The $340,000 work of art that comprised nine holly bushes in front of the former Charlotte Coliseum has been taken down. Developers said they were unable to find a new home for the environmental landscape by famed artist Maya Lin. Mason Zimmerman, senior vice president of Pope & Land Enterprises, said the company spent more than two years contacting artists, arboretums and others who might want the bushes but no one was willing or able to take the artwork. The firm, which is building a mixed-use project called City Park on the Coliseum site, is incorporating the oak trees that were also part of the “Topo” artwork into their design. Although it will likely dip in the ratings like the Dow Jones compared to the first one, the second presidential debate Tuesday was more interesting visually than the other one. With a town hall format, the candidates were freed from the podiums where they stood and free to walk the small arena between a circle of 80 supposed unaffiliated voters who had prepared some questions only a few of them got to ask. Still, we got to take a look at these voters instead of just the two candidates and we will say this: There were an awful lot of bald guys in the audience, it seemed. Also, a lot with facial hair. Mustaches. Van Dykes. This could have been the Nashville effect. In addition to these faces, we got to see a lot of wires, fraying rugs, water bottles, speakers, and the traffic lights of timing signals -- the detritus of makeshift TV production. Tom Brokaw moderated, reading from among the 80 questions from those on hand and thousands of questions sent in online, and often shaping them into his own inquiries. He lost control from the start, as the two went beyond their one and two minute restraints to answer questions and soon enough, eachother's charges. Obama seemed strong in the format; McCain faltered a couple of times even as he kept more consistently on the attack.
