 volts will kill a person. Partridge also said the church has parking lights on all night, which meant the Thieves must have been in the light until they cut the lines. ...
