When I first started to invite people to talk with me on this blog back in May, I posted an entry about a proposed 70,000 square foot Community Center in Middletown, which would be located at Veterans Park and would house both the city's parks and recreation office and the senior Center, along with a Veterans' Museum and meeting rooms that could be utilized by civic and Community groups. Planners estimated that the cost of the new Center would be about $20 million to $25 million. Currently, the parks and rec office is housed in a small space in the River View Center, with not a lot of extra room for programming. The Senior Center is accross Route 66 on Williams Street and is often used as a voting site during primaries, referendums and general elections. Last year, the Center's planning committee selected Quisenberry Arcari Architects for the Community Center project, and the firm and the committee held about a dozen focus groups with Community organizations and city departments to discuss what should be in the new Center . The committee also asked for input from residents. Well the Community Center committee will be meeting to discuss the project on Sept. 22 at 3:15 p.m. in Room 7 at Board of Education headquarters at 311 Hunting Hill Avenue. In a blog posting back in May, one reader has expressed frustration over the time the committee holds its meetings, saying the 3:15 p.m. time period was not convenient for most people who wo ... Young ladies at the Ohrenberger Community Center have some more money to help girls go. Thanks to a $10,000 grant from GoGirlGo, a nationwide initiative “to motivate girls to participate in physical activity and remain physically active,” students at the Center will have more to do this school year. Tom Regan, program supervisor at the Community Center, said the grant would go to create three 10-week sessions for pre-teen and teenage girls. “It’s about learning about yourself,” said Regan. “It will focus on girls and preteens that really don’t have a lot to do after school and give them a chance to become a teenager in the Community and help out with the school.” The sessions will take place three days a week and mix physically active and art-based activities. Most of the attendees will be students at the Ohrenberger, so once school gets started students will be able to sign up for the sessions. The curriculum will soon be developed after the Center hires a staff person to teach the classes. GoGirlGo will also provide free education materials for girls ages 8 to 18. The materials will include such items as GoGirl! Guide to Life with personal stories about female athletes who have made healthy choices. For girls ages 13 to 18, an Ambassador Leadership Program will provide them with college scholarships and team grant incentives to individuals and programs that advocate physical activity among their peers.
