Men seated at the legendary teak bar smoke, drink and call out affable greetings to new arrivals. A few people walk through to the tennis court and pool area out back, but most head for the restaurant, where waiters in white shirts and black trousers weave in and out of the aisles. “Come! Your place is here,” a beaming Dr. Tahseen Sheikhly commands a group of six, waving them over to his large corner table. “Sit down; what will you have?” The crowds have been returning to Al-Wiyah, a venerable social club that for years was a metaphor for the good life in Baghdad. Founded by the British in 1924, it became a popular retreat for the city’s gentry. The Colonial grandeur is mostly gone now, the décor more workaday than elegant; the carpet a bit worn; tablecloths faded. The building’s exterior is still pocked from insurgents’ gunfire, most of it aimed at neighboring high-value targets like the Palestine hotel, once a base for U.S. Marines. The violence that engulfed the capital city forced the club to close for more than a year, in 2003-’04. As recently as the mid-1970s, men had to wear a coat and tie in the club and during Saddam Hussein’s regime, membership was limited mostly to business leaders, senior Baath Party officials and ranking military officers. ... By now you may have seen the rumor from Official Xbox Magazine (described on Joystiq here) that Gearbox Software (developer of "Brothers in Arms," the upcoming "Aliens: Colonial Marines"" is making the next big "Halo" game and doing it for Microsoft's follow-up to the Xbox 360. I checked with a source I have who is close to Gearbox and the best info I can confirm is that Gearbox has definitely had conversations with Microsoft about doing a new "Halo" game and is very excited at the prospect. However, last my source heard, there was no deal in place. The Pentagon announced on Aug. 5 that over 1,200 U.S. Marines stationed in Afghanistan would be ordered to stay an extra 26 days in the country. The battalion was part of a 3,500-strong contingent sent earlier in the year to train Afghan police and security to assist the U.S./NATO Colonial occupation under the guise of "fighting terrorism." The U.S. Defense Department will send an additional 200 troops to Afghanistan. U.S. commanders have also requested that 10,000 more troops be deployed. These decisions to strengthen the occupation force numbers are a response to growing resistance in Afghanistan. In June, 28 U.S. soldiers were killed in Afghanistan making it the deadliest month for U.S. forces since they invaded the country in 2001. As indistinctly evidenced by some new (and brief) off-screen footage, the so-not-coming-out-in-2008 shocker is shaping up to be everything you could have hoped for: It is a game. It is presented in the first-person perspective. You are equipped with a device that rapidly transports projectiles into snarling faces, often attached to slimy extraterrestrials. The footage was captured by the folks behind The Jace Hall Show , who came over, man, came over to have a look at the game in the final moments of their season finale. Earlier we posted that Gearbox Software ( Brothers In Arms , Borderlands ) was rumored to be working on Halo 4 . With Bungie out of the picture, Gearbox does seem like a logical fit — the developer did do the PC version of Halo: Combat Evolved . What's more, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford stated in February: "I've started a new project. It's big. It's, like, look-at-our-line-up-and-imagine-something-even-bigger kind of big. I'm Directing it myself. I can't mention it publicly yet. When you find out what this is, you'll likely agree that I can't oversell this one." But that doesn't necessarily mean Gearbox is doing Halo 4 . The "big" project Pitchford is talking about could be something else entirely. And Halo 4 hasn't even been announced. (Though, Microsoft would be silly not to do it.) So, why all this talk about Gearbox and Halo 4 ? The current Director of Technology at Gearbox is Corrinne Yu. Corrinne Yu (pictured) has been called, for lack of a better comparison, "the John Carmack of female programmers". She's an industry vet, cutting her teeth as the Lead Programmer for the 3DO's Asia launch, going on to work as Lead Programmer for the Prey Engine and even working as Director of Technology at John Romero's ill-fated ION Storm and also at 3D Realms. Eso es al menos lo que se comenta estos días, tras los comentarios aparecidos en el último número de la Revista Oficial de Xbox en Estados Unidos. Según el magazine , Halo 4 sería título de lanzamiento de la sucesora de la actual Xbox 360 que, como ya os informamos, se rumorea que pueda salir durante el próximo año 2012. Además la revista asegura que tras la desvinculación de Microsoft por parte de Bungie, serán los chicos de Gearbox (Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, Aliens: Colonial Marines) los encargados del proyecto.
