Coastal Carolina University is changing some school policies after 29 students at the Conway school have been charged in the past month with off-campus alcohol violations. The university also will push for closer monitoring of local stores that sell alcohol to underage buyers. CONWAY WE’VE VENTURED beyond the pale. We can proclaim that the Coastal Carolina University football program is at — and possibly over — the line of being out of control. We gained a whiff last season with Jerome Simpson’s arrest, which was an appetizer for the main course: the arrests of former players Mario Tynes, Eric Brown and Ricky Johnson in October on gun and drug charges. We thought that might have been the end of it, that last season’s rebuilding year had winnowed the bad apples at the same time it returned the team to a measure of on-field promise. But, no. ... A Coastal Carolina University sprinter was arrested after police found him with marijuana. Authorities say 21-year-old Javarius Lavontae Phelps of Greenwood was charged with marijuana possession and intent to distribute. The Web site for the J. Rueben Long Detention Center says he remains in custody there. The Horry County Police Department says officers stopped a car that was driving left of the center line. They found 3 ounces of what they believed to be marijuana, and seized $355. Phelps, a junior, was part of the Chanticleers 400-meter and 1,600-meter relay teams, each of which set school records at the Big South Conference meet. A college spokeswoman said in a release that Phelps was temporarily dismissed Wednesday from the men's track team. A final decision depends on the outcome of the case. ... Coastal Carolina University has suspended a fraternity and a sorority after both organizations held unauthorized events at private residences where alcohol was served. Pi Kappa Phi fraternity was suspended Wednesday and Gamma Phi Beta was suspended on Sept. 3 after school officials overheard students discussing the events and began in-depth investigations. The suspensions are not related to the arrests of six student athletes in the past month, but the most recent suspension comes on the heels of an announcement from President David DeCenzo Tuesday, that the university will crack down on underage drinking. "Any time a Greek organization holds an event, they are required to register that event with the university. If there is an event where alcohol will be served, that event has special registration procedures that have to be filed as well," said Haven Hart, assistant vice president of student affairs at CCU. "The business or venue where they are holding the event has to have liability insurance, has to have the correct zoning for alcohol sales, and they have to have training preparation for the servers to be able to tell if someone has had too much. There's a lot that goes into certifying those events." ... Source: www.blackshoediaries.com --- 39 days ago
We were all pleased with the results on Saturday I'm sure, but there were definitely some things to work on. Let's take a look at the defense and see how each unit did. Defensive Line You would be hard pressed to ask for a better game from the defensive line. The Chanticleers were held to just 52 yards on 32 attempts for a puny 1.6 yards per carry. The defensive tackles were stuffing the middle and the ends were getting good pressure off the edge. Aaron Maybin was a beast coming around the left tackle all day like the kid was standing in a foot of mud. He recorded 2 sacks and five tackles. Not bad for a guy that wasn't even listed on the depth chart earlier in the week. Jared Odrick was credited with a sack, though I could have sworn he had two by my count. Redshirt freshman Eric Latimore also got a sack on the day. The only knock I have on them is they were a little too aggressive at times. The Chants were letting them go on the jailbreak screen and we were still falling for it late in the game. The quarterback sucked them in and dunked the ball over their heads for a 15 yard gain. They have to learn to read that and adjust. That guy in front of you isn't putting up a fight for a reason. Final Grade: B+ Linebackers I didn't come away from this game feeling any better about our linebacker situation. Coastal Carolina was killing us on screens and dump passes throughout the first half. But I don't blame the linebackers for this entir ...
