Luiz Barroso talks about the concept of Energy Proportional Computing and how he thinks DRAM and disk manufacturers could do a better job creating devices consume energy in proportion to the Computing to perform. Barroso and Holzle analyzed 5000 servers at Google over six months and found the average CPU utilization was between 15-45% - the region in which a computer operates the least efficiently. At issue is the fact that most manufacturers maximize efficiency to SPECpower which assumes that the computer is running at 100% utilization. ... Source: www.infoworld.com --- 4 days ago
Cloud Computing is fraught with security risks, according to analyst firm Gartner. Smart customers will ask tough questions and consider getting a security assessment from a neutral third party before committing to a cloud vendor, Gartner says in a June report titled " Assessing the Security Risks of Cloud Computing ." Cloud Computing has "unique attributes that require risk assessment in areas such as data integrity, recovery, and privacy, and an evaluation of legal issues in areas such as e-discovery, regulatory compliance, and auditing," Gartner says. (Compare security products .) Amazon's EC2 service and Google's Google App Engine are examples of cloud Computing, which Gartner defines as a type of Computing in which "massively scalable IT-enabled capabilities are delivered 'as a service' to external customers using Internet technologies." Customers must demand transparency, avoiding vendors that refuse to provide detailed information on security programs. Ask questions related to the qualifications of policy makers, architects, coders and operators; risk-control processes and technical mechanisms; and the level of testing that's been done to verify that service and control processes are functioning as intended, and that vendors can identify unanticipated vulnerabilities. Here are seven of the specific security issues Gartner says customers should raise with vendors before selecting a cloud vendor. 1. Privileged user access. S ... Oracle's earnings, better than expected, were up 27% to $2 billion or 39 cents a share in its fourth fiscal quarter on revenues up 24% to $7.24 billion and good thing too considering Oracle is this week's roundly watched harbinger of what's happening in the economy at this very, um, nasty intersection. Oracle CEO Larry Ellison thinks Oracle's results said more about Oracle's execution than the macro economy. ... Source: dotnet.sys-con.com --- 3 days ago

There has been a bit of back and forth banter between NVIDIA and Intel over the last few months that gets a little juicier each time one of the two camps gets the opportunity to slam the other. This weeks I challenge you to a duel slap with the white glove came in the form of these comments made by Intel. In a Q&A session after announcing Intels 40th birthday, we asked Intels senior vice president and co-general manager of Intel Corporation's Digital Enterprise Group, Pat Gelsinger, where he saw GPGPU languages such as CUDA in the future. He said that they would be nothing more than interesting footnotes in the history of Computing annals. Is it just me or does that quote above sound a lot like Jack Black in School of Rock when he gives the whole ..you'll be a funny little footnote on my epic ass speech. Definitely quote of the day.
