Steroids should be banned from horse racing in Kentucky, an industry subcommittee says. The recommendation from a subcommittee of the state Equine Drug Research Council will now go to the council and then could be considered by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission at its August meeting. The recommendation is not meant to stop the use of steroids in veterinary care of horses, but they should not be allowed in racing, the Committee statement said. Committee members had very little debate over the topic, said Dr. Mary Scollay, the commission's medical director who served on the Committee. ...

Some town officials are very irritated the newly recreated Finance Committee is missing Joy Smith Dahl, the only previous member to apply for reappointment and not be named. The new town charter required the Committee be reassembled from scratch and pared from 12 to nine seats. Eight of the members are from the Committee's previous term, with one new appointee. All three officials who handled the appointments said there was nothing personal about the decision and they chose the nine best candidates from what was a highly qualified pool. But others said Smith Dahl was passed over for voicing dissenting opinions, including recently about the size of proposed raises for Town Administrator Suzanne K. Kennedy and other top town staff. "If the Finance Committee is to remain a viable voice for the people and do viable vetting of the financial interests of the town, it needs to represent different viewpoints," said Planning Board Chairman Andy Rodenhiser. "That needs to exist without the fear of reprisal." "What is the message we're sending to the rest of the Finance Committee? If you don't behave well in public, your service will be hung around your neck," added Rodenhiser, whose company employs Smith Dahl. Town Moderator Mark Cerel, Finance Committee Chairman Robert Kenney, who is stepping down, and selectmen Chairman Glenn Trindade held a public selection process after interviewing the candidates. The charter says the people who fill ...

School Committee member Rick Wynn will leave the School Committee at the end of the month to focus on starting a new business, he said yesterday. Wynn served just over four years on the School Committee and was chairman much of last year, an eventful year for Natick schools. The seat will be filled by a person appointed jointly by the School Committee and selectmen. "I'm going to be in the process of trying to start a new business, and I just really have to dedicate all my energy trying to get that business off the ground," Wynn said. "And I need to save some time for my family, too." After being appointed to fill the vacancy left when Christine Van Amsterdam left the School Committee, Wynn won a three-year term in 2005. In March Wynn won a second full term on the board, but at the time said he did not think he would leave the board so soon. "I knew it was possible I wouldn't be able to finish the term, but I didn't know timing," Wynn said. "It came sooner than I thought." Wynn manages a private equity fund at Putnam Investments, but said his new business would be in a different field. He did not elaborate on his plans. School Committee Chairman Stephen Meyler praised Wynn's work as a member, especially his time as chairman from March 2007 to March 2008. During that year the School Committee found a new leader for the district, went to voters with a Proposition 2 1/2 override and dealt with the controversy over the Redmen nicknam ...

Hoping to make a smooth transition between outgoing and incoming superintendents, School Committee members met Friday to make sure nothing gets lost during the upcoming shuffle of administrations. During the special public meeting at Waltham High School, Mayor Jeannette McCarthy joined available Committee members Robert Cincotta and Harold Walker to discuss the transition of outgoing Superintendent Susan Parrella and incoming Superintendent Peter Azar. Parrella announced earlier this year she would leave her position in August. Her contract expires Aug. 16 and her last day of work is expected to be Aug. 15. She has headed district since 1998. Former Winchendon School Superintendent Peter Azar was selected as the new superintendent of Waltham schools on June 18. Azar was named superintendent of Winchendon schools in 2004. Earlier this year the Winchendon School Committee voted not to renew his contract. Pending a final contract, Azar is expected to begin his first day of work as the new superintendent on Aug. 18. In the interim, Azar is being hired on as a consultant to begin learning about the district. From Aug. 4 to 8 Azar will review contracts and study the school improvement plan, among other things, in preparation of his new position. McCarthy said he is then expected to go on vacation before returning as the superintendent. During Friday's meeting, Committee members said they were concerned about any leftover matters Parrell ...
