Related Articles Inverse regulatory Coordination of motility and curli-mediated adhesion in Escherichia coli. Genes Dev. 2008 Sep 1;22(17):2434-46 Authors: Pesavento C, Becker G, Sommerfeldt N, Possling A, Tschowri N, Mehlis A, Hengge R During the transition from post-exponential to stationary phase, Escherichia coli changes from the motile-planktonic to the adhesive-sedentary "lifestyle." We demonstrate this transition to be controlled by mutual inhibition of the FlhDC/motility and sigma(S)/adhesion control cascades at two distinct hierarchical levels. At the top level, motility gene expression and the general stress response are inversely coordinated by sigma(70)/sigma(FliA)/sigma(S) competition for core RNA polymerase and the FlhDC-controlled FliZ protein acting as a sigma(S) inhibitor. At a lower level, the signaling molecule bis-(3'-5')-cyclic-diguanosine monophosphate (c-di-GMP) reduces flagellar activity and stimulates transcription of csgD, which encodes an essential activator of adhesive curli fimbriae expression. This c-di-GMP is antagonistically controlled by sigma(S)-regulated GGDEF proteins (mainly YegE) and YhjH, an EAL protein and c-di-GMP phosphodiesterase under FlhDC/FliA control. The switch from motility-based foraging to the general stress response and curli expression requires sigma(S)-modulated down-regulation of expression of the flagellar regulatory cascade as well as proteolysis of the flagellar master regulator ...

Related Articles Hand function in multiple sclerosis: Force Coordination in manipulation tasks. Clin Neurophysiol. 2008 Aug 27; Authors: Krishnan V, Jaric S OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the methodology for exploring the specific aspects of functional impairment in multiple sclerosis (MS) through the pattern of forces exerted in various manipulation tasks. METHODS: Twelve mildly involved MS patients (EDSS 2.5-5.5) and 12 healthy controls performed various static and dynamic manipulation tasks with an instrumented device that recorded the grip (G; normal to the digit device contact area) and load force (L; tangential force that causes lifting). RESULTS: MS patients consistently displayed lower indices of task performance (as assessed by the ability to produce the required L profiles) and force Coordination (as assessed by G/L ratio, coupling of G and L, and G modulation) than the healthy controls across all tested tasks. CONCLUSIONS: The applied methodology could be sensitive enough to detect the hand dysfunction in mildly involved individuals with MS. Particularly recommended for future evaluations of the impairment of hand function could be a simple lifting task and the static task of tracing a gradually changing L, as well as the variables depicting both the task performance and G/L ratio. SIGNIFICANCE: The applied methodology could be developed into a standard clinical test for the assessment of hand function in MS and, possibly, in other ...

Related Articles Inhibitory response capacities of bilateral lower and upper extremities in children with developmental Coordination disorder in endogenous and exogenous orienting modes. Brain Cogn. 2008 Aug 31; Authors: Tsai CL, Yu YK, Chen YJ, Wu SK This study was designed to investigate separately the inhibitory response capacity and the lateralization effect in children with developmental Coordination disorder (DCD) in the endogenous and exogenous modes of orienting attention. Children with DCD on the lower extremities (DCD-LEs), along with age-matched controls, completed four tasks that involved various applications of asynchronous stimuli to the feet or hands at various intervals. The results demonstrated that children with DCD-LEs had a significantly longer reaction time than the controls for all tasks, and were not alert to the appearance of the target. However, they displayed a deficit in volitional shifts of attention (endogenous mode), but not in automatic dislocation of attention (exogenous mode), whenever they performed the tasks with either their lower or their upper-limbs-even 6 months after the initial study. These findings confirm the deficit in the inhibitory response capacity in terms of volitional movement of attention by children with DCD. Additionally, the negative effect of lateralization on the bilateral extremities was not present in children with DCD-LEs. Significantly differences in response ability were dete ...

Abstract   Octahedral iron(II) complexes of a unique pyridine-derived tetrapodal pentadentate polyamine ligand, 2,6-C 5 H 3 N(CMe[CH 2 NH 2 ] 2 ) 2 , show temperature-dependent spin crossover (SCO) depending on the nature of a sixth monodentate ligand L (imidazol or pyridine derivative). For L = 1-methylimidazol, the redox behaviour of the complex, as determined by cyclic voltammetry, suggests an accompanying ligand exchange. Pyridine-4-thiol and the disulphides: 4-(2-methyldisulphanyl)pyridine, 4-(2-hexadecyldisulphanyl)pyridine and 1,2-bis([pyridine-4-yl]methyl)disulphane, were studied as mono-dentate ligands L, with a view to enable chemisorption of iron(II) complexes on a gold surface. In the case of pyridine-4-thiol, the participation of the thiolate functional group in iron Coordination is difficult to suppress, whereas the disulphides enter into yet unrecorded redox chemistry with iron(II), yielding a di-iron(III) complex containing a persulphide bridge ( S 2 2− ).
