They said all the right things, about preparation and taking nothing for granted, and given their experience and their overall level-headedness, you almost believed them. Starting tonight, the Detroit Red Wings will have three chances to win the Stanley Cup, two at home, where they've won every game but one so far in the NHL's 2008 playoffs. So even if there are no sure things in sport, this is about as close as it gets. ... Source: www.tsn.ca --- 99 days ago

As the Detroit Red Wings are on the brink of winning their fourth Stanley Cup in 10 seasons many are starting to realize that there are more than a handful of choices for playoff MVP. Both teams have star-studded lineups which possess some of the best players of the decade. While we inch closer to the end, here are the top 10 selections for the Conn Smythe. 10) Niklas Kronwall Kronwall, on the other side of the spectrum, has his opponents remembering his name more than the fans do. This hard-hitting defenseman is shaping up to have offensive upsides of Nick Lidstrom and the force of Ulf Samuelsson - scary combination. 9) Evgeni Malkin Malkin has been a ghost in this year's finals. His poor play of late has brought down his stock faster than the Ottawa Senators playoff run. On the other hand, he is a candidate for the Hart Trophy as he kept the Penguins in the run when Sidney Crosby was injured. His performances in round one and two are exceptional, recording 17 points in 10 games. Now, he has picked up 2 points in his last 9 games. If Gino gets his spark back, this series could quite possibly turn around. 8) Johan Franzen It seems like every mule has their day. Franzen's day, however, has lasted for the last two-and-a-half months. Franzen leads all playoff goal scorers with 13 goals, but the amazing thing is that Franzen missed 6 games in the playoffs. He is averaging right under the goal-a-game mark, and has given Detroit another ... Source: ballhype.com --- 50 days ago

Here's the team announcement: The Lightning have hired former NHL goaltender Mike Vernon as special assistant to the vice president of hockey operations today, owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie announced. Vernon ’s duties will be to assist in hockey-related matters and to provide guidance to the team’s goaltenders. “The Tampa Bay Lightning are thrilled to add a former Stanley Cup Champion to our staff,” vice president of hockey operations Brian Lawton said. “Mike’s past experience and knowledge will be a true benefit to the organization and it will be critical to us as we continue to make changes within the team to improve it.” Vernon , a five-time NHL All-Star who retired in 2002 after a stellar 17-season NHL career with Calgary , Detroit , San Jose and Florida , captured the Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989 and again with Detroit in 1997. He was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1997 after posting a 16-4 record and 1.76 goals-against average in the playoffs for the Red Wings. A native of Calgary , Vernon , 45, holds Flames goaltending records for games played (526), wins (262), minutes played (29,649), playoff games (81), playoff minutes (4,773) and playoff wins (43). While with the Red Wings he shared the William Jennings Trophy with Chris Osgood in 1996 after the pair combined for the NHL ’s lowest goals-against average.
