John T. Connor, manager of the Third Millenium Russia fund (TMRFX) and author of "Out of the Red: Investment and Capitalism in Russia," says that the former Soviet Union is the overlooked member of the BRIC emerging markets Nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China), and is much more stable and regulated than it gets credit for. In a radio interview, Connor noted that Russia's recent good times have been fueled by the global commodities boom for energy and precious metals, but noted that the rally has been much more than the "usual boom-and-bust cycle." Connor noted that Russia has become a much more Consumer-based economy, combining many of the benefits of a European culture with the economic picture of an emerging markets economy, making it a good fit for a small cut of many portfolios. ... I was hoping that McCain's Tech Policy would emphasize and extend the two McCain pro-Internet initiatives -- the McCain Lautenberg Community Broadband Act and Spectrum Re-regulation, neither of which have yet seen the light of day -- but it doesn't. In the first case, it makes a vague nod in the direction of "market failure and other obstacles." In the second, it treats spectrum policy as a done deal; now that we can surf the Web in coffee shops, we're done. I was hoping that McCain's tech guru, Mike Powell, would have written more wireless innovation into the plan. The time is ripe to develop cognitive radios with the ability to use spectrum a bit more intelligently than 1920s technology would permit, but the plan simply nods to stillborn past efforts on this critical issue; it provides no way forward. Modern spectrum regulation would have been a step towards more Consumer choice, which McCain touts as a substitute for "prescriptive regulation like 'net-neutrality.'" There are thirteen uses of words with the morpheme "compet." All but three refer to US competitiveness against other Nations. The other three are about digital devices. There's NOTHING about spurring broadband competition with the telcos and cablecos . . . unless they've already opted out of a "failed market." The plan lavishes lip service on "innovation," and this masks the fact that the first two things the U.S. Internet needs have nothing to do with innovation. We need ...

Consumption is the sole end and purpose of all production; and the interest of the producer ought to be attended to, only so far as it may be necessary for promoting that of the Consumer. - Adam Smith, The Wealth of Nations Consumers want ample and unfettered access to the Internet. They want lots of megabits at low prices without caps and thresholds and blocks. Adam Smith wasn’t big on Facebook , but he has the right idea to get consumers what they want today. For a brief period after the Telecommunications Act of 1996 , the U.S. was flush with shiny new ISPs laying fiber and offering attractive Internet services to consumers. During the Internet bubble, capital was easily accessible and billions of dollars were invested in the creation of broadband infrastructure. That all stopped in 2001 when the telco bubble went the way of the Internet bubble and investors went off to buy subprime mortgages (not to mention the fact that enforcing the Telecommunications Act became an afterthought). Since then, the ISP market has steadily been consolidating to a smaller number of more powerful carriers. In most markets, US consumers have the choice of only two ISPs. In some markets, there’s only one choice (which is not much of a choice at all). Advocates of Net Neutrality legislation have witnessed a steady path back to Ma Bell. Concentration of power in the hands of a few business behemoths makes us all nervous, so the Net Neutrality crew has prop ...

Vegging out in front of your flat-panel TV may pose more danger than turning your brain to mush. A chemical used in the manufacturing of flat-screen televisions could rival some of the world's most potent greenhouse gases in its harmful effects on the environment, according to a June study published in Geophysical Research Letters. The production of nitrogen triflouride, or NF3 -- used to produce flat-panel display screens -- has increased over the past decade to meet the rising demand for Consumer electronics like liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs. Global production of NF3 now outstrips the 2005 emissions of synthetically produced greenhouse gases, such as perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), the report found. "NF3 has a potential greenhouse impact larger than that of the industrialized Nations' emissions of PFCs or SF6, or even that of the world's largest coal-fired power plants," write Michael Prather and Juno Hsu, the study's authors. They call NF3 the "missing greenhouse gas" because it's not covered under the Kyoto Protocol -- the international agreement established to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. When the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change adopted the treaty in 1997, NF3 was produced only in small quantities, primarily for rocket… ... Source: www.bignewsnetwork.com --- 20 days ago
