Dell is trying to sell its computer factories around the world. It's the final nail in the coffin of the build-your-own-PC business model that was favored by business and corporate customers. These days, sales growth is at the consumer level, and people are buying laptops, not desktops. And they like to buy them in person, at places like Best Buy and Wal-Mart . So Dell shelved its custom-made business and is working on getting preassembled machines into retail channels. Now, it wants to sell its factories and outsource production -- a move that will cut operating costs significantly. Dell's operating margin was 5% last quarter, while rival Hewlett-Packard 's margin is 5.7%, a Cowen analyst told the Wall Street Journal. Dell estimates the value of its property, factory plants and equipment at $2.6 billion. Dell shares are up less than 1% Friday to $20.48. Update: Dell has already been outsourcing its components and motherboard work, writes Collins Stewart analyst Brian White in a note. It does the final system assembly in-house. White guesses that Taiwanese companies such as Hon Hai Precision may win the new outsourcing contracts, while Flextronics is a strong candidate to get Dell's notebook computer business. The defending national champs took the court for the first time – with a completely different look. Kansas coach Bill Self didn’t have Brandon Rush, Darrell Arthur, Mario Chalmers, Darnell Jackson, Sasha Kaun or Rodrick Stewart when the Jayhawks played McGill University on the first game of their Labor Day tour Saturday morning. Sherron Collins didn’t play as well (knee), so it was no shock that sophomore Cole Aldrich scored 18 points and 10 boards in a 72-67 win. Freshman Tyshawn Taylor, a late addition by the Jayhawks, finished with 18 points as well. Fellow frosh Travis Releford and sophomore guard Tyrel Reed each had had 10. Junior college forward Mario Little finished with nine points and six boards. Other players who got extensive playing time are sophomore guard Brady Morningstar and junior college guard Tyrone Appleton. Self wasn't able to play freshman twins Marcus and Markieff Morris as both didn't make the trip and wait for the NCAA decision's on their eligibility. No Comments ...

Say hello to Jason Reich , editor of the comedy news site 23/6. Before joining 23/6, he spent six years as a writer with The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. What word do you routinely misspell? Recommendation. I always want to put two C's in it. So anyone who asks me for one is going to be severely disappointed. What's the name of your cell phone ring? It's called "24" because it's an audio sample from the TV show of the telephone ring at CTU headquarters. You know ... bip-bip-BEEE-boop. What time did you get up this morning? 7:00 am. I hit snooze. Then I got up again at 7:09. Then 7:18, 7:27, 7:36 and 7:45. When did you last cry, and why? A few minutes ago, after reading this list of questions. How many e-mails a do you receive a day, roughly? Maybe 100? I would say 20-30 of them are pitches and the rest of them are the staff writing dirty jokes back and forth to each other. What's your favorite letter? Everyone knows K is the funniest letter. The FTSE 100 was up 22.2 points at 5623.4 and the FTSE 250 was up 90.6 points at 9362.3 at 11.50am today. Bradford & Bingley was down 1.75p at 48.5p after posting interim results, which Collins Stewart said were “were little short of appalling”. “Looking forwards, guidance is for margins to continue falling and [for] arrears [to] continue rising. Earnings outlook is therefore very weak. The margin issue is both the lack of ability to write new business currently available at higher margins, at least in part due to funding constraints, in our view,” the broker added. ...

Eric Savitz (Barron's) submits: Shares of glass maker Corning (GLW) and LCD panel producers AU Optronics (AUO) and LG Display (LPL) are all down sharply today amid a new wave of market jitters on the prospects for the flat-panel display market. Several recent Street research reports note that conditions in the LCD panel sector have been difficult for much of the third quarter, raising questions about the companies’ ability to hit current Street estimates. Brian White, an analyst with Collins Stewart , noted in a round-up piece on the electronics supply chain today that he visited last week with three leading Taiwan-based LCD panel makers, and came away with a “reinforced” cautious stance on AU Optronics, which he rates Hold. He said the trip also provided “incremental concerns regarding our near-term financial estimates” on Corning. “Based on our visits, we believe LCD panel pricing at the Taiwan players has been worse than expected thus far in the September quarter with PC monitors experiencing the most pricing pressure,” he writes. White does say that the rate of price declines began to slow during the second-half of August, and that the worse may be over for the near-term. Complete Story » ...

by Rick Landers. Modern Guitars caught up with photographer Randy Jennings a while back to check out his inventory of rock and other live-music photography. His body of work includes photos of major rock guitarists that have grippped our imaginations over the years. His Captured Live Photography website gallery attests to his ability to click at the right moment to get the shot. Jennings' work can be found in Rolling Stone , Hal Leonard Corporation publications, Guitar Player , Hot Licks Productions, VH-1 Music Television, Goldmine , Genesis , Alligator Records, and Taylor Publishing. His photos have been featured on several TV stations' music features, high fashion clips, sport news and other hot spot assignments where dynamic photos are essential to tell the story. Randy's artistry can be found in books like Keri Leigh's Stevie Ray - Soul to Soul , and Craig Hopkins', outstanding biography, The Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan . He's also a Strat player and given his SRV inventory of shots, we expect he's a fan of the Texas guitar slinger. His photo "fix" offered him opportunities to get close to a slug of hot guitarists and other musicians including: Albert Collins, Eric Clapton, The Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, the Who, Warren Zevon, Gregg Allman, Lonnie Mack, Rod Stewart, Albert King and other icons of music... ...

By the end of the day tomorrow the Titans will have to trim the roster to 53 players.  Here is the way I see it: Locks (41) QB- Vince Young, Kerry Collins RB- LenDale White, Chris Johnson, Ahmard Hall WR- Justin Gage, Justin McCareins, Lavelle Hawkins TE- Alge Crumpler, Bo Scaife, Craig Stevens OL- Michael Roos, Jake Scott, Kevin Mawae, Eugene Amano, David Stewart, Daniel Loper, Leroy Harris DL- Kyle Vanden Bosch, Albert Haynesworth, Tony Brown, Jevon Kearse, Jacob Ford, Mookie Johnson, Jason Jones, Williams Hayes LB- Keith Bulluck, David Thornton, Ryan Fowler, Stephen Tulloch DB- Cortland Finnegan, Nick Harper, Michael Griffin, Chris Hope, Vincent Fuller, Chris Carr, Eric King, Calvin Lowry P- Craig Hentrich K- Rob Bironas LS- Ken Amato Probable (10) RB- Chris Henry, Casey Cramer WR- Brandon Jones TE- Dwayne Blakely OL- Mike Otto DL- Dave Ball LB- Stanford Keglar, Colin Allred DB- Donnie Nickey, Reynaldo Hill (as much as I hate it, Fisher loves guys with experience) That leaves us with 2 spots.  One of those spots might go to John Vaughn temporarily if the the Titans are satisfied with where Bironas is coming off the injury.  Let's assume they have to temporarily keep Vaughn, that leaves one spot for Roydell Williams, Biren Ealy, Quinton Ganther, Sean Conover or Tuff Harris. It doesn't really look like there are too many tough decisions to be made.  Some people have called this one of the deepest teams that the Titans have had, b ...
