Alley Youngsman, Gabriela Carrasquillo, Benjamin Walter, Shirley Ng, and Stephanie Chin, have all won first prizes in a local competition sponsored by the Town of Framingham’s Public Works Division. Youngsman, Carrasquillo, Walter, Ng, and Chin’s posters were among more than 300 student entries submitted in Framingham’s first annual town wide Zero Waste Poster Contest. The Department of Public Works’ Solid Waste Department established the competition in order to highlight the importance of zero waste to young people in the local community. The winning posters were selected by Jason Smith – Chairman of the Board of Selectman, Peter Sellers – Director of Public Works, Michael Foley – Building Commissioner, Terry Sullivan – Resource Recovery Center Supervisor, and Kelley Donley – Town Recycling Coordinator. Posters were judged on originality, artistic merit, and portrayal of the Contest’s theme of "Zero Waste." Zero Waste is an idea which encourages people to recycle and reuse as much as they can, to reduce the amount of materials they consume, and stresses the cradle-to-grave approach for products created by businesses. The judging was held on September 24, 2008 at Framingham’s Memorial Building. Grand Prizes for this competition were bikes donated by REI and Wal-Mart.
