Qantas flight QF72 traveling from Singapore to Perth on Tuesday was forced to make an emergency landing in at Learmonth air base in Western Australia (about 1,100 kilometres northeast of the state capital Perth ) after it unexpectedly and rapidly climbed and then lost altitude. Some 70 plus passengers and crew were injured, some severely. Initial speculation was that the aircraft hit a pocket of air turbulence. However, now, speculation is that there may have been something wrong with the onboard Computer equipment. Air safety investigators supposedly have told Qantas that, "The pilots received electronic centralised aircraft monitoring messages in the cockpit relating to some irregularity with the aircraft's elevator control System." However, in another story appearing today in the Australian paper the HeraldSun , speculation focuses on a known problem with elevation controls on the Airbus A330-300 aircraft, the type of aircraft involved in the incident. This story seems to imply that the problem was more likely mechanical than Computer-oriented in nature, and was one that was supposed to have been fixed by June of this year to comply with a safety directive covering the issue. I'll let you know what transpires are the story moves from the realm of speculation to fact. ... Source: www.harmony-central.com --- 32 days ago

Now this is some serious Computer theft. We're talking 19,709 pieces of stolen Computer equipment from the US Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC. The theft included everything from PCs and printer toner to hard drives, software and other office equipment amounting to over $120,000 according to court documents and published reports. The systems administrator, Victor Papagno plead guilty in federal court today to stealing the items in a period between 1997 and 2007 to benefit Papagno and his friends, reports said . He took so much stuff that he stored some of it in neighbors' houses, according to WTOP.com a local news outlet. That report indicated that no secret technological information had been taken but that private information from 14 employees and contractors who worked at the laboratory from 1998 to 2002 had been found on CDs or zip drives, and those people were contacted, the agency said. Sentencing is set for December when Papagno could face up to two years in jail for the thefts. The US Naval Research Laboratory calls itself the Navy's corporate laboratory and conducts all manner of scientific research.
