Consumer Spending "almost certainly" shrank during the third quarter, according to The New York Times. If the government's figures match the economists' estimates, the paper says it would mark the first time in years that Consumer Spending declined during a three-month reporting period. "Consumer Spending, which accounts for nearly two-thirds of the economy, grew modestly earlier in the year but fell in July and August on an annualized rate," the paper says. "When the government... ...

Heavy markdowns and promotions last month did little to entice shoppers, who focus on buying the basics. September was a dismal month for retailers as the worsening economy and credit crunch hammered Consumer Spending. Consumer Spending, the engine that powers our economy, is probably going to shrink for the first time in nearly two decades, says the NYT — a move that will "all but guarantee" that the current economic crisis will deepen. From the NYT: In response to the falling value of their homes and high gasoline prices, Americans have become more frugal all year. But in recent weeks, as the financial crisis reverberated from Wall Street to Washington, consumers appear to have cut back sharply. Even with the government beginning a giant bailout of the financial system, their confidence may have been too shaken for them to resume their free-Spending ways any time soon. Recent figures from companies, and interviews across the country, show that automobile sales are plummeting, airline traffic is dropping, restaurant chains are struggling to fill tables, customers are sparse in stores. When the final tally is in, Consumer Spending for the quarter just ended will almost certainly shrink, the first quarterly decline in nearly two decades. The Times says that when the government releases the numbers this month, they are expected to show that Consumer Spending shrank by 3%, which would be the steepest decline since 1981 and the only decline since 1990. Consumers are apparently buying more groceries, enjoying fewer meals out, and Spending less on clothes, school supplies, and air travel. Nintendo Wiis, however, are still flying off shelves. “My view ...

Glu Mobile ( NSDQ: GLUU ) said revenues in Q3 will be slightly below the company's previous guidance, and that it will report a "small non-GAAP operating loss," citing slower Consumer Spending, unrealized foreign exchange losses, and possible impairments to goodwill and prepaid royalties. Today, the company's stock fell about 7.5 percent or 15 cents to $1.85 a share. The company will release Q3 results Nov. 4. CEO Greg Ballard explained: "We continued to see headwinds in our North American sales driven by lower Consumer Spending and slower growth in new mobile handset sales. Despite these challenges, we are optimistic about the opportunities we see in 2009 and beyond, as the recent launch of the new iPhone, the debut of the Android platform and Nokia's N-Gage initiative have demonstrated the market's enthusiasm for new high-end platforms. We believe the market for high-end handsets will grow significantly in 2009 and we are Spending an increasing share of our development expenses on titles for high-end handsets. We will bring the majority of our titles currently planned for launch in 2009 to high-end devices, such as the iPhone, N-Gage and Android, as we continue to support Java, BREW and existing smart phones."
