John T. Connor, manager of the Third Millenium Russia fund (TMRFX) and author of "Out of the Red: Investment and Capitalism in Russia," says that the former Soviet Union is the overlooked member of the BRIC emerging markets Nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China), and is much more stable and regulated than it gets credit for. In a radio interview, Connor noted that Russia's recent good times have been fueled by the global commodities boom for energy and precious metals, but noted that the rally has been much more than the "usual boom-and-bust cycle." Connor noted that Russia has become a much more Consumer-based economy, combining many of the benefits of a European culture with the economic picture of an emerging markets economy, making it a good fit for a small cut of many portfolios. ...

I was hoping that McCain's Tech Policy would emphasize and extend the two McCain pro-Internet initiatives -- the McCain Lautenberg Community Broadband Act and Spectrum Re-regulation, neither of which have yet seen the light of day -- but it doesn't. In the first case, it makes a vague nod in the direction of "market failure and other obstacles." In the second, it treats spectrum policy as a done deal; now that we can surf the Web in coffee shops, we're done. I was hoping that McCain's tech guru, Mike Powell, would have written more wireless innovation into the plan. The time is ripe to develop cognitive radios with the ability to use spectrum a bit more intelligently than 1920s technology would permit, but the plan simply nods to stillborn past efforts on this critical issue; it provides no way forward. Modern spectrum regulation would have been a step towards more Consumer choice, which McCain touts as a substitute for "prescriptive regulation like 'net-neutrality.'" There are thirteen uses of words with the morpheme "compet." All but three refer to US competitiveness against other Nations. The other three are about digital devices. There's NOTHING about spurring broadband competition with the telcos and cablecos . . . unless they've already opted out of a "failed market." The plan lavishes lip service on "innovation," and this masks the fact that the first two things the U.S. Internet needs have nothing to do with innovation. We need ...

According to Cote Collaborative analyst Michael Cote, the Apple iPhone 3G has hit 3 million sales in its first month, strong demand that far surpasses that of the original iPhone. "They are seeing unprecedented demand," says Cote, noting that sales do not appear to be slowing down either. The sales pace is a stark contrast to the downward trends in Consumer spending across the board, in the US and abroad. Wall Street had anticipated 3 million total quarterly sales for the device but it is looking now like 5-6 million will be more accurate. For comparison, the iPhone 3G sold 1 million units in 3 days while it took 74 days for the original iPhone to hit the milestone. The new version does have a few advantages that is surely leading to its hot sales. The $199 USD price tag is half the price of the original iPhone. Touchscreen mobile phones are the hottest trend now for the market and the iPhone 3G gets to capitalize on that Consumer enthusiasm. The phone is also now available in 22 countries, with releases set for 48 more countries before the end of the year. The original iPhone was only available in 4 Nations. Cote does predict however that Apple will have problems keeping up with demand. "The demand is so strong it may impact or delay the new countries coming on," Cote says. We should all be so lucky to have problems of that nature. Permalink | Comments ...

Consumption is the sole end and purpose of all production; and the interest of the producer ought to be attended to, only so far as it may be necessary for promoting that of the Consumer. - Adam Smith, The Wealth of Nations Consumers want ample and unfettered access to the Internet. They want lots of megabits at low prices without caps and thresholds and blocks. Adam Smith wasn’t big on Facebook , but he has the right idea to get consumers what they want today. For a brief period after the Telecommunications Act of 1996 , the U.S. was flush with shiny new ISPs laying fiber and offering attractive Internet services to consumers. During the Internet bubble, capital was easily accessible and billions of dollars were invested in the creation of broadband infrastructure. That all stopped in 2001 when the telco bubble went the way of the Internet bubble and investors went off to buy subprime mortgages (not to mention the fact that enforcing the Telecommunications Act became an afterthought). Since then, the ISP market has steadily been consolidating to a smaller number of more powerful carriers. In most markets, US consumers have the choice of only two ISPs. In some markets, there’s only one choice (which is not much of a choice at all). Advocates of Net Neutrality legislation have witnessed a steady path back to Ma Bell. Concentration of power in the hands of a few business behemoths makes us all nervous, so the Net Neutrality crew has prop ...

clipped by: Silkweaver clipper's remarks: The problem in the Pacific is so severe a humongous plastic-strewn patch floats between California and Hawaii within the North Pacific Gyre. According to the man who first discovered it in 1997, Captain John Moore, this patch is 1 ½ times the size of the contiguous United States and goes to a depth of at least 100 feet. And there is another huge rubbish patch off the coast of Japan. Clip Source: www.dailygalaxy.com Could it be too late to save the global ocean, which covers 70% of the earth’s surface? When you tally up all the environmental damage from a variety of causes it’s not hard to conclude by the end of this century the ocean will be unable to support the vast diversity of life we have come to associate with it. Instead of shellfish, whales, and tuna, it will be teeming with algae and jellyfish. Humankind’s gluttonous appetite for plastic, fertilizers, and of course, carbon fuels is the cause. Plastic? You might how this could be a major problem until you realize the average Consumer in an industrialized country uses 250 pounds every year. The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that currently 46,000 pieces of plastic are floating on every square mile of the ocean. Despite mounting evidence of the myriad negative effects of factory farming, it remains the foundation of animal agribusiness. The indecent nature of the enterprise is manifested in numerous abusive practices and increasingly, activists are looking to the courts and legislatures to demand change. Is government intervention necessary to enact corporate responsibility? A unanimous victory in the New Jersey State Supreme Court suggests that agribusiness need to account for considerations beyond the bottom line. The non-profit Farm Sanctuary led a coalition of humane organizations, farmers, veterinarians, environmental and Consumer groups that recently won a precedent setting victory against factory farms. Factory farms, according to the United Nations Standing Committee on Nutrition , are “characterized by confinement of the animals at high stocking density, often in barren and unnatural conditions." While federal and state legislation outlaw animal cruelty, in most cases these laws do not protect animals slaughtered for food. Are industry giants manipulating the spirit of the law? The coalition successfully challenged the New Jersey Department of Agriculture’s definition of humane animal husbandry practices before the New Jersey State Supreme Court. New Jersey, like many states, has an exemption to its animal cruelty law for routine animal husbandry practices – the suit argued such a broad definition of routine practices abets inhu ...

Vegging out in front of your flat-panel TV may pose more danger than turning your brain to mush. A chemical used in the manufacturing of flat-screen televisions could rival some of the world's most potent greenhouse gases in its harmful effects on the environment, according to a June study published in Geophysical Research Letters. The production of nitrogen triflouride, or NF3 -- used to produce flat-panel display screens -- has increased over the past decade to meet the rising demand for Consumer electronics like liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs. Global production of NF3 now outstrips the 2005 emissions of synthetically produced greenhouse gases, such as perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), the report found. "NF3 has a potential greenhouse impact larger than that of the industrialized Nations' emissions of PFCs or SF6, or even that of the world's largest coal-fired power plants," write Michael Prather and Juno Hsu, the study's authors. They call NF3 the "missing greenhouse gas" because it's not covered under the Kyoto Protocol -- the international agreement established to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. When the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change adopted the treaty in 1997, NF3 was produced only in small quantities, primarily for rocket… ...
