Here's the team announcement: The Lightning have hired former NHL goaltender Mike Vernon as special assistant to the vice president of hockey operations today, owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie announced. Vernon ’s duties will be to assist in hockey-related matters and to provide guidance to the team’s goaltenders. “The Tampa Bay Lightning are thrilled to add a former Stanley Cup Champion to our staff,” vice president of hockey operations Brian Lawton said. “Mike’s past experience and knowledge will be a true benefit to the organization and it will be critical to us as we continue to make changes within the team to improve it.” Vernon , a five-time NHL All-Star who retired in 2002 after a stellar 17-season NHL career with Calgary , Detroit , San Jose and Florida , captured the Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989 and again with Detroit in 1997. One of the most intriguing players on the Stars because of his contract (three more years at $7.8 million) and his previous accomplishments (Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP and a 91-point season in 2005-06), Brad Richards will be a huge key to the team's success next season. My first inclination is to tell everyone to lower their expectations with Richards. He is probably overpaid at the money he makes, but the Stars felt they could take on that contract rather than seek a higher paid alternative in free agency. He also has 500 points in 564 career regular season games, including 62 in 74 last season and 70 in 82 the year before that -- not what you would call superstar numbers.
