Now this is what I'm talking about! After being behind the times, finally a formal press release regarding converged TV/Internet/Phone. Caller ID on TV, E-mail/voicemail indicators on TV/ Caller ID on PC application, etc.. From: http://www.cedmagazine.com/Comcast-converged-services-TV-Internet-phones.aspx Comcast gears up for converged services on TV, Internet, phones By Mike Robuck CedMagazine.com - July 24, 2008 Comcast is gearing up for the deployment next month of caller ID on TVs, with caller ID on PCs slated to follow early next year. A spokesperson for Comcast also confirmed that the company will offer cordless phones either late this summer or in early fall. The cordless phone for the first deployment will be from Thomson, but other vendors will also provide the handsets to Comcast. The cordless phone will allow Comcast customers to access their e-mail, weather, stock tickers and other features while in their homes. As for caller ID on TV, Comcast’s spokesperson declined to say if it’s provisioned through an in-house technology or through a vendor. Comcast is playing catch-up with several cable operators on the caller ID on TV front. Several years ago, Time Warner Cable (TWC) rolled out a caller ID on TV service in its New York division that was developed by the cable company. Since then, the TV caller ID has been implemented in several TWC divisions. In November of last year, Cablevision made caller ID on TV available for free ...

Bridging the physical and digital worlds has been a publisher's dream since the Web first started exerting pressure on print media. The infamous Cuecat hand scanner aside, I have tracked a number of mobile initiatives over the years: 2D scan codes, SMS keyword bugs in ads and editorial, and phone cam images. All of these solutions chase the same fantasy. The phone becomes the activation device for print, letting you effectively click on content to receive some deeper experience in return. ...

With the US economy in a constant state of 'flux', organizations, companies, and even entire industries are obviously looking for opportunities to save money and increase innovation. Those who follow the news are no stranger to the current state of the air travel industry. With constantly shifting demand and load factors, decreased routes, and constant variation in fuel prices, the industry is looking to squeeze the last ounce out of every dollar. I recently spent quite a bit of last week at various airports while traveling on vacation. As a true telecom geek, I'm always curious about how organizations and entities are utilizing technology to aid in their daily operations. At a specific regional airport in the southeast US, the use of converged telephony was in full force. Read more ...

The Bangkok Post writes that True Move, Thailand’s third largest mobile operator by subscribers, is introducing a series of mobile internet Convergence packages by integrating fixed broadband Wi-Fi access on mobile handsets with GPRS/EDGE data services. The new packages give True Move pre-paid and post-paid customers unlimited nationwide internet access through Wi-Fi, EDGE and GPRS for THB450 (USD13.55) per month or THB20 a day, with an option for post-paid subscribers to add unlimited voice calls and other online services for THB299 per month. Alternatively, users can choose just EDGE/GPRS services for THB10 a day or THB250 per month. Parent group True Corp operates a nationwide network of 15,000 Wi-Fi hotspots. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database says that True Move’s GPRS network covers at least 92% of the population, and that last month it contracted Alcatel-Lucent to expand EDGE coverage in Bangkok and the Central-West, South and North regions of Thailand. The database also shows that by the fourth quarter of 2007 data services accounted for around 10.3% of the cellco’s monthly ARPU, and on an annual basis non-voice revenue represented 10.4% of total mobile service revenue, up from 9.6% in 2006 and 7.6% in 2005. According to the Bangkok Post, 15% of True Move’s data earnings last year came from GPRS and EDGE and the remainder from SMS and ringtones. Piroon Paireepairit, the cellco’s director for multimedia services content a ...

All the talk is about LBS and social media, but I think the folks at Trails.com have a valuable proposition, too. The site now offers not just searchable maps, but a full social network build on Pluck. Unlike freebies such as FaceBook or MySpace, the business model here is subscriptions (you get map downloads, trailguides non-subscribers cannot access) and I suspect the powers that be figure an "exclusive" social network is another key draw. - press release ...
