Clive Crook of the Financial Times and the Atlantic Monthly nails it on the head : Democrats speak up for the less prosperous; they have well-intentioned policies to help them; they are disturbed by inequality, and want to do something about it. Their concern is real and admirable. The trouble is, they lack respect for the objects of their solicitude. Their sympathy comes mixed with disdain, and even Contempt . Democrats regard their policies as self-evidently in the interests of the US working and middle classes. Yet those wide segments of US society keep helping to elect Republican presidents. How is one to account for this? Are those people idiots? Frankly, yes - or so many liberals are driven to conclude. Either that or bigots, clinging to guns, God and white supremacy; or else pathetic dupes, ever at the disposal of Republican strategists. If they only had the brains to Vote in their interests, Democrats think, the party would never be out of power. But again and again, the Republicans tell their lies, and those stupid damned voters buy it. If only the Democrats could contain their sense of entitlement to govern in a rational world, and their consequent distaste for wide swathes of the US electorate, they might gain the unshakeable grip on power they feel they deserve . Winning elections would certainly be easier - and Republicans would have to address themselves more seriously to economic insecurity. But the fathomless cultural c ... Fun and games at the U.S. Senate: During the debate leading up to the Vote on the much-anticipated bailout bill, Sen. Jim DeMint, R.-S.C., launched into a tirade against the plan, declaring that it would drag the United States into a "pit of socialism." Next up, Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., the closest thing the U.S. Congress has to a living, breathing socialist in its ranks. And he, too, hates the bill, asking, with scorn and Contempt, whether it makes any sense to give $700 billion to a former Goldman-Sachs CEO, which he will then distribute to his former colleagues -- precisely the people who created the current mess. "Seems weird to me," he said. Socialists and Southern conservatives unite! You have nothing to lose except possibly a global depression. ... Source: thinkprogress.org --- 96 days ago

Judging by the flat-out anger and how-could-you-do-this wonderment yesterday from the cable news likes of Wolf Blitzer, I had a hunch that today's Washington Post would be a testament to flaming establishmentarian Contempt. The paper did not disappoint. From the lead editorial , with the stale-as-Gibbon headline of "Congressional Neroes: Republicans and Democrats fiddle as the economy burns": Given the poor marketing of a proposal whose advertised $700 billion price tag will probably never materialize in full, and given the fact that the rapidly developing credit crisis has not quite been felt on Main Street, we are not surprised at the angry correspondence from voters -- or, rather, from certain self-selected voters. But among the 133 Republicans and 95 Democrats who voted no yesterday, there are certainly some who know better, and their lack of political courage is stunning. Love those "self-selected" and "know better" bits. Then on page 3, Dana Milbank uses the insanity non-defense : The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 778 points, the largest one-day point drop in history. And no wonder: In the Congress of the United States, the insane are now running the asylum. After the shocking Vote of 228 to 205, party leaders did their usual rounds of partisan finger-pointing, but it really wasn't a partisan issue at all. The center had collapsed in favor of a coalition of far-right and far-left zealots. What was once the lunatic ... Source: tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com --- 31 days ago
House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) has deferred Wednesday's Vote of Contempt for Attorney Gen. Michael Mukasey. The Vote was over the Department of Justice refusing to hand over subpoenaed documents to the committee. The deferral came in light of a letter from the Justice Department requesting the deferral along with some of the documents in question. (House Judiciary Committee) Sen. Larry Craig's (R-ID) lawyers yesterday asked a Minnesota Court to void Craig's guilty plea last year to disorderly conduct after he was arrested in a Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport bathroom. Craig's lawyer claimed that the complaint against Craig was not enough to prove him guilty. Sen. Craig is not seeking re-election for his senate seat which expires in January. (Reuters) House Oversight Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) sent letters yesterday to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Housing Finance Agency Director James Lockhart requesting documents related to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac . The documents in question are related to the severance compensation for the former CEOs of Freddie and Fannie. The House Judiciary Committee has just voted to hold Karl Rove in Contempt for failing to respond to a subpoena to face questioning from the Committee on the prosecution of former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman. The final Vote was 20 ayes and 14 nays. With Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) voting "absolutely, 100% aye." In a memo on the Full Committee meeting, Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) summarized the facts surrounding Rove's refusal to even appear before the committee and assert executive privilege: Mr. Rove has refused even to appear before the Committee and assert whatever privileges that he believes may apply to his testimony, relying on excessively broad and legally insufficient claims of "absolute immunity" - never recognized by any court - in declining to appear. ... Well, well, well. Looks like Boss Palin says he won't testify in Troopergate, either: Gov. Sarah Palin's husband has refused to testify in the investigation of his wife's alleged abuse of power, and a key lawmaker said today that uncooperative witnesses are effectively sidetracking the probe until after Election Day. Todd Palin, who participates in state business in person or by e-mail, was among 13 people subpoenaed by the Alaska Legislature. McCain-Palin presidential campaign spokesman Ed O'Callaghan announced today that Todd Palin would not appear, because he no longer believes the Legislature's investigation is legitimate. Really? Todd no longer thinks it's legitimate? Gee, wow. Wonder how he came to that conclusion? The McCain campaign dispatched a legal team to Alaska including O'Callaghan, a former top U.S. terrorism prosecutor from New York to bolster Palin's local lawyer. Oh yeah, that's right. Free Top Gun lawyers. 100% pure, unadulterated power play here. Here's Palin's bet, broken down for you: The penalty for blowing off your subpoena is a Contempt charge Charging a witness with Contempt requires a majority Vote of at least one house of the state legislature The legislature is officially out of session until January Therefore, there can't be any penalty against him until it's too late and the election is over Pretty sweet, eh? Now of course, one might wonder why the Alaska Legislative Council, which issued the subpoen ...

The Contempt expressed by Republicans for Obama 's past as a community organizer would be amusing if it weren't so sincere. Contempt for community organizing (a phenomenon on both sides of the political spectrum) is essentially Contempt for democracy. How exactly are citizens supposed to look out for their interests if not by organizing to pursue them? Today at TAP Online, The People's Champ Paul Waldman writes : Perhaps most oddly to some ears, Palin even mocked Barack Obama for having worked as a community organizer after graduating college: "This world of threats and dangers is not just a community, and it doesn't just need an organizer," she said to derisive laughter and cheers. One could respond that this world of threats and dangers is not just a small-market local TV station, and it doesn't just need a sports reporter, since that's what Palin did when she finished college. In other words, while Obama was working on things like developing education programs for poor youth and helping tenants get asbestos removed from their apartments, Sarah Palin was attempting to further her career as a sportscaster. Obama was focused on helping working Americans; Palin was focused on herself. Neither gives one a background in national security, but in evaluating the background of a potential public servant, the best community organizers likely overshadow the best sportscasters. Most people would probably Vote for Martin Luther King over Ho ... Source: cdobs.com --- 34 days ago

The new McCain ad which we wrote about last night (at left, in miniature) says of Obama's behavior toward Palin: "How disrespectful." Talking Points Memo, a liberal website, notes that the narration comes from a "derision-dripping, 'uppity' invoking female voice" and shows "the sort of old-fashioned Contempt that whites often held blacks in." In other words, is McCain's message .... How dare this black guy talk back to a white woman? That seems like a fairly harsh interpretation to us. But is it any more of a reach than the McCain campaign pretending that Obama called Palin a pig when he didn't? The press made a big deal out of that. Will we see stories tomorrow about how "McCain denies that he was using southern racist coding in an attempt to put Obama in his place." Perhaps even delving into the Vote against making Martin Luther King Day a national holiday, and other stellar moments from McCain's past..... No end to how dirty this race can get on its current trajectory. ... Source: donklephant.com --- 34 days ago
Now that Sarah Palin has been on the ticket with John McCain for over a week, is there any evidence that her presence is winning over Hillary Clinton supporters? Nothing concrete yet. But self-described progressive feminist Tammy Bruce has written an editorial trying to make the case that Palin as vice president would be better for women than Barack Obama as president. While Tammy Bruce was once the president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization for Women, she’s an odd figure , generally supporting Republicans over Democrats during her tenure as a pundit. I don’t think her opinion is representative of any group larger than herself, but I do expect to see this kind of argument used repeatedly in the attempt to woo Clinton supporters to McCain/Palin. Here is a snip of Bruce’s argument: [W]omen share a different life experience from men, and we bring that difference to the choices we make and the decisions we come to. Having a woman in the White House, and not as The Spouse, is a change whose time has come, despite the fact that some Democratic Party leaders have decided otherwise … The [Democratic] party has moved from taking the female Vote for granted to outright Contempt for women. That’s why Palin represents the most serious conservative threat ever to the modern liberal claim on issues of cultural and social superiority. Why? Because men and women who never before would have considered voting for a Republican have ... Source: pacificfreepress.com --- 23 days ago

The new low for Republicans was John McCain selecting Sarah Palin for his running mate. I guess he thinks just because Palin is a woman, Hillary Clinton supporters will Vote for him and Palin. Instead the selection of Palin demonstrates his Contempt for women. She is vehemently anti-choice and would even deny rape and incest victims abortions. She is more extreme on this issue than McCain. ... Find more results for Contempt Vote on RSSMicro.com |
