Bill Self got himself a fat raise this year . So did Trent Johnson , John Beilein, Travis Ford and Jeff Capel , all first-timers into the millionaire coaches club. Billy Donovan ( even he hasn’t officially signed the dotted line yet), Bruce Pearl and Tony Bennett snagged huge pay bumps last season. Though not quite in the same league as their football counterparts, college hoops coaches have been handsomely paid for some time, usually because of NCAA tournament success . (Average salary for a college football Coach is about $1 million, according to USA Today . Average hoops Coach makes $800,000.) The top-paid coaches are who you’d expect. Donovan, Self, Thad Matta, John Calipari and Billy Gillispie are the top five, according to the list on this story . Pearl, Tom Crean, Rick Pitino and Rick Barnes round out the coaches making at least $2 million annually, with Ben Howland, Roy Williams, Tubby Smith and Tom Izzo right behind. Yup, that’s a lotta dimp . It made me wonder: Which coaches due for a big payday? John Thompson III would seem like a good bet (back-to-back Big East titles and a Final Four the last two season) with another solid season at Georgetown. But he signed an extension last September that pays him about $900,000 a season through 2013, which makes him a longshot to get another pay bump without winning an NCAA title. Plus, would he really push Georgetown officials for more dough? Gonzaga’s Mark Few reportedly makes about ...

Dwight Jaynes doesn't understand why NBA coaches have to wear stuffy suits on the sidelines. A hoops writer who earned his chops in the heyday of the funkiest Coach out there makes an impassioned plea for cut-offs, sweater vests and what have you. Jaynes points out that baseball and football coaches perform perfectly well without suits. Here's some of his argument: Am I the only one who thinks it's a little nuts to see these guys in hot arenas, surrounded by sweaty guys in basketball uniforms having to suffer through a game while wearing expensive and not-really-appropriate-for-sweaty-work clothes? They don't wear these things to practice and most of them don't even wear them to the arena on game nights -- they change just prior to the game like actors slipping into costume. "I picture Rick Pitino wearing a slick suit and expensive tie in the middle of the night on a trip to the Quicky Mart for a six pack." (J. Meric/Getty Images) Yeah, I know it looks "nice" to have them dressed up. But come on, these days lawyers, teachers, doctors -- all sorts of professionals who used to wear the jacket and tie -- have put them in the closet for good. On even a good day, a tie is a nuisance. I mean, whoever came up with the concept that wrapping something around your neck and cinching it up tight is the standard we must all meet while working? It certainly doesn't feel good, at least until you get used to it. And to have to be wearing it thro ...

Iona Coach Kevin Willard can finally look down the bench and have some options. With two transfers, six freshmen and a pair of walk-on freshman, Willard was able to utilize the up-tempo style that he’s watched while learning from Rick Pitino in the NBA and at Louisville over the last few years. ``Last year we had no choice but to slow it down,” said the second-year head Coach. “It’s not a fun way to play, but we had no choice. You can’t go up and down with six guys.” Willard has added 7-footer Jonathan Huffman, who followed Willard from Louisville, and former Seton Hall guard Kashif Pratt. He’s also brought in an influx of freshman who will make an immediate impact. ``We’re going to go with a four-guard lineup at times,” Willard said. “And we’re going to get up and down and press a lot. We’ve got a lot of speed and we’re going to have to use it.” Huffman shot the ball extremely well this past weekend on the team’s trip to Canada. He was 9-of-10 from long distance and his length and ability to stretch the defense gives Willard an opportunity to spread the floor when he’s on the court. The point guard spot will likely be shared by a pair of New Jersey freshmen who should complement one another well – scorer Jermel Jenkins and floor leader Scott Machado. Willard was excited about the offseason improvement of sophomore wing Rashon Dwight. ``He was the biggest surprise of anyone on the trip,” Willard said. “He really worked this summer ...

LOUISVILLE — Louisville Coach Rick Pitino says the team's 2008-09 schedule may be the team's most difficult since he began coaching the Cardinals. The Cardinals will play 12 teams that made the NCAA tournament a year ago, though they'll get most of those games within the friendly confines of Freedom Hall. • 2008-09 Louisville Cardinals basketball schedule (PDF) • Roster ...

1. Hunter Cantwell likes to hunt frogs. He has Kansas ties, often fishing in Pleasanton during the summer. And he's also a highly-regarded NFL pro prospect. His season statistics have been so-so -- 355 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions -- but he's 4-2 as a starter, as K-State knows all about him from that perspective. Starting in place of injured Brian Brohm, he led the Cardinals to a 24-6 victory in 2006, throwing for 173 yards and a score. 2. Papa John's rocks -- the stadium (the pizza is up to personal tastes). Since 1998, Louisville has run up a 50-12 record at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, which holds 42,000. A 20-game winning streak there was snapped last year. In all, Coach Steve Kragthorpe lost three times at Papa John's during his first season. 3. WR Josh Chichester, at 6-8, is one of the tallest football players in the country. Chichester, who redshirted last season, played basketball for Rick Pitino in 2007, averaging 0.7 points and 0.3 rebounds in six games. He quit basketball before spring practice, and it seems to have paid off -- he's Louisville's second-leading receiver with six receptions for 70 yards. "He's a beast," K-State junior safety Courtney Herndon said. Key matchup Ron English against Dave Brock. Prince essentially said players play and coaches Coach, but how about English, Louisville's new defensive coordinator, against Brock, K-State's new offensive coordinator? It's going to be a fascinatin ...

Have you ever found yourself inheriting the same mannerisms of someone or someones close to you that you initially ridiculed? I think it's happening to Steve Kragthorpe. When the Cardinal head Coach was asked yesterday about Connecticut quarterback Tyler Lorenzen - the same Tyler Lorenzen currently under heavy scrutiny in Storrs for his propensity to throw the ball to the other team - Kragthorpe served up a comparison that would have made Rick Pitino blush: reigning Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow. "He's the Big East's Tim Tebow right now," Kragthorpe said. "I really feel that way. He's a big, strong, physical runner. I saw him at Big East media day, and he looked like a daggum linebacker. (UConn) does a lot of things like Florida does to put the ball in his hands and run things with him that you normally don't see, like quarterback power, quarterback wrap, quarterback counter. There's definitely a designed quarterback run package they use with Tyler, and they should because he's a very good runner." Kragthorpe concluded by saying he felt Morehead State would be the most difficult season-opener in the history of Louisville basketball. ...

The world's highest paid blogger is back at, and hits us with an update on the condition of the team. Here are some highlights: Seniors T-Will- Always in great shape. Showing great leadership. He should have a special senior season. Andre McGee- He has worked on his body and is now down to 6% body fat. Lighting quick and also showing a special desire to lead. Juniors Jerry Smith- Ready and poised for a strong season. Needs to drop 6-8 pounds. That will be easy after our first week of practice. Starting to show signs of leadership qualities. Edgar Sosa- The sophomore jinx is over. Poised for a special season. He has matured into a team first player. Like everything I see. Sophomores Preston Knowles-No jinx with this young man. Tough and hard working. Fun to Coach Freshman Samardo Samuels- Love him. Enough said! Jared Swopshire-   Skilled offensive player. Must get stronger and put on about 15 pounds. Hard worker with a tremendous attitude to learn. Terrence Jennings- Terrific athlete. Must learn to relax and slow down offensively. We will spend a lot of time on his footwork and low post game. Has the potential to develop into an outstanding player but it will take time. Samardo Samuels being able to elicit an exclamation point from Rick Pitino elicits extremely awkward happy dancing from me. ...

At least three times a week. Always orange. It's still a bit too early to completely hone in on the Kansas Game, but the sad fact of the matter is that with no news (outside of C.J. Peake's exodus) coming out of the Trager Center, and with the contest freshest in our minds being a throttling of an FCS school that did little to further illuminate this team's strengths and weaknesses, there really isn't a whole hell of a lot to talk about. And yet, we press on.  Rick Pitino is in the process of sending class of 2010 recruit Tobias Harris a very strong message by paying the young man a personal visit at his home in Long Island. "Coach Rick Pitino showed that his recruiting efforts were not all talk by visiting Lutheran High School to watch Tobias for a two hour workout after school today," Torrel Harris, Sr. told the NBE Basketball Report. "Tobias told me he was very happy to see Coach Pitino's interest in him and felt that it really meant something that he choose to be there rather than sending an assistant Coach," Mr. Harris said. Harris was among those who visited U of L over Labor Day weekend. The 6-foot-7, 220 lbs. forward is currently rated as the 33rd best player in the class of '10 by Rivals.com.  Tickets are now available for the Louisville/Western Kentucky basketball game, which will be played on Nov. 30 in Nashville. Lower level seats are 35 bones, while sitting in the upper level will set you back just $20.   This guy is ...

As part of the publicity tour for his new book, Rick Pitino recently sat down for some one-on-one time with The Courier-Journal 's Angie Fenton. I think I speak for all of the men this morning when I say congratulations, you lucky, lucky son of a bitch. During the Q &A Pitino gave his thoughts on music, technology and the upcoming U of L basketball season. You've recently learned how to text message. How has that changed things for you? I used to live on the phone. Now I live text messaging people. My son … wants me to get the Blackberry and use both thumbs, but I do it the old-fashioned way. … I've gone from being semi-computer literate to now being on it all the time. Do you text your kids? All the time, all day long. And it's great with the players. What's on your iPod? It changes, but I love the Eagles, I have Billy Joel … Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, every person that's ever played in Motown. What prompted you to begin watching BET, Black Entertainment Television, when you exercise? I was … with the women volleyball and basketball players on the treadmills, on the ellipticals, and they would say, "Coach, you want me to change it?" and I would say, "No, it's great. I love this station," and I would watch it with them as I was getting my exercise. The man's just a wee bit cool. In a related story, Steve Kragthorpe recently took part in a similar interview as part of the whirlwind publicity tour for his new book, Throwing Three-Yard ...
