Concordia may have changed coaches and conferences, but the high expectations for its football program remain. According to a poll of league coaches, the Falcons, who made the Division III playoffs the past two seasons, are the team to beat in the inaugural season of the Northern Athletics Conference. If the coaches are right, the league will be controlled by former members of the Illini-Badger Conference. After Concordia, former IBFC members Lakeland, Aurora and Benedictine were picked to finish second, third and fourth, respectively. The NAC is in its third year of existence, but 2008 marks the first year the league offers football. This also marks the first season Jeff Gabrielsen has not run the Falcons program since 1990. His successor, Greg Etter relishes the role of favorite even though the program will be learning a new defensive philosophy and enduring the typical transition that comes with the hiring of a new head coach. "That is one of reasons I took the job, I don't care if you're at Division I, Division II or Division III, there is only so many programs in the country where you can consistently compete for championships," Etter said. "So when I saw our name on the top of the coaches' pre-season poll, it wasn't a surprise to me.
