A famous face, though few could pick him out of the crowd. Harmon Killebrew, looking tan with sunglasses and golf shirt, blended in with the other 159 golfers who slipped into golf carts on Tuesday morning. Killebrew, a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame since 1984, was at Leatherstocking Golf Course, though, because of his fame. The former power hitting first baseman for the Minnesota Twins is the celebrity host for the 26th annual Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open that began with the pro-am at Cooperstown’s scenic course. The tournament is the top fundraiser to benefit Pathfinder Village of Edmeston, a residential community for children and adults with Down Syndrome. Killebrew, making his second visit to Cooperstown this summer, was happy to return to the tournament as host, even if his appearances get fewer with age. “The older I get, I can’t make them all,” the 72-year-old said. “This time I have a different role. I went out to the village for the first time (Monday). It was a great experience.” The tournament purse is $100,000; first place took home $10,000. A part of the tournament proceeds benefit the Baseball Hall of Fame. Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson said the Hall has been involved with the event for about five years. Killebrew spent the majority of his 22-year playing career with the Twins. He hit .256 with 573 home runs, 1,584 RBIs and a .509 slugging percentage. Who would have thought that the Yankees would ever have a catcher named Pudge? For those who remember the rivalry between Carlton Fisk and Thurman Munson, that would have been blasphemy. Yet, it almost happened in 1984, when the Yankees worked out a multi-player deal that sent Don Baylor to the White Sox for Fisk. With all of the pieces in place, Baylor invoked his no-trade clause, canceling the deal. ... Source: www.wktv.com --- 11 days ago
