JEFF FOUST on the new (Commercial) Space Race. "As the schedule for SpaceShipTwo slips, it provides an opportunity for other companies to gain a better footing in the market, and possibly even try to enter service before Virgin. Last week XCOR Aerospace made its latest move into the suborbital spaceflight market, announcing a vehicle, dubbed Lynx, that could enter service within two years. The efforts of XCOR and others are resulting in a wide diversity of vehicles, leaving it up to the market to determine which one—or ones—work best." ... In Tuesday's edition of this fine newspaper , I wrote extensively about the generally positive buzz about Indy Car racing leading up to the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday. That story takes a broad look at the Indy Racing League, but I though it might be fun to use this Space to examine how some of the drivers and teams are financing their seasons. Some of the sponsorship tie-ins are pretty intriguing. Dan Wheldon: As a member of the Target/Chip Ganassi team, he is not want for support. His sponsorships include Target (obviously), Energizer batteries, Polaroid and my personal favorite, the Commit nicotine lozenge. The Commit lozenge has been big in NASCAR, where the company gives out a cash prize to the driver who leads the first lap of a Race. The award is known as the "Commit to Win" Award. Danica Patrick: On media day in New York on Monday, it seemed like every driver had an iPhone. But not Danica; she's Motorola head-to-toe. Danica also has a big sponsorship with GoDaddy.com, appearing in a racy (pun!) Commercial during the Super Bowl. Tony Kanaan: A member of Andretti Green Racing, Kanaan has long been supported by 7-Eleven. But unfortunately, there's no cupholder in an Indy Car to hold a 64 ounce Slurpee. Marco Andretti: The grandson of 1969 Indy 500 winner Mario Andretti will have the name "Indiana Jones" splashed alongside his car for Sunday's Race. Duh Duh-Duh-Duh! Duh Duh-Duh! Duh Duh-Duh-Duh! June 11, 2008 Human beings respond well when challenged and the bolder the challenge, the greater the result. The Frisian Solar Challenge for boats is proof of this and its second running later this month portends a new age – one of silent, non-intrusive and respectful water-based leisure and ultimately, a plethora of distributed power generation solutions. The inaugural 2006 Challenge turned the Dutch province into a hotbed of Commercial sustainable energy development and the week-long solar-boat tour of the region has developed a most intriguing man versus machine competition. From June 22 to June 28, Friesland will be home to the world’s largest Race of solar vessels: The Frisian Solar Challenge. The Race runs along the 220-kilometres-long route of the Frisian Eleven Cities route already famous as the birthplace of competitive skating and the pictured Space-age boat is the current favourite for the Race with its expected 20 km/h top speed. .. by Richard C. Cook Since the Cold War ended over a decade ago, we have been living in an age when the worlds political, economic, and technological evolution, including Space exploration, has diversified among many more nations. As the U.S. commences its new moon-Mars exploratory program, other countries are not remaining earthbound while NASA plans a return to the scene of its greatest triumphs. In fact a new international Space Race has begun. The big question is whether it is motivated by peaceful or military objectives. ESA Finds an Opening The domination of Space by the U.S. and Soviet Union was eclipsed during the Space shuttle era when a role for the European Space Agency (ESA) began to emerge. With both the U.S. and Soviet Union having placed major emphasis on a) human spaceflight and b) robotic scientific probes beyond earths gravitation, ESA found an opening in the Commercial satellite launch market. Ariane was developed to fill the gap, with its first successful launch on December 24, 1979. Today Ariane, launching from Guiana on the northeast coast of South America, is the worlds premier Commercial satellite launcher. The Ariane 4 and 5 rockets are the most successful launch systems in history. ESA also made an impact in the human spaceflight arena by developing and managing the shuttle-borne Spacelab, carried in the Space shuttles payload bay. Spacelab flew on 25 shuttle missions, ending with STS-99 in February 200 ... Source: www.redcounty.com --- 5 days ago

Has it been four years already since Burt Rutan , backed by Paul Sperry of Microsoft and Richard Branson, the Virgin Atlantic guy, won the Ansari prize by getting an aircraft built by his company Scaled Composites into Space and then doing it again within 30 days? Anyway, I went up to Mojave to see the final qualifying flight (joined by thousands of other enthusiasts). Saw Adrian Moore there and met a bunch of interesting people. Having met Burt Rutan at a Reason event and talked with him at some length, I believe he is probably in fact thrilled that he now has some competition in the Commercial Space Race (at least a dozen hopefuls had booths or exhibits at Burt Rutan's event). Xcor Aerospace, also of Mojave (it's a small airport, with almost no Commercial flights, which may be attractive to innovators), has a Space ship it expects to have ready to fly in two years. The Air Force has given the company a contract as well, to demonstrate the spacecraft's capabilities. At least a half dozen other companies are designing Space tourism vehicles, and even the FAA now thinks Space tourism could be a !1 billion a year industry by 2021. I think it will happen faster than that. There's nothing like competition to spur innovation. As Burt Rutan has pointed out, the important thing is to get out there and start having fun, playing, experimenting. The Internet was available for years before people figured out what to do with it, and the ... Source: thefritzblitz.blogspot.com --- 33 days ago
One complaint that people who name Race horses have is that all the good names are taken. To some degree, this is true. Names of famous horses are officially retired by The Jockey Club, so there will never be another Man O’War or Secretariat. Horse names also cannot be reused until 15 years after the previous horse’s death. There are other rules—no “vulgar, obscene or suggestive” names, and no names of “Commercial significance” (although Big Brown apparently slid by). With an increasing number of common names being taken, one recent gimmick is to string a phrase together as one word (to fit the 18-letter Space limit), such as Atswhatimtalkinbout. Occasionally, this works (e.g., current harness phenom Somebeachsomewhere), but it usually results in cumbersome, unmemorable names. U.S. Trotting Association writer Dean Hoffman has suggested naming horses after classic literature, such as Absalom Absalom, Catcher In The Rye, A Farewell To Arms—you get the idea. This is imaginative, although I would stop short of naming a horse The Idiot. This got me thinking—why not name horses after classic rock albums? I’m not the first one to have this idea. There were horses at Beulah Park when I was young named Physical Graffiti and Stardust Ziggy (not sure why they flip-flopped the words). Plus, there was a champion Quarter Horse a few years back named Sgt. Pepper Feature. But there are many album titles that would not only be short enough, but would so ... The launch of the first artificial satellite by the Soviet Union in 1957 marked the beginning of the utilization of Space for science and Commercial activity. During the Cold War, Space was a prime area of competition between the USSR and USA, reaching its climax with the Race to the Moon in the 1960s. In 1964, the first TV satellite was launched into a geostationary orbit in order to transmit the Olympic games from Tokyo. Later, Russian launch activities declined while other nations set up their own Space programs. Thus, the number of objects in Earth orbit has increased steadily -- by two hundred per year on average. Check out the site below and the hi-rez photos to see what really is currently orbiting our planet. ">The Number Of Objects Orbiting Earth [Sure is crowded up there.] ... Bill Clinton did more than any other human being, of any Race, to bring prosperity to Harlem. Does that undisputed fact of history obligate black people to support his wife? No. But it does, I think obligate the people of Harlem to show him some respect. Calling him a plantation owner, as did NY State Senator Bill Perkins in February of 2008, is disgusting and indefensible. We must never forgive or forget. From Time magazine , 1994: Along Harlem's main thoroughfare, 125th Street, business is booming, a function of indigenous forces mostly but of Clinton's policies as well. The vacancy rate for Commercial property is less than 2%, and Space is renting for more than $30 per sq. ft., about the same as in midtown Manhattan, an astounding surge. New stores will soon dot the cross streets, and nearby housing units are being rehabilitated. The private investment responsible for most of this growth is following rising incomes and the return of better-off families. "EZs," as they are known, are the latest incarnation of an old idea formerly called enterprise zones. What Clinton's added to the notion beyond tax incentives for businesses is a panoply of social services (day care and job training being the most prominent) designed to produce a work force capable of staffing the enterprises likely to be attracted by the tax breaks. After the Harlem-South Bronx EZ is formally approved later this year, the Federal Government will pour $100 million int ... Source: holycoast.blogspot.com --- 60 days ago
I spent my Sunday watching 1,100 miles of racing. It's one of those days that makes the TiVO well worthwhile - I didn't watch a single Commercial. The Cup Race at Charlotte went about as expected, with surprise twists and turns along the way and another win by Kasey Kahne. Tempers stayed relatively in check and not a single driver cried. I can't say the same for the Indy 500. The 500 is the only open-wheel Race I watch all year, mainly because it's the only one that anyone shows up for. You could fire a cannon into the stands at most IndyCar races - several times - and not even scare anybody, let alone hurt them. But Indy always draws a big crowd and occasionally there's good racing. There aren't any women drivers running in NASCAR's highest level, but there were at least three that I know of in the 500. And it was two of those drivers that made the day entertaining. The first was Sarah Fisher, running a team that she owns and runs on a shoestring budget. Sarah appeared with Hillary Clinton for a campaign photo op a few days before the Indiana primary. During the Race Fisher had the misfortune to try and share the same point in Space with the Race leader, who was spinning across the track at that moment, and both were put out of the event. Tony Kanaan, the other driver, was interviewed following the crash and had a typical Race driver's attitude. He was disappointed, a little ticked, but had that "we'll get 'em next week" attitude. You've heard about Obamamania. Now rocket mania is sweeping voters, at least in New Mexico. Voters in Sierra County in the Land of Enchantment have approved a quarter-cent tax to help fund New Mexico's Spaceport America . The vote, following on the heels of an earlier approval by residents of neighboring Dona Ana county, means that Spaceport America is a go. We've been closely following the Race to build a new Commercial spaceport to meet the expected needs of Space tourism since 2006 . (See also this news on Spaceport America from last year.) The results from the tax election in Sierra County virtually guarantee that Spaceport America will be the first new Commercial spaceport to open its doors in the United States since the Race began for the Space tourists' dollars. That's bad news for Spaceport Sheboygan , the Wisconsin spaceport effort that is being heavily promoted by the Great Lakes Aerospace Science and Education Center , among others. Virgin Galactic will be Spaceport America's anchor tenant. It's already in use by the likes of Lockheed Martin , who love Spaceport America's convenience: Spaceport America has launched two unmanned Commercial rockets and touts plans for Space tourism, but some secret rocket research also is being done. Lockheed Martin Corporation is now using the spaceport to advance some of its less-publicized technology. This prototype of Lockheed Martin's new spacecraft is only ... If you could improve the environment and strenthen the financial stability of lower income families with the same investment, charitable or otherwise, is there really any limit to what you would be willing to do? Most donors and foundations I talk to say no, subject to seeing what works, there is, in fact, no limit. Green collar jobs are defined as "blue-collar work force opportunities created by firms and organizations whose mission is to improve environmental quality," according to the Urban Habitat's Race, Poverty and the Environment .program. The policies involved include those related to zero waste, energy and water conservation, residential solar energy, whole home performance, local procurement, open Space, and strengthening local food systems. Urban Habitat's research shows that the characteristics of green collar jobs are being found in at least 22 sectors. The full list is really interesting, here are a few examples to give a flavor: Bicycle repair and bike delivery services Energy retrofits to increase energy efficiency and conservation Green waste composting on a large scale Hauling and reuse of construction materials and debris (C&D) Manufacturing jobs related to large scale production of appropriate technologies (i.e. solar panels, bike cargo systems, green waste bins, etc.) Non-toxic household cleaning in residential and Commercial buildings Public transit jobs related to driving, maintenanc ... #1 The Memphis City Council last week resurrected a motion to allow new Memphis Police officers to reside within 20 miles of Shelby County, and not have to live within the Shelby County limits as the rule stands now. The motion died in committee. It was a 3-3 tie with the black members opposing it, and the whites supporting it. The entire council can bring it up next week. According to the Commercial Appeal article, Councilman Joe Brown said he didn't think people in communities surrounding Memphis would be smart enough to do the job. He also questioned their views on Race. I was going to offer commentary on The Honorable Joe Brown’s statement, but on second thought it’s too hard to type while laughing. Again, I had to pass through American University's walled-garden-connectivity-hell hoops to get online, so I haven't been able to record the key points, which is a darn shame, because this is a good talk! Larry Irving is doing a great job challenging some of what we've heard about funding and business model, reminding us, James Wilson did, that we need a media Space independent from Commercial pressures, driven by discursive necessities and democratic logic. This is especially true, because the advertising market values people differently depending on Race and gender and class, and reliance on advertising dollars is a dependence on masters who don't value everyone equally. Why does this even have to be said? Even further, he's talked about how even foundations can pull the funding if they don't like the message. Now he's talking about the wireless revolution and the need to open white spaces. I'm remembering now that I say him talk at the Rainbow PUSH Media & Telecommunications Symposium , moderating a panel of telecom execs and one guy from Pew Internet and American life. I remember the panel being highlighted by a bunch of softball questions and plenty of time for the execs to talk about everything they were doing to deepen broadband penetration. Now, this guy is on fire. You can find his agenda here . More on white spaces and the NAB: Larry is advising that people who care about white spaces should throw in with Google on the policy ...
