International Coal Group shareholders have re-elected billionaire investor Wilbur Ross and Chief Executive Ben Hatfield to the mine operator's board. ICG says shareholders also re-elected Wendy Teramoto at Wednesday's meeting in New York. All will serve three more years as directors. Ross' investment company, W.L. Ross & Co., owns approximately 24.5 million shares, or slightly more than 16 percent, of ICG and is the company's largest shareholder. Based in Scott Depot, ICG has 12 mining complexes and controls approximately 960 million tons of Coal reserves in Illinois, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland and Virginia. Kent Exploration Inc. isn't the only company staked into the early-stage Coal play in Saskatchewan that is making waves with investors on Wednesday.  North American Gem Inc. shares jumped more than 45% through early afternoon trading after it announced that it signed an agreement with Adamas Minerals Corp. of Prince Alberta, Saskatchewan. The deal grants North American Gem Inc. exclusive rights to Coal, oil shale's and or all hydrocarbon discoveries on a land package on which Coal permit applications have been submitted for west of Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan. Included in the land package, North American Gem submitted Coal permit applications for 578,234 acres, bringing its current total land staking to approximately 927,613 acres. To look at Sunday's Eagle Opinion pages as well as other recent news and commentaries, one would think that all the Kansas Legislature did all session was talk about Coal. Although there was discussion about Coal, this was one of the most successful sessions the south-central Kansas delegation has ever had. We were able to preserve past funding initiatives, particularly in the aviation research area, as well as new funding. In addition to these successes, we also had a conversation about Kansas' energy future, and that's a good thing. Convincing the entire legislative body of the importance of aviation for our state, the need to fund the training of family practice doctors, and the importance of preserving and sustaining a regional water supply is no easy task. In the end, investing in these programs boosts our economy and improves quality of life, not just for south-central Kansas but for all of Kansas. Many thanks to leadership in both chambers for expediting the legislation to allow the state of Kansas the opportunity to compete with other states to ensure Cessna Aircraft's new production facility for the Columbus business jet is built in Wichita. Another initiative that was new was helping the legislative body understand the need for sustaining and preserving a valuable water supply for our region.
