TAMPA -- Expect the huge Confederate Flag along Interstate 75 to remain up for the foreseeable future. Until now, the Sons of Confederate Veterans have been coy about just when the 30- by 50-foot Flag near the junction of Interstate 4 would fly for good. The Flag has been raised for brief periods and lowered at least twice before it was put up in August to commemorate outspoken Flag proponent Bart Seigel, who died last month in an apparent suicide. "My hunch, my gut feeling, is that it will probably stay up," said Marion Lambert, who spearheaded the effort to erect the Flag and a monument around its base along U.S. 92 in the Eureka Springs neighborhood. Compared with national attention garnered when the Flag was raised in June, the permanent raising of the Confederate Flag -- if that's what this proves to be -- on a 139-foot pole is decidedly low-key. Lambert said the group is tired of trying to negotiate with vocal critics and especially the NAACP, whose leader, Curtis Stokes, has criticized the SCV. A recent forum in Tampa to promote dialogue attracted only 14 people. "It was a complete washout," Lambert said. "Would we like to talk to the proper partners of the community about this? Certainly we would. But it doesn’t seem to be germane to their interests." Construction of the monument, which will include names of Confederate soldiers, landscaping and lights to illuminate the Flag at night, is expected to resume around Oct. 1. I ...

A giant Confederate Flag near Interstates 75 and 4 in central Florida has been flying for nearly two weeks and is likely to stay aloft, reports the St. Petersburg Times . The Sons of Confederate Veterans raised the banner, not that everyone is saluting the move. "My phone has been ringing the last two weeks nonstop," said Michelle Williams, a community activist who opposes the Flag. "They want to know why the Flag is still flying." "My hunch, my gut feeling, is that it will probably stay up," said Marion Lambert, who spearheaded the idea for a proposed memorial park for Confederate Veterans, the spot where the Flag is now flying. "We just love seeing that Flag flying high," he said. "It's exhilarating." Good or bad idea? You decide. NAACP wages new effort to bring down Confederate Flag Governor says he won’t get involved By Tim Smith • STAFF WRITER • September 22, 2008 COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina and North Carolina chapters of the NAACP called the Confederate Flag that flies on Statehouse grounds here a symbol of evil and terrorism and said Monday they will join in their efforts to remove it. “As long as this Flag blows, it pushes a foul wind of separatism, division and racism that is not contained by the borders of South Carolina,” said the Rev. William Barber, president of the North Carolina NAACP. The two chapters of the organization used the anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation to announce new efforts. North Carolina’s NAACP plans to fight any cooperation between that state and South Carolina in film projects until the Flag is removed, Barber said. Dr. Lonnie Randolph, president of the South Carolina NAACP, said press conferences supporting a boycott of South Carolina were held simultaneously in seven southeastern states. “This is not a South Carolina issue,” he said. “This is a national issue.” The battle Flag was moved to its current location near the Confederate Soldiers Memorial on the north side of the Statehouse in 2000 as a result of a legislative compromise to take it off the Statehouse dome. The NAACP has protested its location ever since and organized a tourism and travel boycott of the state. On Monday, Gov. Mark Sanford repeated his pre ...

Mike Salinero, Tampa Tribune - The gigantic Confederate Flag flying at an Interstate 75 approach to Tampa will stay up indefinitely, the property owner says. The Confederate Flag might be seen as equivalent to a swastika by blacks, but it is seen as a sign of independence and resistance against oppression by those who display it. I think the choice of whether or not to display it depends on why you are displaying it, not on what someone else might think about it. ...

I just responded to a reader’s comments about the Confederate Flag. It made me revisit something that I had discussed with someone else in the not so distant past. What is the problem with the Confederate Flag, today? To some, my take on it might sound over-simplistic, but I see the problem as ”layers.” The Flag has historical “layers.” Even at [...] ...

Following his loss to George W. Bush in the 2000 South Carolina primary, John McCain did something extraordinary: He confessed to lying about how he felt about the Confederate battle Flag, which he actually abhorred. "I broke my promise to always tell the truth," McCain said. Now he has broken that promise so completely that the John McCain of old is unrecognizable. He has become the sort of politician he once despised. ...

HOO-BOY. Apparently the Republicans have noticed that their party is whiter than...well, whiter than anything really. Whiter than a Klan rally in a bleach commercial. Whiter than Mayonnaisopalooza '63. Whiter than a Billy Joel concert. You get the idea. So in Virginia, to address the problem, to headline a rally in Fairfax County designed to appeal to minorities (Fairfax has a large number of Latinos, Indians, Pakistanis and Koreans), they drafted... George Allen . Yes, that George Allen, the macaca guy. The one who loves the Confederate Flag , despite being raised in California. The Virginia GOP spokesman said the macaca flap was all Wikipedia's fault, and his father, George Allen Sr, coached black football players, so how can his son be racist? For what it's worth, his father gained most fame as coach of the Washington Redskins, who were the last NFL team to integrate.  ...

Pomp, nationalism and demonstrations of military force before postseason baseball games always make me want to puke. And on Thursday night in Philly, I found yet another reason to feel sick to my stomach. Members of the U.S. military took their places around the infield before the first pitch, toting the flags of the 50 states. At least, that’s what they were supposed to be doing. But one guy was carrying the now defunct, racist Georgia Flag, featuring the oversized Confederate bars and stars. This state Flag was abandoned, for good reason, in 2001 after a good deal of political warfare. It was replaced with one that no longer dredges up catastrophic images of institutional, Southern slavery. Now only the state Flag of Mississippi features the symbol, and it is tucked a bit more diplomatically into a small corner. But there on Thursday night, between first and second base, not far from where Ryan Howard was standing, was what amounted to a Confederate Flag gently waving in the breeze. And even as I was screaming about this outrage in the press box, nobody seemed to notice or care a bit. The commissioner of baseball, who still allows Chief Wahoo to stare out from the caps of Cleveland ballplayers, probably thought this whole show was just wonderful. I don’t get it. I suppose I never will. But just once I’d like to hear from Howard or one of the other players about the symbols still permitted to parade around baseball fields in America ...
